I'm going to do the xmas food shop in person but I've got a slot for tomorrow for all the essentials plus a few extras- lemonades, foil, washing tablets. What have you been putting in your pre xmas essential stock up? Feel like I've forgotten something

Some actual non festive food, I always forget that we need kids lunches and some dinner on the 23rd/27th when there’s not ‘special’ meals to be had.

ice cubes, kitchen roll, bin bags, batteries, butter, cream, tea bags, sugar, condiments

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 19/12/2022 18:48

Extra toilet roll if you have guests

Paracetemol/Ibuprofen

Enough milk to last you over Christmas esp if having visitors

Foil

Bin bags

Foil cooking trays if needed

Kitchen Roll

Paper plates /cups if needed

frillseeking · 19/12/2022 18:55

Just added crisps and crumpets, thank you! Tried to add chocolates but all the tubs are sold out so will look in store. I think I'll stick to buying cream and condiments on the actual xmas shop. Just thought of another thing- orange juice for Buck's Fizz!

I do all my shopping on foot. I've stocked up on various things over the last few weeks, so I can concentrate on fresh food this week.

Things that come to mind are pickles, crisps, baked beans, part baked bread, toilet rolls, foil, wash up liquid, squash, cat food. I've always got plenty, but tea, coffee, painkillers, throat sweets. If your supermarket sells them, a good thing to have if you're seeing family/friends is covid tests.

Oxo01 · 19/12/2022 21:35

Pet food if applicable

Sodullincomparison · 19/12/2022 22:11

My shop came today and not so much for the £££s spent.

and so many short dates which is annoying.

the things I bought but didn’t have on my want list are
Binbags, variety cereal packs, cream, butter etc

I bought so many crackers 🤦‍♀️ Of every type.

pizzaHeart · 19/12/2022 22:19

My list (written from bitter experience): foil, cling film, bin bags, sugar, flour, eggs, baking powder, unsalted butter, quick yeast, bread flour, porridge oats, baked beans, mayonnaise, olive oil, sea salt (I can’t live without it), batteries, cellotape, washing up liquid, washing powder, tea, coffee, paracetamol, tampons, kitchen towels, toilet paper, Dettol spray, soap, pasta, pack of cheddar, jar of strawberry or apricot jam, lemons, apples, green bananas, DD’s usual cough and cold medicines.

I also make sure we have pack of petit pois, chips, and a few fish portions in the freezer.
We were unwell quite a few times over Christmas and having basics in stock was very helpful, not having some of them (e.g my tea) was a real pain in the arse.

FancyFanny · 19/12/2022 23:14

Washing up liquid, rubber gloves, oven cleaner, foil, lemons, ice, tea lights, eggs, cling film, plain flour, cat food, gravy granules, cornflour, kitchen roll, fish fingers, chips, peas, chutney, baked beans, pasta and sauce, washing detergent, bleach, cloths, hand wash, bin liners, gas lighter for candles ...and the list goes on!!!!!!!!!!

spiderontheceiling · 19/12/2022 23:26

I always get some of those floor wipes & surface wipes so that if anything is spilled it can be quickly dealt with, including by the family member or guest who happens to be closest to the drawer where they are kept.
What about condiments, particularly if you have family members or guests who like different ones to the ones you usually have in.
Mixers for drinks? And soft drinks in general?
We have 10 people staying for 4 days. I know my fridge can't hold enough food for that and, even if I could go to the supermarket on 27th, I won't want to, so today's order not only had the general cupboard stuff in it but also the stuff that I will freeze to eat on 26th & 27th. Sausages, bacon, bread and so on.

spiderontheceiling · 19/12/2022 23:28

I also got another ice cube tray as we'll get through a lot of ice.

TeaMistress · 19/12/2022 23:53

Paracetamol / ibuprofen
Antacid medication / Gaviscon
Anti diarrhoea medication
Cold/flu / decongestant medication
Vicks vapo rub
Throat lozenges
Rehydration sachets

I normally try to make sure that as part of the Christmas shop I restock all of the winter medication we might need and anything for pain relief / tummy upsets /cough or cold etc. I also make sure I order and collect any repeat prescriptions ( I am a carer for a disabled immuno compromised relative and want to make sure that we have essentials in stock in case they become unwell over Christmas )

Kitchen foil / clingfilm
Kitchen roll
Toilet roll
Cat food and litter
Washing up liquid and disinfectant
Bin bags
Washing powder and dishwasher tablets

Eggs
Porridge oats
Baking powder / bicarb
Spices
Cheese and crackers
Nuts
Part baked baguettes / croissants
Fresh bread
Milk
Coffee / Tea
Sugar or sweetener
Butter / spread ( and any extra butter I need for baking over the Christmas period)
Cream / Creme fraiche
Flour
Condiments
Vegetables and fruit ( both for meals and for juicing / smoothies so if my relative is struggling to eat then I can tempt them with a fresh smoothie which is full of nutrition)
Squash and mixers like Appletiser / Lemonade etc
Tinned beans
Jam / marmite etc

Blossomtoes · 20/12/2022 00:26
