Can't help feeling Christmas is already ruined by late break up

Anyone else feel the same? DC break up tomorrow lunch time. They generally need a couple of days to recover at the end of time so that's Christmas with exhausted, grouchy and over-excited children. Meaning everyone will be in a bad mood including DH who will be annoyed with their behaviour. Plus we have no time to do nice Christmas stuff like baking or making gifts for the GP's or pottering around town for the day. DD even had 1.5 hours of homework set yesterday to hand in today. The DC are exhausted and only 13 of DD's class were in yesterday, the rest are "ill".

It's even worse for the teachers. Imagine having to sort Christmas when you're exhausted and have only 36 hours in hand. With the threat of reports needed ready by Jan 3 and other such bullshit. I'm retired but I remember it well.

All my previous professional jobs have worked on Christmas Eve as standard, why would not finishing until the 23rd be particularly worthy of sympathy? 🤔 Sometimes the office would close at lunchtime as a bonus, and then we'd be back as normal on the 27th.

Findyourneutralspace · 22/12/2022 16:49

Not the kids but me! I’m working till 5pm tomorrow. Then it’s BAM, Christmas Eve.
All my friends have already clocked off but I couldn’t get leave any earlier because it has to be shared fairly.

CakeCrumbs44 · 22/12/2022 16:49

It does seem very late. Ours broke up last Friday (16th) and my daughter was definitely ready for it and would have struggled to do another week. I feel awful for the teachers too, no time to get over the inevitable Christmas holiday cold.

OldTinHat · 22/12/2022 16:50

Really??

Fleabigg · 22/12/2022 16:51

My DD’s last day is today. It’s her first year at school and she’s knackered. I have no doubt she’ll be bouncing around full of energy at 6:30 tomorrow morning after an early bedtime tonight. How tired are they that it’s going to take 2 days to recover?! I’d have preferred to break up a bit earlier but “ruined” is a nonsense.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 22/12/2022 16:55

They broke up Tuesday here. (20th.) Just did Monday and Tuesday, and are back Wednesday 4th January. 'Christmas is ruined by late break up' is a bit dramatic!

ChristmasTidyings · 22/12/2022 17:10

@Blueisthecolour1 been there, done that, now DH and I get the flu jab every year.

I don't quite get all the comparisons to adults and their jobs. They're primary aged kids who are excited about Christmas.

You mean like most adults who work? Lots of jobs don't have the luxury of any time off around Christmas and many have to work Christmas day/boxing day

Was just coming on to say this, teachers aren’t the only ones who work 🙄

StopStartStop · 22/12/2022 18:02

Ha! Try it. Go be a teacher. Then post.

You posted "try sorting out Christmas in 36hrs when you are exhausted" which shows you have a complete lack of knowledge of what most adults have to do.

I am NHS and will break up tomorrow after a 60hr week. So yes I know full fucking well what it's like to break up and organise Christmas when you are exhausted. Im lucky I've got 5 days off this year, but most years I don't. And I work a lot less than many of my colleagues, I'm not moaning, this is just adult life. Both my parents are teachers so I know exactly how hard teachers work, but many people work hard and have a lot of responsibility. Don't spout "try being a teacher" bullshit

This is a thread about children being tired, not a thread about how hard it is being a teacher. And yet within 5 posts there's a thread about how hard it is for teachers. It's ridiculous

Our school six nativity performances for three groups last week. Over the course of the week Mary did one performance went home ill, a third of dancing angels were ill, a few teachers aka/prompters/choreographers went off sick.

Very quiet at school this week . Everyone dead on their feet

GeorgeorRuth · 22/12/2022 19:29

Retail here, we close at 12 on Xmas Eve..

ChristmasTidyings · 22/12/2022 19:45

@GeorgeorRuth how many primary aged children work in your business?

OP posts:
GeorgeorRuth · 22/12/2022 19:49

Judging by the behaviour a few..😉 but parents definitely do, trying to juggle everything with little time..

WiddIytinks · 22/12/2022 20:01

DD is a teacher. The kids finish at 12.30pm tomorrow but the teachers have to stay until 5pm for training.

Yes, like all adults. Presumably your DD is not a child and therefore not relevant to the thread

Wow. Who pissed on your parsnips?

Not sure why talking about when a teacher finishes for Christmas isn't relevant on a thread about when schools finish for Christmas but hey, go off.

(And it's not the same for all adults - DH finished on the 19th, for example).

Merry Christmas!

Half term was 10 weeks ago. My Dc are tired but having spoken to other parents, most are. I don't think it's anything medical. They are absolutely not doing fun stuff this week, they have had tests, projects due in, posters to make. They're still primary children fgs. They will be doing something fun tomorrow morning.

Yes, I much prefer the anticipation and build up but we haven't been able to meet with friends. Yes we can try after Christmas, but it's not the same!

Half term was 8 weeks ago.

It's a thread about children being tired for Christmas. Many adults will finish at 5pm (the standard work finishing time). Many will work christmas. I don't really understand the point of your comment other than an adult finishing work at a normal time before breaking up for christmas

MrsKrankyPants · 22/12/2022 20:50

Ours finish later than lunchtime tomorrow and I'm also working till the end of the day.

ChristmasTidyings · 22/12/2022 20:57

@HandScreen your half term may have finished 8 weeks ago; ours finished 10 weeks ago.

Tomorrow?! The 23rd? That's crazy! I broke up last Friday which I thought was great (my husband broke up a week earlier than me - too early I think). I think schools should break up 21st/22nd at the latest.
