Jesus Christ. If a new mum who happens to be reading this can I just say:

  • you don't have to have a 1st December box
  • you don't have to do elf on the shelf
  • you don't have to do Christmas Eve boxes
  • and you can still have a magical Christmas.
It's commercialised crap designed to make mums (specifically mums) feel like crap unless they buy into it.

You do not have to. It is fun though!

Never heard of December 1st boxes. Never did Christmas Eve boxes, and thankfully missed the Elf trend due to dc being too old when it became A Thing.

what happened to a simple sticking, and presents in Christmas day?

I know. 🙄

I actually think the children get a bit blasé with the slow trickle of gifts in December.

And even if you do participate in this nonsense, why do you need ideas for it.
If you can't even think of what to put in the box, it suggests to me, that you don't need the December 1st box.

Does no one use the word pyjamas anymore?

'PJs' really gets on my very last nerve.

How about the gift of an actual future on this planet if we end this silly consumerist greed? You don't have to keep up with every daft social media trend that makes you want to buy more pointless stuff you and your kids don't need.

This isn't about being miserable either, they will get fun stuff on Christmas but the boxes full of stuff is just silly. You can get them colouring on Xmas Eve/1st Dec or new pajamas, but boxes force you to add additional crap.

Of course they don't! You put in as much as you want. We have one box for our family. Same box for Christmas Eve and 1st December. All I actually buy is some stickers and crafting bits and a box of celebrations for the advent calendar, some pyjamas. That is across both boxes. I also put in Christmas cups and plates, along with books and the elves. Same ones every year.

Needmorelego · 05/10/2023 09:37

@Ameanstreakamilewide
I call pyjamas a variety of:
Jammies
Jim Jams
and my favourite
Pyjammies
😂

Marketing genius - convincing people to buy a set of pyjamas for every member of their family to wear for less than one month.

And then the next year the children are a size up so they get to sell you a whole new set because they've convinced you that this is a tradition now.

Mindless consumption.

A PP said she was spending £65-£70 on new pyjamas, which was becoming too expensive.

So, stop buying them. You don't need 'em.

pizzaHeart · 04/10/2023 07:15

Usually the same stuff as in 1st November box.

Sod all! 😂

Needmorelego · 05/10/2023 09:39

@Ameanstreakamilewide no one has said they are giving loads of gifts as a trickle throughout December - it's basically getting the Christmas themed stuff out to prepare for Christmas Day.
Not really "gifts".

Ameanstreakamilewide · 05/10/2023 09:39

Dnendns · 04/10/2023 07:25

I buy new blankets, pjs and mugs every year.
Same Xmas bedding though.

How many blankets do you need??

'PJs' really gets on my very last nerve.

I'm also wondering how many sets of "PJs" people have!

I have 2 nighties and 1 pajama set, and that has been sufficient for the last several years. The last time I bought new was not far off a decade ago.

If I was bought a new set every Xmas it would be wasteful because within a few years I'd have far, far more than I actually need. I simply don't wear them out at that rate.

You need to read all the posts, as several.people have said the boxes contain gifts. Small gifts in some cases, but gifts nonetheless.

Sick of what social media, influencers and competitive overspending has done to Christmas. It's so depressing.

And American film culture, as well.

Since when are Christmas cookies a thing over here?

Needmorelego · 05/10/2023 09:43

@TarantinoIsAMisogynist apologises but I haven't really seen that.
Maybe I am reading it differently as to what counts as a "Christmas Gift" to be given on the actual day.
Every family is different in how they do things. In the big scheme of life....does it matter?

Christ, after the first 3 or so pages of replies not answering the question but just having to point out how awful they find the very idea because it’s so terribly consumerist don’t you know, you wouldn’t think anyone else would feel the need to repeat basically the same thing, but people just can’t help themselves can they?

I don’t think of it as a ‘Dec 1st box’ exactly, but Christmas starts in our house on 1st December. Yes I know it’s not the old fashioned view of 12 days of Christmas etc, but it’s how we like to do it so there we are. I do in fact have a huge box in the garage that is full of Christmassy stuff and we will get it out at beginning of December so essentially it’s a Dec 1st box. It contains:

—lots and lots of Christmas or winter themed picture/ story books - most of these I’ve had from my teaching days, and others I’ve picked up in charity shops since DD was born. The last couple of years I’ve done a book advent calendar type thing, wrapping one up for each day in December to open and read together. The first year it was a big hit, last year not so much so I think I’ll just have the books out in a basket and we’ll read them as and when.
-Christmas colouring sheets/ books, old cards and bits of ribbons/ bows that I’ve saved from previous years and we can use for craft/ play this year
-wooden Lanka Kade Christmas/ winter figures - I admit I bought these new for DD’s first Christmas, hideous commercial sheep that I am. She sets up little scenes and things with them
-Wooden nativity set from Aldi - bought new last year but if I promise we will use it for many more years maybe I’ll just about get away with it?
-Christmas cookie/ play dough cutters and a Christmas apron - terribly commercial planet-killing etc etc but were given to us a gifts a few years ago so not actually my fault directly those ones

We also have a fabric advent calendar (made 40+ years ago by my MIL for her boys and then gifted by her to DD) with pockets that we will fill with little bits and bobs - probably mostly chocolate coins

We put on Christmas bedding - hand me downs from friend’s children and used every year. Also have a set for DH and I’s bed which my mum bought me the year before she died - 13 years ago now, and I still use every year (more of a wintery theme than Christmas exactly). And we swap our hand soap dispensers for Father Christmas and Snowman shaped ones - bought with the soap in about 6 years ago now and re-used/ refilled.

I will probably add a couple of craft kits, baking bits or art supplies as and when I see things that are affordable and I think DD would enjoy. I like having things available and to hand, and it makes sense to me that we would keep those things in … well a box.

Wait for it … we also have an (admittedly much smaller) Easter one (spring/ Easter stories, plastic eggs we use for egg hunts, bunny, egg and chick shaped cutters, sticker books and craft stuff, bonnet grandma made, bunny ears and stuff for role play/ dressing up) AND horror of horrors a Halloween one (a light up pumpkin, couple of plastic bowls/ cauldrons that she can use to make ‘potions’ in when playing, fabric leaves that we use for Autumn themed tuff trays with different animal figures etc, a few paper decorations we put up)

🤣 we have spring and Halloween ones too.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 05/10/2023 09:48

Christmas toilet paper?!

Literally on page 1 of the thread, a poster said that she includes in her 1st Dec box: "...some chocs, a christmassy dress each, hair clips..."

Those are gifts, not family heirlooms that come out each year. I could find plenty more examples if I went through the thread.

You may define a 1st Dec box as something you keep your decorations and traditional stuff in, but lots of people on the thread clearly don't define it in the same way you do.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 05/10/2023 09:55

I'm also shocked by the number of people justifying giving Xmas themed pyjamas on 1st Dec as "otherwise they only get a day's wear".

A month's wear is barely better than a day though! It's total waste of the resources that went into making the clothes.

Other posters have said they wear their Xmas pyjamas all year, which isnt wasteful (provided they actually needed the pyjamas and dont already have loads).

Naively I had assumed that wearing them all year was what everyone would do, before reading this thread and realising that some people do actually stop wearing them after Xmas. (Hence the cries of "But you only get to wear them for a day if you get them on Xmas eve!")

Riverlee · 05/10/2023 09:58

Not even one day if you only sleep in them!

Needmorelego · 05/10/2023 10:04

@TarantinoIsAMisogynist personally I wouldn't call new clothes and hair accessories "Christmas gifts" - people get new clothes all the time because they either wear out or grow out of them.
It is all down to how you interpret what is a "gift" and what is "everyday life stuff you would be buying anyway even if Christmas didn't exist".

CallieQ · 05/10/2023 10:37

Xmas pyjamas 🙄

Needmorelego · 05/10/2023 10:44

@CallieQ or just a new pair of winter pyjamas that are needed anyway and happen to have a print of reindeers on....

Parker231 · 05/10/2023 11:46

What happens to Christmas pj’s after Christmas?

Needmorelego · 05/10/2023 11:54

@Parker231 they get worn until worn out/outgrown I assume?
I literally wear pyjamas till they have gone into holes. I don't care whether they have stripes, dots or Santa faces on....I wear them whenever.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 05/10/2023 12:09

Does no one need winter pyjamas, or outgrow last year’s, earlier than December 1st?

JCWiatt · 05/10/2023 12:33

Parker231 · 05/10/2023 11:46

My DC continue to wear them until they outgrow them or they're worn out. Have 3 DC, so any particularly nice ones are kept to hand down.
