What did you get / are you getting for your 9 year old dd - toys? Or will she be too grown up?

Dd is turning 9 just before Christmas.

I think she'll be a bit too grown up for toys like Barbies etc (although that's all she wanted last year)!

She loves cooking and diplodocuses 😂. Quite specific!

I've done a few experience day type gifts with her in the past but I don't think they went down all that well. So probably won't do that again.

Just turning 9 is no way too old for toys or Barbie. Has she asked for anything yet? Maybe sound her out a bit?

FlorenceTheFerocious · 29/08/2023 10:22

Yes, I have asked her to start thinking of ideas, but I'd like to come up with some as well so it's a bit of a surprise.

I didn't say "way too old" I said "I think she'll be a bit too grown up for". She has barely touched her barbies in the past six months.

Ds is just 10 so similar age, his current go-to is board games or Pokémon cards. Dd at a similar age liked Sylvanian families and kids make up, craft sets, things to ‘do’ rather than imaginative play I suppose. They will all like different things though. I would take her round a toy shop now and say that granny (or whoever) wants Christmas ideas and you then take photos of the things she likes. Depends if you think she can handle doing that, by 9 mine were ok and understood it was for later, but you can always get a small back to school treat if needed for now.

Children are so different - at 9 my DD wasn't into toys at all and hadn't been for a long time - I don't remember what I got her then, but things like stationery, bath bombs, books. Whereas my niece is just 9 and she is super into barbies, lego, etc. So she's not too old BUT if she doesn't play with them, I wouldn't bother.

If she is into cooking and dinosaurs I'd go with nice cooking utensils, a funky apron, a trip to the Natural History museum - you know what she's likely to play with or use.

FlorenceTheFerocious · 29/08/2023 10:34

Lego set is definitely on the list as she does still enjoy that.

She doesn't do imaginative play like barbies anymore.

So it's definitely more doing gifts she would use now.

She is really keen to have her room redecorated which we're planning to do anyway, so I might get her some cool things to put in her room (diplodocus theme 🦕), but is that a bit of a cop out as we're going to decorate her room anyway 🙃

I have a 9.5 year old (with a 12 year old sister which could be relevant!) she isn’t into ‘toys’ any more - like barbie or rainbow high or things like that. Things on her wish list this year:
slime, craft kits/pens, possibly some Lego, top model sticker books, soft
she enjoys growing things so might get her a little herb growing set
clothes (but not bothered yet about names/brands too much), bag (mini hype one in particular) and jewellery- things like the basic accessorize or primark rather than Claire’s accessories
face masks/starter make up, again primark, starter skincare, simple
American sweets, things like candy floss maker, interestingly flavoured lollies

Just asked dd and she said if she doesn’t have a phone then maybe an SE 😂 she did get an iPad for Christmas last year which she uses daily for various things

Sorry soft was soft toys! We’re getting each of our kids something like the attached picture

FlorenceTheFerocious · 29/08/2023 10:43

She does love a plushie!

Definitely some ideas there I hadn't thought of so thank you @TheGirlWhoLived. Your username has also reminded me she loves HP, but so does her older cousin so we inherit a lot of her HP stuff.

We don't have a games console so I was considering that too as a joint present for all of them. But nobody has expressed more than a passing interest in gaming... except when they go back to school and people start talking about it there! That's usually the pattern

Pictionary Air
Crystal growing kit
Roller blades
Kumi Kreator
Light tracing box
Watch

RuthW · 29/08/2023 12:14

I would say crafts, books, games etc.

My dd had grown out of toys a lot before age 9.

mogtheexcellent · 29/08/2023 12:15

I have a dino loving 9 year old DD. She got a lot of Jurassic World lego for her birthday from family. From us we decorated her bedroom and got her this duvet set from M&S.

you can also buy fossils. I put a spinosaurus tooth in her stocking last year. Try Teeth and Claws or Jurassic Jim for fossils.

Instant camera?
Lava lamp for her room?
Harry Potter Lego (unless she has inherited it)

FlorenceTheFerocious · 29/08/2023 18:11

The bed covers and lava lamp are going on the list. Great suggestions for her.

Oo fossils are a great shout! Dh got me a megalodon tooth one year and it has pride of place on my table.

My dd will be 8.5 and is still into toys and gaming. Her cousin will be just 9 at Xmas and is into makeup, high heels and crop tops!

So far I have got my dd a fleece blanket with Pokémon on it, an Aphmau sparkly 3 set, squishmallow and kinetic sand.

FlorenceTheFerocious · 29/08/2023 20:21

The megaladon tooth / a fossil is a great idea.

I’m glad someone got the HP reference!! The kids have never been massively into it, there’s a great pop up book or the picture books are also great collectibles, I love the house themed sets too.

Another possible idea based on the lava lamp is a plasma lamp? It’s like an electric ball thing… dd loves hers!

TheGirlWhoLived · 29/08/2023 23:33

I personally think s games console is a great idea. My dd’s play so nicely on theirs! Would definitely recommend the Nintendo switch, probably with Mario kart or Mario party and maybe Lego Harry Potter? Simple but loads of fun!!

Too old for toys at 9? That’s sad.

FlorenceTheFerocious · 30/08/2023 08:14

Too old for toys at 9? That’s sad.

Not really? She still likes things like lego and crafts, but she won't sit and play with barbies. I'm sure I'll get over it, but yes, it's one of those milestones which are always bitter sweet.

I didn't want toys at that age as I just wanted horse stuff, so it doesn't seem that strange to me

My dd was much more interested in hobbies and crafts than toys at 9/10. She reverted to dolls again around 11. These things can ebb and flow.

The approach I’ve taken is that I will buy basic equipment for any activity but fancy or branded things are either birthday/Christmas gifts or she can save up herself and pay the difference.

KeepingKeepingOn · 30/08/2023 13:20

My 9yo does a lot of fashion / design stuff - so Harumika dolls with extra fabric squares has gone down well, as well as books on clothes designing. Have just bought her HP Pictionary Air, which was on offer, and I’m hopeful she’ll like. Other things I’ve bought her for Xmas - a family quiz game (she loves general knowledge), a Trolls waffle maker (and I’ll wrap up waffle ingredients), hairlights and nail art sticker things. She still plays with an Instax camera my MiL bought her, so am planning to get her some more film, a photo album and a peg display line for them as well.

Chocolatepumpkin · 30/08/2023 13:23

My 9 year old daughter loves her squishmallows and lego sets toy wise, arts and craft kits always go down well too.
