Santa always brings a pile of books in our house, it's something the children have come to expect and enjoy.

I have a very bright almost 5 year old who loves more old fashioned style stories and struggles with themes involving threat (finds watching Peter rabbit on TV scary). Any suggestions?

She still enjoys picture books bit also likes short chapter books. She has really enjoyed the twitches and My naughty little sister. She also likes Brambly hedge. She has asked for the Olga de Polga book.

Any picture or chapter books your similar age children have enjoyed?

Milly Molly Mandy has a similar vibe to the My Naughty Little Sister books, so might be suitable.

WeirdPookah · 13/10/2023 12:41

Olga Da Polga has been enjoyed by my 5 year old.

She is also loving Paddington, which has given some discussion topics about old fashioned things in it, like the laundry being collected etc, which has been interesting.

Teddy Robinson is lovely, but looks out of print except for a Christmas special, which Father Christmas knows about as he gave it to my daughter!! The stories caused by girls to laugh out loud.

The Claude books! My new favourites for DD, just 5. Funny for kids and adults. I love them.

Colourfulponderings · 13/10/2023 12:45

The Worst Witch. My DD is very similar and these were so much fun. And enjoyable for the reading adult too.

The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark
Dick King Smith's Sophie books

Needmorelego · 13/10/2023 12:50

The Dirty Bertie books are funny reads.
Daisy and the trouble with ....books by Kes Gray.
Avoid Rainbow Fairies (so dull) and Horrid Henry (he is just an obnoxious little s..t).

Not a specific book recommendation, but you might look at the website books for topics. It's got lists of books by age, season, topic etc. I'm a teacher and I use it to give recommendations to children, or to choose books for the classroom.

Rabbit & Bear
Captain Pug
(Highly illustrated, straddle the read to them/then read themselves area)

If she still likes picture books the Oi cat series are still loved by my youngest who is just 6. he can read some of it himself.

LittleRedYoshi · 13/10/2023 13:41

There's a whole bunch of Enid Blyton short story collections, e.g. the Tricks and Treats one. They're thick like chapter books, but separate stories the same kind of length as a chapter. Ticks the box for both old fashioned and without threat (other than the odd one or two).

BlueChampagne · 13/10/2023 14:05

Katie Morag
Winnie the Witch

Guibhyl · 13/10/2023 14:07

I love Shirley Hughes books like Alfie :-)

TheOGSloth · 13/10/2023 14:35

My 5, almost 6 year old, enjoys the Mummy Fairy and Me books by Sophie Kinsella. She isn't the best reader but they have pictures (she finds big blocks of text intimidating) and we will read a sentence/paragraph each. She has also enjoyed the Sophie series of books by Dick King Smith.

Imicola · 13/10/2023 14:52

Rabbit and bear. Grimwood. The thames tide club. The magic faraway tree. And we're just reading one now, i think it's called the gorilla who wanted to grow up, which i think is a series. And also dick king Smith.

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 13/10/2023 15:06

Enid Blyton, The Faraway Tree (three books, I think) and the Wishing Chair, two books. With the original illustrations if you can get them.

TwigTheWonderKid · 13/10/2023 15:20

Definitely Claude! And Pippi Longstocking, The Family from One End Street, all the Eva Ibbotson books for younger readers.

Pippi longstocking

EcoCustard · 14/10/2023 14:49

Mudpuddle farm, Paddington & rabbit & bear are great books. My reception child enjoys a few pages being read to him. My girls loved the rainbow fairies ones they aren’t overly exciting but the were the ones that they started reading with chapters. Faraway tree was loved too.

Zitouna · 14/10/2023 17:26

Another vote for the Claude books! Hotel Flamingo is another nice series, as is Einstein the Penguin (a bit harder).

I loved Swallows and Amazons when I was 6ish, so maybe a bit soon for that, but they are lovely - very gentle but adventurous.

stridesy · 18/10/2023 14:31

My 6 year old loves there’s no such thing as mermaids and the unicorn and the rainbow poop book.
also she loved the ladybird learning to read my little pony books.
