Anyone tried Marron glacé?

I was watching a Christmas food show which featured Marron glacé and I’m intrigued to try.

Anyone tried these? They’re quite expensive so I’m going to try find a place that sells them individually as I just want to try one (London based, I’m thinking fortnums may sell individually?)

I really really do not like marron glacé. I had it in a waffle once it was awful and I’d eat almost anything.

IfKipling · 06/11/2023 10:15

Oops I just realised I had marron on a waffle not the glacé version which I will not be trying 😂

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 06/11/2023 10:17

They are very very sweet.

SallyWD · 06/11/2023 10:20

I love them!

ShangPie · 06/11/2023 10:32

Have you had chestnuts before? They are basically big soft nuts, but the glacé part means they are caramelised and taste a bit toffee-ish. If you imagine a sweet hazelnut, but soft and kind of floury, that’s it.

You might eat 2-3, but it’s not an amazing snack IMHO

Marron puree on toasted brioche or pannetone… now that’s a different story 😘

Marron glacé are much too sweet for me - and I have a sweet tooth. Much prefer hot chestnuts hot from roasting - still with a little natural sweetness- delicious. 🌹

APurpleSquirrel · 06/11/2023 10:48

I love chestnuts - but I hate maroon glacé. I thought I'd love them, but they were too sweet & sickly & the texture was weird.
Maybe they're better included in tiny amounts into a dessert but yeah I definitely can't sit & eat them on their own.

Joppi · 06/11/2023 12:25

Interesting…sounds like it may be too sweet, even for me. Definitely something to try just one of, instead of getting a box.

@ShangPie need to investigate this Marron puree now!

@ShangPie

We just love that stuff. Used to bring tins of Clément Faugier crème de Marrons back from France and spread it on slices of brioche.

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/11/2023 15:03

They literally make my teeth sting - far too sweet.

AlwaysGinPlease · 06/11/2023 15:19

Husband loves them, I do not!

CurlewKate · 06/11/2023 16:12

They make amazing ice cream!

LubaLuca · 06/11/2023 16:17

I love chestnuts and I can eat them glacéed (?!) to be polite, but I'd rather not. They're sweet to the point of having no flavour at all, you just get a physical reaction to the sweetness.

Sparkletastic · 06/11/2023 16:28

Incredibly rich and sweet but oddly dry on the tongue.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/11/2023 16:31

They're fantastic. Very, very expensive. I once made my own and they were pretty good. You cannot get the large sweet chestnuts they use commercially though.

BonjourCrisette · 06/11/2023 16:35

I love marrons glacés. In fact, I love almost anything made of chestnuts. That purée is really nice on pancakes with some whipped cream.

^ this.

I've mostly had the cream of chestnuts on crêpes in France, a little goes a long way as it's very sweet. I also love chestnuts.

Mynewnameis · 06/11/2023 16:43

Overrated imo

StamppotAndGravy · 06/11/2023 16:49

I love them, but you have to buy the good ones that are €2-3 each. Otherwise they just taste of sugar. The expensive ones are both savoury and sweet at the same time and are a bit of an acquired taste

ATerrorofLeftovers · 06/11/2023 17:01

Mostly just taste incredibly sweet, the chestnut flavour is very subtle. They’re ok, but there are better things.

Joppi · 06/11/2023 17:08

Sounds like it divides opinion. Looks like Leonidas sells one for £3 (very expensive but better than buying a whole jar and not liking them).

I had one years ago on a Christmas French exchange.

It was awful. Super sweet but floury, doughy texture and zero flavour. I am not a fussy eater at all.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 06/11/2023 17:16

I’ve never tried them, but I’ve had ‘Venus’s Nipples’, which are delicious chestnut truffles.

Fifthtimelucky · 06/11/2023 17:31

I absolutely love them but they are very expensive so a couple of years ago I tried making my own.

I picked up a load of chestnuts a couple of days ago on a walk and plan to make some more soon.
