What did you get / are you getting for your 9 year old dd - toys? Or will she be too grown up?

Dd is turning 9 just before Christmas.

I think she'll be a bit too grown up for toys like Barbies etc (although that's all she wanted last year)!

She loves cooking and diplodocuses 😂. Quite specific!

I've done a few experience day type gifts with her in the past but I don't think they went down all that well. So probably won't do that again.

The photo creator camera is excellent for that age - it uses thermal paper, no ink and you can print photos immediately. It does print in black and white only but comes with pens and stickers to decorate. My daughter has one for her birthday and we have photos everywhere!

My dc still play with toys, they just need dressing up a bit to make them seem more adult.

Lego, a skateboard, a Switch, a drone and craft stuff like resin sets, polymer clay, poscas, airbrush etc are all really toys. I just don't say "toy" when we talk about them.

Too old for toys at 9? That’s sad.

You must be bored. 😂My 9 yr old has never played with toys. Just not her thing.

To OP, I wrote a few moments ago on a thread for 8yr old girls but mine has adored a plug in waffle maker santa brought last year. She makes breakfast for everyone every weekend. And they are excellent waffles.

Or an icecream maker.

Other cheaper things that might suit are a bubble tea kit or a smores kit.

Maybe personalised apron and some cooking equipment? Kids cookbooks?

Mine also liked her lava lamp, new desk with ikea organisation board for all her pens and stuff, cat clock with swinging tail, electric toothbrush, electric blanket, echo dot to play audio books.

Hope that helps.

My almost 9 year old doesn't play with toys and hasn't for a while. She likes to play the computer, read, scoot/skate/cycle and play board games so she's getting a kindle reader, new playstation game, 3d pen and some games, bath bombs and clothes split across Christmas and birthday (end November). Also considering a digital camera and printer.

Previously well received gifts included laptop (she needed it for school anyway), roller skates/blades, playstation (oh technically bought it for himself), lava lamp, oodies, Nike air max, new earrings, squishmallows.

We have a house full of unused toys so trying to go down the small and practical route now.

BlairWaldorfOG · 14/09/2023 23:06

@Piplette which 3D pen did you get? My 8 year old had a Kindle e-reader for her birthday and loves it.

I’m looking at experiences this year, like you my DDs interests are very niecch. We are buying comic con tickets and looking at a few other experiences to try.

The Natural History museum do a Dino sleepover for kids she might like.

I’ve seen this that I think I’m going to get my 9 year old… yea a bit young but I think she’ll find it Fun!

it’s a thing that you mould into a shape then put in the included oven and it bakes into a swuishy!

APurpleSquirrel · 15/09/2023 13:47

My DD has just turned 9. She doesn't really play with toy's anymore either.
She's recently got very into Harry Potter, so got a lot HP stuff for her birthday including HP Lego, HP stationary, books etc. we took her the the Warners Studio Tour too.
For Xmas I've already booked tickets for Wicked for her & I; & am aiming to get her more HP stuff if she's still interested. She's also asked for a Tamagotchi, & loves stationary & arts supplies.
If you're DD likes cooking, could you look into some children's cookery classes?

sparkedsparkle · 15/09/2023 14:08

Definitely some games whether it be scrabble or Pictionary air!
Lego is always a good one, likewise puzzle games like rubiks or tangram or even an actual jigsaw puzzle.
The squashmallow pillow type things seem to be popular too

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 15/09/2023 15:14

My kids have never really been into toys so I have to be imaginative with gifts.
One gift my daughter loved was a set of rainbow Really Useful drawers which I then filled with loads of craft stuff.
Another hit was a Tefal Cake Factory machine (look around, I got it for around £50 last year) plus various boxes of cake mix and decorations, an apron, and a mixing bowl/utensil set.

Previous gifts that she also liked were board/card games, 'grown up' makeup sets to play with at home, a waffle maker, a sewing machine, snack boxes from various countries, a galaxy projector for her bedroom, and kawaii stationery.

DD was 9 last year and of her presents particularly liked: board games (Throw Throw Burrito; Sussed; Cluedo); a Switch + Animal Crossing; a giant cat pillow/cushion; a neon rainbow lamp; Harry Potter Lego.

JamMakingWannaBe · 16/09/2023 17:17

If she likes squishies, Aldi have some in stock this week. We managed to get the large cat-mermaid but the seal was nice too and the food is a decent size.

What did you get / are you getting for your 9 year old dd - toys? Or will she be too grown up?
Carouselfish · 16/09/2023 18:51

Dd8 would like some grown up things but she always wants her 3yr old sister's toys so she will also be getting things like polly pocket, bey blades etc

User3735 · 17/09/2023 02:36

My DD has just turned 10, and toys wise she received a few squishmallows from her recent party and was thrilled with them so that is one 'toy' that goes down well. She also likes Lego, Kenji stationary, and games. Family board games, card games etc She likes jewellery making (beads and loom bands) jigsaw puzzles etc non toys wise, she asked for an Air Up and Crocs for her birthday but isn't into fashion yet. I am torn between a Nintendo Switch or an electric piano for her for Christmas.

SootspriteSearcher · 17/09/2023 09:14

My dd is a bit older at 11. Shes at the age of not wanting to let go of her toys, but doesn't really play with them much. Some ideas she's loved the last few years.

She loves games- particularly boggle, no more llamas, exploding kittens, pass the pigs, dinopoloy (like monopoly but dino themed!), jenga, what came first, herd mentality.

She likes creative things- blow pens were a fun stocking filler one year, hama type beads, bag of various beads from shein to make jewellery, badge maker (was about £70 from amazon but came with 1000 badges!).

Crystals - bought a few mystery boxes from etsy and a book of their different qualities. Then I got a wooden chest from the works to store them all in and a selenite bowl to recharge them. She also has a cage necklace which you can change the crystal you are wearing. And a crystal chip tree she has on her desk with her favourite crystals on.

Jewellery has gone down well - bought a big pack of chokers cheaply off amazon, then some bits from shein too or claires in the sale.

A jurassic world tamagotchi- actually need to buy new batteries as shes used it so much!

Sheet face masks, which she likes using with our foot spa 🤣 then nail varnish and I got cute little nail stickers from shein.

An echo dot for her room with a Spotify subscription. Loves blasting out her music or asking random questions.

She still really likes sensory things so I got a cat litter tray, oorbeez (cheap version from amazon!), slime, kinetic sand, and cornflour to make gloop.

Cosy things like a giant squishmallow, fleecy covers, oodie style hoodie, hot water bottle (getting her a long one this year as she kept stealing mine!).

Giant jurassic world dinosaurs, still has 3 in her room and asked for another this year! I think they are called the super colossal ones, there is a brontosaurus. My dd is more of a raptor, t-rex fan.

Build a bear voucher? My eldest is 15 and still loves it in there! That shop has cost me a fortune over the years!!
