Does anyone not 'do' stockings?

I'm wondering if I'm the strange one but we've never done stockings? No one I know does them either? Presents get wrapped and put under the tree. I didn't have them as a kid and my parents didn't either. We call the cheaper bits you buy stocking fillers but don't actually put them in a stocking. Am I doing Christmas wrong? 🤣

Never had stockings as a kid. I started them when my kids were small, eldest was probably 6 or 7 and youngest 3 ish.

Nothing expensive goes in them. Chocolate, small gift or lego poly bag. They're just the starter for the big event downstairs.

emmathedilemma · 19/12/2022 20:36

I’ve never had one either

Sonyo · 19/12/2022 20:40

I never had them and neither did my parents, but I've started with my DC. I just love finding little bits to fill the stocking with. No plastic tat either so everything I pick out will last long and hopefully be played with.

DumpedByText · 19/12/2022 20:43

I'm not doing them this year, can't be arsed and I'm not buying anymore, I've spent enough!

tilder · 19/12/2022 20:55

Christmas traditions vary so much. But I'm surprised how many people don't.

We had stockings as children. Loved waking up to feel the weight on your feet. I had one until dc1 was born. Dc all have a stocking. I love shopping for it through the year. Small things, art stuff. Socks. Toiletries. Chocolate. Always a chocolate orange. Family presents under the tree.

I do a stocking on 6th December (St. Nikolaus). Christmas day presents are just under the tree. But then I don't really "do" Father Christmas/Santa Claus either.

We had this tradition when I grew up except hereabouts you'd use your actual boots instead of stockings. Left at the bedroom door the night before.

Justhereforaibu1 · 19/12/2022 21:02

We've started doing a Xmas eve box which has stocking type things in, sweets, chocs, bath bombs etc

Mummymidwife33 · 19/12/2022 21:07

We do a sack with presents in and in amongst that are usually a selection box, choc coins etc. my kids have loved putting out their sack on Christmas Eve (always downstairs). I also put presents from grandparents in there.
Mine have also been told that we buy the presents and Father Christmas decides which ones they get based on their behaviour and then delivers them.

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 19/12/2022 21:12

I never had one as a child but it's a tradition I started for nine, I bought them a lovely felt embroidered one when pregnant with each of them.

Stockings have always held their Christmas tshirt and a few little, inexpensive things to keep them amused until everyone's up and ready to sit around the tree. These days it's almost entirely snack foods and sweets; I hunt out unusual things we don't usually see in the shops.

The other day my 17yo told me it's his absolute favourite thing about Christmas.

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 19/12/2022 21:15

*mine not nine!

I should add, the stockings were always from 'Santa', credit for whatever is under the tree is given to whoever really bought it! This made the transition away from believing in Santa a lot easier.

There’s no right or wrong. We don’t have them but no kids in family. We’d all rather have big / decent presents

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/12/2022 21:41

I did and we do, but it’s just little stocking filters - satsumas, chocolate orange, socks , thank you cards (! Fr C is big on manners), a book and a few fun usable things.

Anything big goes under the tree.

I really liked the feeling of waking up with a stocking on my feet. But the best thing is leaving out stuff beer and a mince pie and carrots for the reindeer bf you go to bed.

My parents didn’t do this, but as they go to bed one of us also rings some bells. Realising the sleigh is on it’s way is VERY EXCITING.

Walnutwhipsarenothesame · 19/12/2022 21:41

I don’t usually do them but I am this year.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/12/2022 21:44

… I don’t think there’s a right or wrong, but I have to say I thought stockings were as ubiquitous as Christmas trees. You learn new stuff on here..

NoNameNowAgain · 19/12/2022 22:34

I’m quite surprised how many people do presents round the tree. I thought that was mostly a continental thing.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 19/12/2022 22:57

We always had them growing up it’s one of my favourite things about Christmas. As we got older before we all branched out and had our own families my siblings and I would all take turns in doing each others stockings. Now DH does mine, I do his and the DC as I absolutely love it.

MrsBungle · 19/12/2022 23:10

I loved my stocking growing up. As others have said, feeling that weight on my toes as soon as I opened my eyes was magical. I’ve carried that on for my children.

Question for any of you who DC wake/would wake if you were in their room with stockings, how do you deal with the tooth fairy?

My oldest REFUSED to believe in Fairies and though the tooth fairy was utter BS and no one could convince him otherwise so no issue... instead he choose to collect them in a pot.

My younger 2 havent lost any teeth yet so dont know.

We do it with a boot by the door but you can fit very little in a 1 year olds boot and compaired to a teen sibling with massive feet its very jarring size difference so I wish I had used stockings instead lol.

Everyone I know from being a child does sacks, pillowcases or stockings. You are unique.

No she is not, its entirely common not to have them.

People just assume everyone does xmas their way, these threads prove thats not true, theres more to the world that our own experiance.

CatJumperTwat · 20/12/2022 09:37

We never had them as children. I still don't really understand them.

PinkHeadphones · 20/12/2022 09:41

We always had them as a child, the presents under the tree were from family. We do the same with the kids now. I also found the stocking the most magical and exciting thing about Christmas.

Not common, not even on mumsnet that has some very weird notions at times. You leave something out for father Christmas to fill with toys. I'm older now and no one I know who celebrates Christmas in the uk hasnt had some sort of receptacle for father Christmas to put their presents in, and I've moved around the country quite a bit.

TokyoSushi · 20/12/2022 10:56

No stockings here either, just one pile downstairs. The pile certainly consists of stocking type presents as well as the big ones though.

Floralnomad · 20/12/2022 10:57

We’ve never done stockings , we have piles downstairs even when the kids were little ( they are now adult ) . We would put presents under the tree but the dog can’t read so would unwrap them all not just his own .
