Can't help feeling Christmas is already ruined by late break up

Anyone else feel the same? DC break up tomorrow lunch time. They generally need a couple of days to recover at the end of time so that's Christmas with exhausted, grouchy and over-excited children. Meaning everyone will be in a bad mood including DH who will be annoyed with their behaviour. Plus we have no time to do nice Christmas stuff like baking or making gifts for the GP's or pottering around town for the day. DD even had 1.5 hours of homework set yesterday to hand in today. The DC are exhausted and only 13 of DD's class were in yesterday, the rest are "ill".

Was just coming on to say this, teachers aren’t the only ones who work 🙄

It does feel sometimes like TEACHERS think they are more hard done by than anyone else, with the way they go on........ and then a gem like THIS pops up...

@CarPoor

I am NHS - and will break up tomorrow after a 60hr week. So yes I know full fucking well what it's like to break up and organise Christmas when you are exhausted. I'm lucky I've got 5 days off this year, but most years I don't. And I work a lot less than many of my colleagues.

🙄

I swear to God, teachers and certain NHS workers think nobody in the world works as hard as them. Gets very tedious it does, and every time they post something about it, they lose a little bit more sympathy! Wink

I mean 'I work 60 hours a week and only got 5 days off this year, and many of my colleagues work a lot more!' is probably one of the most ludicrous things I have read on here for a while to be honest.

This is turning into a competitive tiredness thread. A race to the bottom and a competition for who works the most hours in a week, who works the 'hardest,' and who's the most knackered. Confused

Ours finished last Friday and I would have far preferred a later break up. This week has felt bizarre. Next year they finish on the 22nd I think which I think is the ideal date.

Ours but one up today and I’d of rather they broke up earlier. Off now to the 9th

Thats my point. I don't think I've worked particularly hard. I'm describing a normal working week for an adult.

Plus I was replying to a comment about how no one else understands what it's like to be a teacher when actually the majority of the fucking population understands what it's like to be tired and preparing Christmas.

Read the context before rolling your eyes.

I clearly said Im not moaning this is adult life lots of people work hard with lots of responsibility. I think it's very fucking clear I'm not moaning about how much work I've done

Your picking parts of my post without the whole thing to prove your point, but actually my post was in support of your view which you would have understood if you'd bothered to properly read it.

iluvsummer · 22/12/2022 22:21

We break up tomorrow, it has been a rubbish last few days. The children are absolutely exhausted and are nit picking with each other over the slightest things, they go from teary to manic in a nanosecond, we have exhausted the all fun Christmas stuff we do with them, we’ve done our concerts etc they’ve smashed all their learning this term and they just want to be home getting into the Christmas spirit, I feel so sorry for them! This is my favourite time of year in school and even I have lost the will now.

The teachers are on their knees, over half the staff are ill with this horrible virus that’s going around, everyone just wants to sleep but we’ve got stuff to do! I’ve got 3 kids to pack presents for, a food snipe to do and a house to get Christmas ready and I have zero energy to do it! I so wish we’d broken up yesterday so we could have a few days at home enjoying before Christmas Eve on Saturday.

Willyoujustbequiet · 22/12/2022 22:34

Dc have been sitting their GCSE mocks, last one today 22nd and then break up 23rd. Absolutely ridiculous to force weeks of intensive revision and ruin Christmas. Madness.

Clearly a school where slt don't have any gcse classes. Marking mocks took me around 20 hours, all in. Wouldn't fancy that over Xmas, in a mince pie and bailey's fog.

FatGirlSwim · 22/12/2022 22:40

Does it not give you more time to plan? Yeah you might not get as many days out or activities done before Christmas but you'll have all your shopping and wrapping sorted and you've plenty of time after Christmas to do other stuff

No, because I am occupied running here there and everywhere and managing the end of term party and Carol service and Christmas jumper and four school runs each day (dc on different timetables in different places).

Actually, we are one of the families with the Winter bug now and I’m relieved to be ill because it means school has stopped!

Greeneyegirl · 22/12/2022 22:51

StopStartStop · 22/12/2022 11:52

It's even worse for the teachers. Imagine having to sort Christmas when you're exhausted and have only 36 hours in hand. With the threat of reports needed ready by Jan 3 and other such bullshit. I'm retired but I remember it well.

I work in an office job role, im 37 weeks pregnant, my last day off was when I had 2 weeks annual leave in June. Im exhausted, im stressed with work overload, we are really, really busy with deadlines and i finish at (gasp) 5.30 tomorrow and back in after the boxing day bank holiday. Its normal working life. Im not sure why working 8 weeks in a row means you're more tired than anyone else. Everyones jobs have their own unique stresses and difficulties.^^

amonsteronthehill · 22/12/2022 22:53

Our primary broke up on Wednesday (yesterday). it was truly shit. about 30% of the children were off 'ill' ... many with genuine bugs, must as many off on 'holiday' and/or off because their older siblings were already out of school for the holidays.

And a significant percentage of staff was off because many have caught the awful bugs going around that children keep bringing into school. I lost track of how many we sent home this week within the first hour of their arrival because they were clearly ill with high fevers. Some even confessed they'd been sick the night before but their parents had calpol'd them and sent them in anyway! One parent even sent calpol in with their child to help keep their fever down!

Madness.

Breaking up this late in the month is unfair to everyone: it's ruined christmases for so many with this behaviour.

justasking111 · 22/12/2022 23:02

It's stupid. Some years mine who broke up a week earlier would be ill but recovered by Christmas day. You can't dodge bugs in December.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 22/12/2022 23:03

@amonsteronthehill I do agree that it would have been nice if they could have broken up last Friday 16th, but some parents don't break up til this Friday 23rd, so then you'd have people moaning they've broken up too early, and they don't have anyone to look after them, and they're not allowed holiday leave themselves and so on.........

You can't please all of the people all of the time. Me personally, I prefer to break up later, and then not go back til the 5th or thereabouts. But then I work part time, and have quite a bit of free time. Probably very difficult if you're full time and have kids. I went part time when I came back off maternity when my now adult DD was little, and never went full time again.

ChristmasCwtch · 22/12/2022 23:06

Perhaps skip school tomorrow and have a chilled day at home baking and watching movies and then a fun day out on Christmas Eve. There’s lots of opportunity earlier in December to have festive fun on the weekends. You just need to book everything by September 😂

Maybe you should have done the same as the majority of the class, and said they were 'ill'. Time spent baking / making memories is priceless and they don't do much towards the end of term anyway.

Forever42 · 23/12/2022 00:55

But the holiday duration is the same, regardless of when it starts, so you need the same amount of leave/childcare.

Themisthefacts · 23/12/2022 08:37

I agree it’s shit . I’m in UK and mine finish at 230 today . For me the build up is the fun. It will be harder to keep them entertained up to the 9th January . But it’s the same next year with another late break up. So I will make the most of ur regardless

Computersaysno123 · 23/12/2022 08:41

Mine have been off a week. It's hell! 😂😂

AnaBannanna · 23/12/2022 08:46

No Christmas is not ruined. Some people don't get any time off at all to even spend Christmas with their families.

I'm honestly weeping for the poor teachers. Try working right through Christmas and annual leave is a no go in December and January.

I know it's not a race to the bottom before anyone says so but when I see comments like this I get annoyed because there's people working far worse jobs.

wonderingpondering1 · 23/12/2022 09:57

@hay5689 but why do teachers work right through Christmas, don’t they get the week between Christmas and new year off?

wonderingpondering1 · 23/12/2022 09:58

@hay5689 sorry ignore that, I didn’t get the sarcasm, probably because I’m too tired, ill and trying to work from home with two children here 😂😂😂
