I just buy for DH, DD(21) and cats and DD’s gerbil and hamster. DH buys a gift for his 46yr old DD (big age gap between me and DH)

I am happy to not be buying for lots of people who I have no clue about what they like and already have etc. I know many people feel obligated and others would like to buy for more people but for various reasons (usually money or distance) can’t. I’m just curious/nosey. 😆

I buy for 8 people: my children, husband and my parents.
I obviously couldn't reduce it any further, but I do sometimes wish I still had a relationship with the rest of my family which meant I'd be buying for them too.

BirthdayFlower · 02/11/2023 11:34

21 in total. Only ones I'd rather not be buying for are DH's godchildren (yes he should be doing it).

RenoDakota · 02/11/2023 11:35

Partner, son and daughter and that is quite enough for me.

ManchesterLu · 02/11/2023 11:41

I only buy for my parents, brother and grandparents. Me and DP don't do gifts because we just get each other things through the year to make it more spontaneous. He only buys for his parents, son and nephews. I have pulled back a lot over the years for who I buy for, as I just don't have the budget to be able to do that.

Apossum · 02/11/2023 11:43

Oh fucking loads. Let’s see;
Husband
Toddler son (I’d like to leave it at just those two!)
my mother
My grandmother
Siblings / Husband’s siblings x7
Nieces and Nephews x 7
Sister in laws x2
Mother and father in law
My best friend, her husband and their two sons (tend to opt for a ‘family present’ there)
Husband’s best friend and fiancée
Husbands godson
Something for each of our employees/self employed guys who do quite a bit for us throughout the year x8
Next door neighbours family (something v small really!)
Our accountant

so that’s 39.. expensive. Varying budgets per person of course but still. Pretty grateful for this thread actually, it’s made me write my list so I had better get started shopping!

FeltCarrot · 02/11/2023 12:10

I buy for DH my 2 adult DC, DM and stepdad and 3 nieces.
DH gets his mothers gifts and mine.
We stopped buying for nieces/nephews at 21, and other adults a couple of years ago although we do a secret Santa if meeting up on the big day.

cocksstrideintheevening · 02/11/2023 12:26

I buy for my two kids, give the kids money to buy something for DH and he does the same we don't buy anything for each other as we buy what we need / want throughout the year.

Then it's my mum, step dad and two nephews and my best mate because she always buys for the kids and she is child free and it doesn't seem fair.

DH sorts mil, his nephews and fil, step mum and step sister.

We have a family secret Santa with a £50 limit for anyone who is together on the day.

Much less stressful.

Terfosaurus · 02/11/2023 12:30

I buy for 13
I would like to buy for 13

WellDuh · 02/11/2023 13:07

I buy for my DC12 but my older DC are adults who no longer live at home. They get a bank transfer of cash. I buy for my DP. So presents for 2, cash for 2. This Christmas will be my cheapest one yet as youngest doesn't actually want much!

Nagado · 02/11/2023 14:51

@ChristmasCrumpet

I'm a Christmas lover, he's a bah humbug (why do these two types always end up together??) Since being with DH, I have discovered that it is life’s way of making sure that the humbug celebrates, while the Christmas lover doesn’t get carried away, turn the house into a grotto and sell one of their kidneys to pay for it all. We’re both Christmas lovers in our house and we end up egging each other on.

I’m trying to reply to someone who quoted me but it’s not working and it appears you can’t delete a post now. 🤷🏻‍♀️I’m confused.

I buy for Dh, ds (18), dm, ds&partner, db&dsil, dn and her son who is my great nephew. Mwynr a Secret Santa at work and a small gift for 1 or 2 closer colleagues. I love Christmas shopping and enjoy finding unusual gifts for people. I also do dh and dm a stocking as well aa one for ds.

Bbq1 · 02/11/2023 17:12

Forgot my best friend too. So, that's 10 - 13 people in total.

TheChosenTwo · 02/11/2023 17:12

42 on my list to buy for.
Would like to just buy for my own dc and anyone on my list under 18 which would make my list about 20 people long.

mondaytosunday · 02/11/2023 17:23

I buy for my two kids, my sisters who live abroad and my niece. I also buy gifts for my step grandkids (I have two, one and two year old). If there are people coming for Christmas meal I'll get them something, but I wouldn't if I wasn't seeing them (I'll be at my sisters this year so they are her friends). They don't buy me gifts nor my kids that I can ever recall. I used to send my PIL a Christmas bouquet but last year my FIL said they were poor quality and my MIL is in a home so probably nothing or a nice bottle of something if I see him.
Don't buy my friends anything, but I do send cards to about 50 people.

ChristmasIsComing2023 · 11/11/2023 21:59

I buy gifts for my 2 year old, my partner, my mum, my dad and my Grandma in my family. On my partners side of the family there’s his mum, step-dad, grandma, granddad, brother and 3 little kids that he needs to get presents for (with help from me as he struggles with choosing presents).
I also get presents for 2 friends and this year I will be buying for a new friend and her 2 kids too. There’s 2 animals that family members have that I’ll probably get a little gift for too 🤷‍♀️🙈
So that’s 16 people and 2 animals altogether that I have to either buy or think of gifts for or both 😂
I will also make some kind of Christmas themed sweet treats for my little ones toddler class teachers and give them cards made by him 🤗 I will also give cards to everyone I give presents to plus my aunties and uncles and a friend I don’t live close to ☺️

I wish I could buy more for my parents and my partner but I can’t afford to buy more 😩

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/11/2023 15:27

My 3 adult DS's
My friend
My friends dog!
Little token for lovely neighbour and something like a book for her 4 year old
I love buying presents!
I save a small amount monthly as I'm on lifelong disability benefits

housethatbuiltme · 12/11/2023 18:46

15... my 3 kids, my DH make up the bulk of my buying then just token gifts for my PIL, BIL, SIL, niece, 2x step nieces, 2 cousin and my aunt/uncle.

I WISH it was 18 though... it will be the first Xmas not able to buy my mam anything. Keep thinking of things I should have bought her in the past.

NovemberRain23 · 12/11/2023 19:23

Loads.

I like buying presents but only if I think the recipient likes receiving them. DH loves getting presents as does my mum. Both give great presents back. Neither of our just adults kids could care less I think.

Main bug bears are nieces and nephews. Lovely lovely humans but I never get any indication they have received my presents let alone if they like them. Weirdly their mum (SIL) will thank me for hers. Their family are always late with ours. They never post anything and then can never find them when we go round. They are busy people so I said lets not bother but apparently we HAVE to do gifts even if small and inexpensive ( and months late).

NovemberRain23 · 12/11/2023 19:59

@housethatbuiltme so sorry to hear that. Half of what makes Christmas special is the memories and love from the years before. Hope you have a lovely Christmas with the spirit of your mum there with you.

namestuck · 12/11/2023 20:03

DH, DCs, DM, DB, IL's, Nieces and nephews, Grandparents & Ddogs! Happy to buy for all apart from IL's - they have never made an effort with Us / DCs whatsoever, not a single visit. But It's important to DH so we do.

Juniperberries200 · 12/11/2023 20:39

No parents/Gps left so DH, DS 18, Dsis, because she's on her own and doesn't get any other presents, neighbours and my friend.

DH is hard to buy for because he has specific taste for his hobbies, tech and books. He's a Christmas present buying fan and I'm the Bah Humbug.

I'd be happy just buying for DS.

BeckhamSeven · 12/11/2023 21:46

We buy for 50 different people. 50! And some of them are multiple gifts (ie Aunty and uncle so technically two presents). It's absolutely exhausting. And we ran out of wrapping paper on Xmas Eve last year 😂
It makes it worse when we get a load of tat in return. My parents and my SIL, and my Aunty and cousin, always buy us lovely gifts. Others...not so great. Every January I say "that is IT. Not again!" And every December I still have the same list of people to buy for.

Pinkkisugarmouse · 12/11/2023 23:44

Kitkat1523 · 01/11/2023 22:13

Do you not have any other close family OP? Just curious….. I buy only for close family ….which includes DP, DM, DD, DSIL, DS1, DS2, x 3 GD, the dog , DN age 16 (the other nephews and nieces are over 18 now so we don’t buy anymore)

…..Hi KitKat

In response (finally 😆) no I don’t have a lot of close family to buy for. I am no contact with my parents and siblings. There was a lot of abuse in our upbringing and as siblings it kind of triggers it all again when we are together.

DH is a lot older than me and his parents died a long time ago. He has 2 living brothers but they don’t do presents.
He buys for his very grown up DD but nobody else except me.

I have decided to get something for my lovely singing teacher though. A year of lessons has been better for mental health than any therapy or counselling and I come away feeling so happy and proud. 🥰🎤
