How many people do you buy Christmas presents for vs how many would you like to buy for?

I just buy for DH, DD(21) and cats and DD’s gerbil and hamster. DH buys a gift for his 46yr old DD (big age gap between me and DH)

I am happy to not be buying for lots of people who I have no clue about what they like and already have etc. I know many people feel obligated and others would like to buy for more people but for various reasons (usually money or distance) can’t. I’m just curious/nosey. 😆

My mum, dad, brother and DD.
I go halves on the gifts DD wants to buy her friends, dad, dad's gf and her half sister.
Box of chocolates for DDs rugby coach and any teachers she wants to say "thank you" to, -shes at secondary now so that's not many but she has ASD and there were a couple last year that really went above and beyond.

I WFH so no colleagues or secret Santas to buy for.

My parents and brother discussed only doing gifts for DD but I hate that idea, I enjoy giving almost as much as receiving.

Patchworksack · 01/11/2023 19:05

DH, our three kids, DH’s parents, his siblings and their partners and the 5 cousins. Another 5 cousins on my side - mercifully adults my side decided years ago not to bother. DDs teacher, Brownie leaders, work secret Santa….

How many would I like to buy for? My kids, that’s it - I enjoy choosing things for them. I didn’t have much extended family growing up so we got gifts ‘from Santa’ and not much else - I find the big heaps of gifts distasteful. Proper Scrooge!

ChristmasCrumpet · 01/11/2023 19:11

I love giving gifts. I'd give loads if I could, but DH goes spare. I'm a Christmas lover, he's a bah humbug (why do these two types always end up together??) so I do just us, our DC, mum and dad, and our remaining grandparent. 8 in total. A few token gifts for work colleagues and friends.

I do use the bargain threads religiously though, and I think all 8 including DH and DC stockings are in at £280 at the mo.

Teebles007 · 01/11/2023 19:15

DH, 3 adult DC's and partners, 2 DGC and my dad. Interested in how much other GP's spend on adult children and baby DGC's. I guess I would like to spend less on adult kids possibly buying them joint gift and put money into DGC saving accounts. Is this unreasonable.

My parents
Mil&Fil
Husband & 2Dc
15 nieces and nephews
Little girl I mind
2 kris kindles
Friend
My godmother
I also have 4 birthdays in Oct, 2 in Nov and 4 in December. I like to start shopping early!

Some of my nieces and nephews or 21 and older it's hard to know when too stop, you don't want to be known as the mean aunty.

Meeting · 01/11/2023 19:16

Oh god if I added it up with mine and DH's parents, grandparents, siblings, nieces/nephews, friends, cousins and the odd long time colleague/employee I'd definitely be in double digits.

Tisfortired · 01/11/2023 19:17

I buy for DP, DC, my nieces, my friends children (2 of them.)

I am in 2 secret Santa groups, one with my friends and one with my mum and sisters, budget is £30 for each. Oh and the dog!

I am happy with this, I buy for all the children in my life and the people I love most, none of this ‘a bottle of X for X distant relative because I have to’ and an ‘M&S set for this distant aunt I see once a year.’

Thisepisodeof · 01/11/2023 19:26

I am buying for 19, I actually enjoy buying for 4 (2DC and DM/DF) Not a reflection of how much I love/like the others but they are much harder to buy for and it can feel a little pointless. I tend to do consumables.

I buy for my partner, brother, mum and dad.

Plus 3 friends.

Mrsfussypants1 · 01/11/2023 19:41

Oh and Dhs friend. His parents and sister are no longer alive and hes single, so I always make sure we buy him a gift as it'll be the only gift he receives.

ohtowinthelottery · 01/11/2023 19:42

DH, DS, DMIL, 3x gift vouchers for nieces/nephew, joint gift for DB & SIL, 2 friends and 1 DD of a different friend. We stopped buying for DHs wider family last year (that was another 8 presents) .

WallaceinAnderland · 01/11/2023 19:44

Lovemusic82 · 01/11/2023 20:09

2 friends
2 teen dc
mum and her partner
dad
grandmother
1 niece
1 nephew
4 small children (my DC’s nieces and nephews)

This year money is tight so it will mostly be a selection box and £5/£10 for children and food/wine for the adults. I will probably spend around £200 on each dc. So around £500 on gifts altogether.

CousinGoldfinch · 01/11/2023 20:23

My mum.
2 friends.
Therapist.
Secret Santa Gift for someone in poverty in the UK
Selection boxes for young people in local supported housing project.

I'm happy with those I buy for.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 01/11/2023 20:24

I buy for my DH, DS (15), DD1 (11), DD2 (5), my parents and 6 nieces. My DH also buys for his parents, two brothers and their partners and his nephew, but I leave him to it and don't get involved unless he's really stuck for ideas.

I would like to buy for my 3 DC and myself!

Desecratedcoconut · 01/11/2023 20:26

So, between our family and amalgamating all the family presents from our home looks like;
3 kids, dh, 3x parents, 4 siblings, 4 partners 7xnieces/nephews, 2 x family friends. We also have four Xmas birthdays in addition.

How many would I like it to be? However many that is^^

ThePoshUns · 01/11/2023 20:32

We decided in my quite small family to stop buying for adults as we all have everything we need - by that I mean parents / siblings. I still buy for my adult sons. Only buy for nieces / nephews under age 18

ThePoshUns · 01/11/2023 20:35

Everyone is happy with this arrangement

BettyfromBristol · 01/11/2023 20:39

5 and 5

MissyB1 · 01/11/2023 20:48

Dh, and our 3 ds plus girlfriend of ds 1
adult niece and nephew
Family hamper for my dsis and her Dh
4 God children
secret Santa at work
Dh’s two secretaries at his work

OMG that’s 15 people 😱

I would prefer to not have to buy for the adult niece and nephew, or the 4 God children. That would be 6 less presents.

elQuintoConyo · 01/11/2023 20:53

Husband, child, a niece and a nephew, my parents (something small - book, scarf).

Husband buys for a niece, two godsons and his dad.

I do make little things for friends I'm I a handicraft group with. We all know the time and effort and skill that goes into making something, so it's lovely to give and receive these gifts.

I used to buy for lots of people, make lots of things, but costs just went mad, so I scaled right back. Close friends & family abroad get homemade xmas cards.

It's all very stress free.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 01/11/2023 21:11

13 family and friends and 4 Dunelm gift tags.

shivawn · 01/11/2023 21:32

My mum and dad, my MIL, my husband's 19 nieces & nephews, my son, BIL and his wife, SIL, Secret Santa at work. My husband and I don't really buy for each other, we have joint finances and tend to be the kind of people who just buy what we want when we want it so aren't bothered about buying presents for each other just for the sake of it.

Sooooo 26 people.

I'd love to do a Secret Santa for all my husband's nieces and nephews but everyone else seems happy to continue individual presents. It's not the cost that bothers me, it's just a lot of pressure. They range in age from 2-33 years old and some of them are so hard to buy for.

Dacadactyl · 01/11/2023 21:37

My parents
My in laws
Our 2 kids
My friend and her son
My aunt (unless she specifically tells me to 'save my money')
6 nephews and nieces
Then we get DHs aunts and uncles something too, so that's an extra 4 people too.
I want to buy for all of them tbh, so that's 19 people.
