Looking for inspiration for lovely dinners - a bit more special than the usual spag bol et al - to have over the Christmas holidays. What do you all eat between Christmas and New Year for an evening meal or nice lunch? Thanks!

Lentil and bacon soup with crusty bread.

Redlarge · 25/09/2023 18:50

I find something lighter in between is nice. Grilled fish with lemon and salad. New pots or potatoe salad.

Whataretheodds · 25/09/2023 18:52

Salmon en croute
Broccoli and Stilton soup (usually after christmas)
Bubble and squeak (definitely after)
Lentil soup made with stock from turkey carcass (ditto)
Turkey chips and gravy (ditto)

We do very easy but hearty things like campfire stew, chilli con carne, pizza and salad, lasagne with garlic bread, pigs in blankets baguettes, fajitas with all the extra bits like guacamole and sour cream etc that I usually don't bother with for just a normal midweek meal.

Mulled wine chicken stew
Beef casserole with mushrooms and chestnuts
Cheeseboard pasta bake

You’d enjoy Nigel slaters Christmas chronicles

We love a fondue and can be handy to use up some of the cheese depending on what you’ve got!

Avacadoandtoast · 25/09/2023 19:55

Steak pie

Macaroni cheeze with truffle oil has become a go-to on a Xmas Eve for me.

I am vegan but I like to make meals with the leftover no turkey roast. Things like a decadent korma or chilli etc.

mathanxiety · 25/09/2023 20:08

Turkey pot pie.
Louisiana style red beans and rice.
Lentil, potato, and veg soup.
Minestrone soup, crusty bread.
Fettuccine Alfredo with roasted broccoli.
Nigella's Vietnamese chicken salad made with leftover turkey instead of chicken.

Waitrose don't do priority booking, when the slots are released, they're released for everyone, it says so on their website. It must be regional - will keep checking.

Delias deep onion tart

Fish pie as a change from all the meat. That said. I love a hot pork sandwich - just roast pork with stuffing and apple sauce on a baguette. Often have this on Christmas Eve or between Christmas and New Year - indulgent but easy and tasty.

Xiaoxiong · 26/09/2023 06:11

You need two books - Nigel's Christmas Chronicles, as mentioned up thread, and this one on winter food which is fab - I have the original but it's just been fully updated and re-published:

Baked gammon with cauliflower cheese or colcannon.

Steak and kidney pie with potatoes Boulangere.

Spanish chicken casserole with saffron rice.

With all the heavy rich food I’m usually craving simple tasty things like beans on toast and scrambled eggs, I’m like a peasant compared to everyone’s fancy delights!

Broodywuz · 26/09/2023 10:37

This year i'm trying to be prepared and have lot's of pre frozen meals. Homemade spag bol, curry, butcher steak pie etc so we don't have to spend the holidays thinking about food. I always find i'm so food obsessed in the run up to christmas and with the way it lands this year we have almost 2 weeks off after christmas day, I just want things i can take out the freezer

Hibernatalie · 26/09/2023 12:27

Sorry I replied on the wrong thread earlier lolGrin

Ooh I've never thought if using truffle oil. I have made it with truffle cheese but expensive and hard to feed now

BlueBlubbaWhale · 26/09/2023 17:08

We have picky bits but witha bigger choice than normal and I often do some warm bits with it, naice cheese and crackers, bubble and squeak with eggs, gammon, egg and chips, a curry with leftovers from xmas day or sometimes two Christmas dinners because I love an Xmas dinner.

BlueBlubbaWhale · 26/09/2023 17:09

Melted camembert with things to dip.
