Bloody frozen turkey

I bought a frozen turkey crown (serves 8-10 people) from Iceland and put it in the fridge on Tuesday night to begin defrosting and it's still pretty solid this morning. I want to cook it early tomorrow morning (6am ish) so what can I do to get it totally defrosted before 6am tomorrow? I'm out for most of today so don't have the option to use cold water and keep changing it. Can they be cooked from part frozen? What if I leave it out in the kitchen all day with no heating on? The packaging on the box says defrost for 48 hours in the fridge so I can't understand why it isn't defrosted! Help!

I'd leave it out of the fridge overnight and then cook it at 6am in the morning.

The only other options you've got are

  1. Leave it in the fridge till tomorrow when it might still not be defrosted and you'll have to cook it partially defrosted.
  2. Leave it on the kitchen counter from now till 6am tomorrow morning where it could possibly become too warm.

Your shout really.

Think I’d leave it out of the fridge.

OrigamiOwls · 24/12/2022 07:59

I'd leave it out of the fridge and see how defrosted it was when you got back in this evening.

Theunamedcat · 24/12/2022 07:59

Keep it out the fridge then if it defrosts totally you can just shove it back in overnight

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/12/2022 08:01

Just leave it out on the side.

Ackity · 24/12/2022 08:02

I’d leave it out on the side and put it back in the fridge when you’re home.

Anotherbloomingchristmas · 24/12/2022 08:03

If you leave it in a cold kitchen it should be fine.
When you get home if it's thawed just pop it back into the fridge until christmas morning.
My sil is a chef and often left a smallish frozen chicken out all night ready to cook on a Sunday.

Oh @Cudz I could have written your post. Mine said 32-48 hours to defrost.

I put it in the fridge at 8.30 yesterday morning so it’s had almost 24 hours. Still rock solid. I’m panicking somewhat. This is why I don’t normally get a whole turkey.

Ive unwrapped mine too- which now I’m not sure is the right thing to do. I have covered it with cling film.

I honestly have no suggestion but sharing turkey solidarity!

Cudz · 24/12/2022 08:09

@Orchidflower1 I feel your pain! Bloody stressful isn't it!

Does anyone know if cold or eco is the cooler setting on a Bosch fridge? Ours doesn't show the temp so I don't know and Google isn't telling me - this dial is all I can see?

I know you're not supposed to defrost at room temperature, but I've done forever, I just can't seem to ever defrost anything in the fridge, it'll come out 24 hours later as frozen as it went in! I'm usually REALLY anal about near and food poisoning, but have cooked thousands (I'm assuming?! of meals with room temperature thawed meat)

Youngatheart00 · 24/12/2022 08:12

Eco is going to be the ‘warmer’ setting I’d suggest

how much other stuff do you have in the fridge?

userh79 · 24/12/2022 08:13

*meat!

namechangeymcchange · 24/12/2022 08:14

Just leave it out.

Put it in the microwave if you have a cat (voice of experience).

BahHumbug2022 · 24/12/2022 08:14

Definitely better defrosted than cooking it partially frozen.
What’s the problem with leaving it out?
You’ve got 4 hours out of a fridge before environmental health consider chilled food a problem. A massive frozen turkey will be fine out of the fridge until defrosted.

Cudz · 24/12/2022 08:15

I think I'll leave it in fridge until I'm home at about 6pm then take it out to thaw in our cold kitchen overnight, or is that leaving it too late? Aaaaagh!

I'd do the opposite- leave it out all day then in fridge overnight if it's defrosted.
If you do the opposite and it's still solid then you are screwed.

As long a heating isn't on/ cat can't eat it it will be fine. It's not 35 degrees outside!

DuchessOfDisco · 24/12/2022 08:18

Do you have a cold garage you could put it in to defrost? Find somewhere that’s not as cold as a fridge but not as warm as the kitchen

FairyBatman · 24/12/2022 08:19

Fill a sink with cool water and submerge it and change the water when it gets icy cold.

Water is a much better thermal conductor than air and will will defrost
faster and safer than leaving it out at room temperature.

Do this until you go out, just before you go pop it back in the fridge, and if it's still frozen when you get in later you can get it back in water again.

Redebs · 24/12/2022 08:19

I don't know any fridge that lets a frozen turkey defrost in 48hrs.
Unless it's turned off at the wall 🤔 most will still be solid inside a week later, with the outer parts gone off!
Cool spot in the kitchen, or well wrapped and cool spot outdoors should do it.

crimsonlake · 24/12/2022 08:20

Immerse it in it's sealed bag in a bucket of cold water, think you have to change the water every half an hour. Good luck.

Minniem2020 · 24/12/2022 08:21

I'd leave it out today too then put it back in the fridge overnight, nothing seems to defrost in our fridge.

TokyoSushi · 24/12/2022 08:23

DH was a Head Chef for many years, he defrosts at room temperature, get it outta that fridge! 😃

Topee · 24/12/2022 08:23

Leave it out today and put it in fridge overnight again if it’s defrosted.

I thought you defrost stuff on the side. Revelation that you're supposed to use the fridge!
