Stocking fillers for 6 1/2 year old girl

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 24/09/2023 20:24

I'm getting DD a Gravitrax starter set, a potion making kit (which I think will be a big hit) and some books (yet to be identified). But I would love some good stocking ideas. She likes: cheetahs, maths, climbing, coding, science, rocks, nature and crafts. She is completely uninterested in what she wears as long as it doesn't feature the now-banned pink or unicorns, regards lip balm as the devil's work and has eczema so can't really have bath bombs. Last year's biggest hit was a mini microscope - we work on the basis that Santa brings stocking presents but I was quite annoyed he was getting the credit for that one. Any inspiration for something which would go down equally well would be much appreciated.

My dd will be 7 1/2 at Xmas so a year older but im getting her a rubix cube. Is that something your daughter may like?

Also a keyring sewing kit from hobbycraft and maybe a tamGotchi (the ones based on the 90s style, not the expensive ones). That's as far as I've got so far. Oh and a cuddly toy like every year

Threeplusmore · 24/09/2023 20:30

Maybe get on the gift website of ZSL. (London Zoo).

NuffSaidSam · 24/09/2023 20:30

Craft bits - glue sticks, blu tack (surprisingly popular here!), masking tape, stickers, colouring pens/glitter pens/gel pens/one of those four in one bics

Fimo clay

Hama beads

A science themed notepad for her to record her observations/results.

Some rocks/a fossil/a gem collection/some shells/bones (once had a child get a skull and it was the gift of the year!).

A magnifying glass

A calculator

Some climbing equipment - I don't what climbing requires...chalk? Gloves? Some sort of rope?!

A torch

The standard pants/socks/hat/gloves/scarf

NuffSaidSam · 24/09/2023 20:31

A head torch could be better than a hand held if she's busy exploring.

A basic tool kit (proper tools not toy ones).

NuffSaidSam · 24/09/2023 20:31

A pen knife

doodlejump1980 · 24/09/2023 21:10

A six my boys were obsessed with stationery. They got their own sellotape and blu-tac and thought it was the best thing ever!

Crumbcatcher · 24/09/2023 21:23

I got a few bits in the Entertainer toy shop - a small Geomag set for £3 and a tin of glow putty also £3. Took me ages to choose the putty as they had metallic, colour change, transparent and glitter too!

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 24/09/2023 22:00

Some great ideas here, thank you! She loved my old-school calculator before it died, so that's a great shout.

Chess set? Ds was 6 when he got his own travel set and its still one of his favourite things.
Top Trumps game? Loads of options for animal and science themed ones.
Head torch
A Smart Game? we have several and my kids love them. You get a book with challenges to set the board up with and then you have to place the remaining pieces correctly. They usually have at least 30 challenges increasing in difficulty.
One of those crystal trees that grow?
Toothbrush and toothpaste in a different flavour. Citrus was a bit hit last year.

asterel · 24/09/2023 23:02

Things that went down well here around the age of 6-10:

crystal trees or crystal growing kit

gyroscope (I still remember getting a gyroscope in my own stocking one year with great fondness)

a compass - perhaps one on a karabiner so that she can attach it to her bag

a whistle that sounds like an owl call

A set of silk “daisies” or “buttercups” that you can make into an artificial daisy chain - NT shops do them

DD very much liked a super-whizzy stunt yo-yo that lit up at that age

A mini kaleidoscope or bug eye viewer

one of those dinosaur egg things that swells up and “hatches” in water

a paper laser

glitter bouncy ball or light up bouncy ball (I got DD a polyhedron rubber bouncy ball from the Tate shop that lit up - that went down well!)

Sunlight photography/contact paper sets (you can get mini kits from the national trust - very stockingable)

a cat’s cradle string and instructions

new skipping rope

harmonica or other small musical instrument like mini wooden pan pipes

one of those ceramic bird callers that you fill with water to use as a bird whistle

a UV light invisible pen set

marbles

game of jacks or travel chess or Ludo or similar

light up flashing bath disco light

a magnet science kit

set mini highlighters

interesting bookmark/s

paper clips in the shape of bicycles, cats and dogs

DD always also gets small notebooks, washi tape, pens, hair things, some kind of bath thing (usually a luxury soap from TK Maxx), and a little cuddly toy of some kind - her favourite was a Mouse in a little house box from Rex London;

One year DD’s absolutely favourite stocking item was one of those multicolour biros with twelve colours that I’d got cheap from Tesco!

For ideas: look at National Trust shops; museum shops; Rex London for great small games and toys; John Lewis pocket money sections.

If I can remember any others I’ll post them! I love doing the stockings and spend all year collecting interesting little things for them. I’m a bit sad that DD is getting older and isn’t as keen on things like this any more 😭

asterel · 24/09/2023 23:04

Oh and for coding - a micro:bit?

asterel · 24/09/2023 23:14

The light up bouncy polyhedron was similar to this one:

But I also remember I got DD a prism kit as well one year which she enjoyed, and another year some kind of hanging window sun-catcher that she made herself out of crystals that you then baked in the oven to make a kind of coloured glass, and that was fun.

A flashing LED bouncy ball in tactile prism shape for random bounce & bags of fun! Bounce to activate flashing prism ball, buy sensory toys at The Glow Company

Shwighty1 · 24/09/2023 23:23

I’ve been looking at an amber gemstone archeology kit on Amazon or the jumbo pirate excavation, the emoji game (card game), stuntz Lego sets go down well too

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 25/09/2023 00:09

These are so useful! Thank you.

I'm now going to while away the hours on the NT and ZSL websites...

@asterel , your DD sounds like quite a kindred spirit of mine (or at least her younger self does).

Dc3 will be 6.5 at Christmas and ideas so far are a:
Rubiks Cube
Stomp Rocket
lego Technic Monster Mutt Dalmatian
stationary
tape dispenser & scissors as she is always borrowing mine
Switch lite & racing game
Football boot bag
Top Trumps Landmarks
stack of books
Will whittle that down and pass on to relatives when they ask for ideas.

TolkiensFallow · 26/09/2023 20:40

Mine (same age) likes the national geographic society science kits. She also likes fossils and geomes.
She had a potion making kit which went down well on her birthday.

Mine is still into the girly stuff and pink aswellso I’ve just got the accessorise sale pretty hard.

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 27/09/2023 01:10

A tape dispenser is a good shout. I'll look out for a cheetah-themed one (although I think she would also accept sea otter or shark). Mind you, she commented at bedtime that she would really like a squishy model of a lung, which I definitely didn't see coming. (I think she was inspired by some ancient Egyptian canopic jars we made with noodles for intestines and dried tea bags for lungs. She has a taste for the macabre.)

I just bought the SmartGames mini IQ for my sons stocking. A tiny puzzle game which the player can change and there’s always a solution. I had a play when it arrived and now want one too..

Impatientwino · 28/09/2023 06:46

These ideas are great, my DS is a similar age and will love an owl whistle!

Re sellotape I got this for DS last year and it was his favourite present!

Can I ask what potion making kit you went for? Sound rights up my daughter's street. Thanks

Absolutely love this @Chasetherainblownfearsaway I've just ordered the rainbow fizzing potion set for my DD who will be 7 in November. I've got an assortment of gifts stashed as she has birthday and Christmas so close together so some of these might be presents rather than stocking fillers:

Lots of crafty bits (will get a tape dispenser now too!)

Some fancy hair clips and headbands from Mimi & Lula plus this hair clip organiser/display for her room: https://mimiandlula.com/collections/lifestyle/products/rainbow-wall-hanger

I've also got a flower press, a silver necklace with her initial on which I got in the Next sale and a crystal growing set.

Rainbow wall hanger

Your clip storage prayers have finally been answered, and in the cutest way possible! Yay!! • Rainbow in a combination of pretty glitter, matte and metallic fabrics• Pretty satin ribbons featuring gold glitter padded stars• Rainbow measures approx H9cm...

ShowOfHands · 29/09/2023 07:23

My ds is 12 now but sounds like he had some similar tastes at that age.

He had little replica canopic jars in his stocking one year and a replica sarcophagus. They're only a couple of inches long. The sarcophagus opens and has a mummy in it. He still treasures them.

Weirdly, the biggest hit at the same age was an ancient letter opener I found in a charity shop. It's made from bone. He adores it to this day.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 29/09/2023 07:33

Great thread, I'm just place marking

My DC favourite ever present was a load of little plastic boxes in a rack to store tiny things in
