What cheese for Christmas cheeseboard?

I need tried and tested recommendations!

So far I have:
Good vintage cheddar (dc1 fave)
Smoked Wensleydale (dc2 fave)
Stilton (DH fave)
Camembert (my fave)

All from the cheese shop, so hopefully good quality.

I want a final interesting one that we might not have tried before - I saw Cornish Yarg with garlic in the shop, but not sure.

We have visitors coming who have similar tastes to us - traditional, strong tasting. Don’t want anything too “out there” but want something to complement what we have.

I do like picos de Europa but they are generally very strong and an almost spicy blue, you have to be a pretty committed blue cheese person to like them. It's one of my top 3-4 cheeses though, but you just need to know what you're expecting and commit to eating it fairly soon after buying as they don't generally need to ripen further at home.

Epoisses, room temperature gooey.

Not necessarily for a festive cheese board, but I had President Creme de Brie a couple of weeks ago - Brie without the rind, and soft without leaving it out of the fridge. Seriously impressed, will definitely be getting some for home in the New Year.

I love cheese, I bought

Red Storm red Leceister
Kalbach Truffle
Snofrisk, hard goats cheese
Round Goats cheese
Soft Spreadable Goats cheese
Blacksticks Blue
No1 Village, triple cream cheese
Wensleydale Blue
Wensleydale
Cathedral City for DS

Oldraver · 22/12/2022 18:53

Oh and a nice smoked one, though I do have a strange penchant for the cheap smoked cheese

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 22/12/2022 18:56

Manchego is delicious

Oldraver · 22/12/2022 18:58

I've also got a few of those cheese bake things. Morrisons do a nice one with Chorizo and Jalepeanos which give a little but not too overwhelming additional taste. I've also bought the Aldi one but not tried it

Manchego is delicious

Literally came on here to say Manchego, it's my cheeseboard must have! Also enjoy a Roquefort.

Decafflatteplease · 22/12/2022 19:08

Ooo love a yarg with garlic theres a lovely farm shop in the lakes that we go to on holiday that does wonderful cheese!

This year we've just gone for the usual Christmas cheese...

Cheddar with chilli
Wensleydale and cranberry
Wensleydale and apricot
Brie
Blue cheese
Plain cheddar
Baking camembert
Boursin

BuffaloCauliflower · 22/12/2022 19:11

Garlic yarg is one of my absolute faves, if you can get it do. I wish I knew where I could find some nearby (very pregnant and tired so not really in mission mode!)

BuffaloCauliflower · 22/12/2022 19:12

I will get some manchego though which is a definite must as PP said above

BigFatLiar · 22/12/2022 19:13

OH would have edam and gouda though they're both quite bland (in my opinion) but he likes them because they were seen as quite sophisticated when he was younger.

BeringBlue · 22/12/2022 19:15

Our family choice cheeseboard over Christmas (because it changes according to the time of year) is:
Bleu d'Auvergne
Chaumes
Brie
Extra mature cheddar
Gouda
St Moret cream cheese

caringcarer · 22/12/2022 19:18

We have half wheel of stilton
Large mature cheddar
Brie
Yorkshire blue
Dolcelatte
Castillo soft blue
Cheshire
Leicester red
Welsh goats cheese

Lots of assorted crackers

DH is vegetarian and loves his cheese. We are not keen on sweet desserts so have cheeseboard with grapes and crackers instead.

Skidamarinkadinkadink · 22/12/2022 19:29

I’d probably have the following

comte
beaufort
epoisse
reblochon
roquefort
camembert
a goats cheese

Flubadubba · 22/12/2022 19:38

We have a few odd ones to add to the normal including Gjetost (acquired taste!), Maribo (with Caraway), Havarti and a wonderful truffle cheddar. We also have a good brie de meaux, Stilton, manchego, deux de montaigne, cornish cruncher, camembert, Cheshire, edam and a few others that escape me.

Half of the guests we have skip straight to cheese after the main (Christmas pudding is a taste many haven't acquired), hence the large selection!

Also: should probably have mentioned that we have a load of guests coming from Denmark, bringing the Danish cheeses...

Gudbrandsdalen. Amazing stuff!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2022 19:48

Garlic Yarg is delicious.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2022 19:51

I had this in a restaurant recently and it was the nicest blue cheese I've ever tasted (not usually a fan).

VinoEsmeralda · 22/12/2022 19:59

Emmenthaler
Camembert
Beemster
Boursin
Black bomber
Cheddar with whiskey (so good)
Soft goats cheese rolled in Ash
Manchego
Red Leicester
With sourdough crackers, grapes, chutney, chili jam and pickles

VinoEsmeralda · 22/12/2022 20:00

Oh and Stilton, they had ran out of blue monday

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/12/2022 20:01

Something local?

I have a Barncliffe Brie (local), Harrogate Blue (not quite so local), Wensleydale - largely to go with Christmas cake (direct from the creamery, slightly less local again, but still God's Own County), black bomber extra mature cheddar, Stilton (tradition innit)

Cheese is why I am not vegan

Mueslikid · 22/12/2022 20:05

I think we might need to get more than one additional cheese.

Feel more confident about the garlic Yarg now, as nobody has said it is horrible Grin
But the caramelised onion suggestion has won a lot of support with the rest of the family.

I’m enjoying googling all the cheeses I’ve never heard of. Absolutely love the sound of the Danish caraway cheese.

Comte ( french with an accent on the e )

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 22/12/2022 22:18

Comte is so overrated. On MN it’s the only place I hear about this cheese. Bought some from Waitrose and it was not even mediocre at best.
