@User202242 and @DrLucyVanPelt I did a DNA test via 23&me- it was very quick and very interesting. There are no further costs for using the basic site. I still log on for a browse every now then, several years after paying for the test.

It clearly works - I have found lots of people on the site who are related to me - it’s very odd indeed to see pictures of people halfway across the world who bear such strong visual resemblance to, for example, my grandmother and father, despite being distant relatives and I had no idea they existed.

They have 20% off, if you buy two kits atm.

@User202242 abd @DrLucyVanPelt Ancestry.co.uk is cheaper for a DNA test.

However, I am signed up to their six monthly renewal subscription service. The trouble is, if you cancel, you lose access to any trees you have created, so it turns out to be very expensive.

Having said that, the offer below looks reasonable:

Hello everyone :)
My oldest (8) is after some of the Harry Potter dolls (like barbie sized), specifically hermione because she is the coolest.. if anyone happens to spot them in their travels/whilst browsing and thinks it's a fab price can you let me know please?
We are moving house in 2 weeks so trying to pinch all of the pennies! :)

Thankyou all!
X

@Theimpossiblegirl - it’s the final day for Wilko today, (which is so sad). I was in my local shop yesterday and noticed some lovely and much-reduced Xmas trees. If you have one locally, it may be worth a quick visit.

Jacques are doing 20% off sitewide with OCTOBER20 or 25% off certain items with HALLOWEEN25, they make wooden toys. DS is 2 and got the cleaning set and the easel last year. The cleaning set was a huge hit, and he gets lots of use out of the easel but they put plastic wrap on the blackboard which is impossible to get off at the edges, I wish I'd picked a different one!

You keep access to your tree! Just not to the Ancestry owned records attached to it.

poostinkywink · 08/10/2023 14:47

I went for the boxing gloves for my teen son - I’m thinking I might actually use them too. I don’t think we can put a punch bag up in the house - anyone find any bargainous punch pads? Is there an alternative to pads that doesn’t require me to drill a hole in my ceiling?

Dee1224 · 08/10/2023 14:50

Thanks @BarryKentPoet

6monthstillChristmas · 08/10/2023 15:39

@DrLucyVanPelt I have a pair of Naledi earrings (pearl drop ones) and can vouch for them: lots of complements and they came well packaged in a little cotton gift bag. I’m not sure I’d pay full price for them, but the sample sale seems to stack with codes so I’ll put my £15 off one on the referrals thread as I don’t think there’s a minimum spend.

flumposie · 08/10/2023 15:49

Thanks @Waystation a great little set

Does anyone know if Ancestry DNA kits or similar ever get a reduction pre Christmas or on Prime events etc? Currently £69. I know it's a bit niche but it's been suggested by the recipient as an idea!

No I've never seen a great deal come off then, Black Friday is your best bet

Thanks @InterFactual for the links ❤️

SpoilerFree · 08/10/2023 16:14

Just an FYI to the people looking into ancestry and DNA testing... in the last week it was reported that 23andMe data was being shared and sold on hacker forums. The sample being sold supposedly contained 1 million data points belonging to people of Ashkenazi and Chinese descent. The data seems to have been aquired by "credential stuffing" and the companies own "DNA Relatives" feature. Having a strong password that you do not reuse elsewhere will help mitigate the dangers of hacking, but you should be aware that DNA services and the data they hold on you are targets. GEDmatch (2020), FamilySearch (2022), MyHeritage (2018), Ancestry's RootsWeb (2017) have also all had leaks or breaches.
