Christmas for one from Ocado

PlatinumBrunette · 01/10/2023 16:26

I get to spend Christmas alone this year and so have nabbed an Ocado slot for 23rd.

Don’t usually bother as DH would normally do the main shop, while I sort meat out from farmison.

So, what shall I treat myself to?

I really am done with cooking big labour intensive meals.

Ready meals? Easy-cook, pre-prepped stuff and easy, snacky, fancy food I wouldn’t normally choose is on the cards. But it all seems to be ‘party-sized’ packs!

I like my food, but this seems excessive, even for Christmas!

Charlie Bingham ready meals? I like them as a treat when I’m on my own especially the chicken tikka or the Mac and cheese, they also do a sticky toffee pudding which tastes amazing with some posh ice cream. I haven’t looked at the Christmas range yet but last year we ordered the macarons which were amazing. Also the mini sausage rolls that have chutney in them 😋.

GettingStuffed · 02/10/2023 11:20

I wouldn't bother with meals and just buy stuff to snack on. Crisps, nuts and cheese being favourites. Plus expensive bath stuff

PlatinumBrunette · 02/10/2023 16:02

Ooh yes, Charlie Bingham is definitely not on my usual radar, thank you.
And many snacks are a given, surely?!

If it was just me I’d maybe get some party food stuff and an elaborate cheeseboard! Couple of bottles of wine, a lot of treats.

BlueYonder57 · 02/10/2023 16:12

My idea of heaven is my Christmas's alone! I love making a lamb kfetiko - slow cooker, chuck in small lamb joint, pearl onions, potatoes and pretty much any root veg you like, garlic, olive oil, splash of wine to your preference (dry or medium white or red both work), garlic, lemon juice, chopped oregano and diced feta. Leave to cook for hours and hours and hours (slower and longer the better - I leave it all to marinade overnight and start cooking early). Sit back with a glass of whisky or two. Loads of tasty leftovers can be frozen. Eat with lovely bread that soaks up the juices. Drink more whisky.

Dreamy!

If i was alone for Christmas I'd bill buy all the party food picky bits and all the nice Xmas snacks and ferrero rocher and loads of wine.

BHRK · 02/10/2023 16:15

I’d get myself a cheeseboard, antipasti meats, posh sausage rolls.. and Champagne

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/10/2023 16:23

I think I would go for something like this.

Breakfast: orange juice (a bottle of 'freshly squeezed', scrambled eggs, almond or other good croissant

Later in the day, posh crisps.

Main meal, whenever you fancy it:

  • Nice things to drink, whatever floats your boat
  • Some form of seafood - posh prawn cocktail or dressed crab or smoked salmon - something not too big and filling, just as an appetiser
  • Possibly some decent crusty bread to have with the foregoing and to mop up the juices from the next course ...
  • A really good steak, which I would have with posh oven chips and a big salad, possibly also garlic mushrooms - the chips and mushrooms could be done before grilling or frying the steak; plenty of mustard to hand.
  • Some very nice cheese, plus some expensive crackers and oatcakes
  • A lovely selection of fruit, perhaps some good ice cream
  • Some expensive chocolates and good coffee
butterwithtoast · 02/10/2023 16:31

Ocado have the lovely haute fromagerie cheese boards, I'd get a small one and some posh crackers.

That's not a problem; I'm in training for mad cat woman right now (and dog!)

Thank you! I'll come back later and make a list

Cheese, cheese and more cheese. Posh crackers and posh pate, lurpak and an array of chutneys, my kind of heaven!

KiteofUncertainty · 02/10/2023 17:21

@PlatinumBrunette
The thread title caught my eye - I'm doing the same this year and really looking forward to it, truth be told. I don't like a lot of traditional Christmas food so I'm going to be able to please myself. I will shamelessly copy all the good ideas.

Gasp0detheWonderDog
That would hit the spot.

butterwithtoast
Good tip, thanks.

KiteofUncertainty · 02/10/2023 17:32

Just had a gander - if you search under "Cheeseboard" and "Christmas" there are some posh selection packs of cheese, cured meats, mince pies, chocolates, biscuits etc which look manageable for one person over a couple of days, or a few days. Lots of delicatessen type stuff.

dontforgetme · 02/10/2023 17:38

If I was having Christmas alone I would 100% order an Indian and get pissed Grin

PlatinumBrunette · 02/10/2023 19:06

I am making A List 😁 Thank you for the ideas.
So far I have Ferrero Rocher and Mince Pies on it. Sorted!
Having just finished dinner, I don’t have the urge to look at more food right now, so I’ll be back.

Can I come to yours for Christmas Day please?! This all sounds delicious!

chimichangaz · 02/10/2023 19:46

I had Christmas Day on my own last year and can honestly say it was one of the best ever!!

I fancied a proper Christmas dinner so I bought a small turkey crown and veg, didn't have a starter but had a decadent pudding (can't remember what now) followed by lashings of wine crisps and snacks through the day. Plus I binged the Traitors.

Planning the same sort of thing this year so keeping an eye on this thread for ideas 😊

INeedNewShoes · 02/10/2023 20:18

Camembert to bake, with cranberry jelly, crudites, sliced crispy apples and crusty half-baked bread (Ocado are now stocking a Jason's sourdough bake-at-home which I'm looking forward to trying).

If you fancy a roast, I'd get a duck or a turkey crown or you could stuff a turkey breast, wrap in bacon and cook that (I actually did this for DD and I last Christmas as it was just us).

I'd have lots to nibble like clementines (the cardboard box of them with the leaves still attached were fab last year), chocolates, nuts etc.

And nice drinks. Christmas tea if you like different teas, bottle of fizz and orange juice to make bucks fizz, a half bottle of nice wine.

KiteofUncertainty · 02/10/2023 20:23

Yes, aromatic teas are a lovely idea if you're into that sort of thing.
And speaking of clementines with the leaves on, how about walnuts in their shells?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 02/10/2023 20:41

A bottle of port, a bottle of champagne, Bendicks Bittermints, smoked salmon to go with scrambled eggs, a tonne of salted peanuts, medjool dates, a selection of cheeses and assorted crackers.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 02/10/2023 20:42

I forgot coffee ice cream.

nettie434 · 03/10/2023 09:53

androidnotapple · 02/10/2023 16:32

Christmas slots are £90 minimim

But you can always include expensive items that don't have a sell-by date, like washing powder or dishwasher tablets. Actually, a turkey crown alone would go a long way towards meeting the minimum price order.

Gasp0de's menu sounds lovely. I like the idea of cooking something like steak that would be a treat but doesn't like long to prepare. Portobello mushrooms would make a lovely alternative for vegetarians and vegans.

beeswaxinc · 03/10/2023 12:40

Oh gosh Christmas alone sounds heaven, as much as I am so looking forward to our day, it will be absolutely hectic!

I would do this:

Breakfast - My favourite cafe toastie or panini brought the day before and taken home in the wrapper, caramel shortbread, iced latte with Monin syrup, probably the Praline or Pumpkin Spice flavour.

Obligatory Christmas day drinking - pink gin with fancy lemonade and loads of ice.

Dinner - My fave Chinese takeaway bought the day before with some Fentiman's Rose Lemonade.

Pudding - Marshmallows dipped in melted Galaxy chocolate.

Late evening - lovely mulled wine to cosy up with.

The Grinch and Harry Potter movies on all day. In the evening (pre mulled wine) fancy bath stuff, scented candle and a new book in a long hot bath. Fancy face mask. Pajamas on all day but glam hair and makeup done, perfume on.

I think I'm coming down with something on the 25th this year and will have to send DP and the kids round to my mum's without me...
