Bloody frozen turkey

I bought a frozen turkey crown (serves 8-10 people) from Iceland and put it in the fridge on Tuesday night to begin defrosting and it's still pretty solid this morning. I want to cook it early tomorrow morning (6am ish) so what can I do to get it totally defrosted before 6am tomorrow? I'm out for most of today so don't have the option to use cold water and keep changing it. Can they be cooked from part frozen? What if I leave it out in the kitchen all day with no heating on? The packaging on the box says defrost for 48 hours in the fridge so I can't understand why it isn't defrosted! Help!

Seriously OP just leave it out. Even a few hours is going to help. FWIW I leave my Turkey out overnight from frozen every year and it's wonderfully defrosted every year. Not warm or anything.

I feel like some people work themselves into such a worry over these kind of things Confused

Mine is currently outside in a lidded bucket because it's warmer than the fridge so will defrost quicker but colder than the house where it would defrost too quickly. If it's not defrosted by this evening I'll set it on the side aka in the microwave tonight (I don't have heating on overnight) and it will be defrosted by the morning

"take your chances" on a side defrosted turkey like most of the population! Some people love a worry.

😂

I’d stick mine in the garage, it’s about 6C here.

Highlights12 · 24/12/2022 12:06

I've got the same one & I've just taken it out to defrost at room temperature

Spanielsarepainless · 24/12/2022 12:08

Just leave it out.

bellac11 · 24/12/2022 12:08

This is why I never have a frozen turkey/crown and I dont defrost things in fridges either, I defrost on the top.

Leave it out the fridge for 3 hours and put back in the fridge to finish defrosting.

Nothing on those instructions says to me it can be cooked from frozen.

Unless your house is super warm, defrost it at room temp today.

Should’ve gone to Specsavers

How is your turkey doing @Cudz?

Trevor ( dh named him) 🦃 is still very frozen. He’s been out of the fridge since this morning. I’ve managed to get the giblets out so hopefully that will help.

Because I unwrapped him last night, I am reluctant to do the soaking in water thing.

Hoping he defrosts soon. I said to DH we shall just preorder a fresh one from Marks and Sparks next year and be done with it- I’d rather pay more, not have extra booze and have less stress!!

Notonyournellykelly · 24/12/2022 15:25

I think you can defrost meat safely and surprisingly quickly by putting them in cold water (in their shrink wrap).

Otherwise, I'd probably risk leaving it out of the fridge.

bizzywiththefizzy · 24/12/2022 15:25

I don't know if anyone has mentioned yet but do you have a fan , the kind you use in summer . Put it in front of that , the fast moving air helps it defrost .

DH was a Head Chef for many years, he defrosts at room temperature, get it outta that fridge! 😃

Mine is a chef too. Our fella is sat on a table in the garden and when he starts getting a bit softer he'll come in and spend the night in the kitchen. Unless he's completely defrosted at bedtime he won't go back in the fridge.

Orchidflower1 · 24/12/2022 16:11

@PAFMO I’m thinking of leaving ours out overnight if it’s not defrosted completely.

Worst case scenario and it’s still icy tomorrow morning shall I just give it an extra hour or two?

Cudz · 24/12/2022 17:29

I've just got home and he's defrosted quite a bit so will pop him back in the fridge overnight ready for cooking in the morning. I forgot how stressful hosting Christmas is! Hope yours are all defrosting nicely! X

If it's wrapped properly, stick it in a bucket of cold water. That's the most effective way to defrost.

Orchidflower1 · 24/12/2022 18:48

Thanks @AmandaHoldensLips - I unwrapped mine yesterday thinking it would speed it up- it didn’t.

Personally I'd keep it out until bedtime- if it's fully defrosted then it will come to no harm in the fridge as you're cooking it tomorrow.

Favouritefruits · 24/12/2022 19:18

Put it on a window sill behind the curtains overnight.

Orchidflower1 · 27/12/2022 17:40

Hey @Cudz hope you had a lovely Christmas and the turkey was edible.

Cudz · 27/12/2022 17:59

It all worked out fine thank you @Orchidflower1 . Hope yours went well too x
