Just planning for the week ahead, and thinking i might go mid week and get everything to avoid the masses, when is everyone going for their fresh stuff?

Been to Tesco today and got pretty much everything. Only fresh veg I use are sprouts carrots and spuds so they'll be fine by Sunday. Everything else is already here as I've been picking it up every shop for a few weeks

ApolloandDaphne · 18/12/2022 18:31

I will go on Wednesday. That gives me time to pick up bits and pieces after that if needed. I don't expect our supermarket to be busy.

SpentDandelion · 18/12/2022 18:31

I always do mine on xmas eve, l can always get what l want and it's quieter. The supermarket near me reopens on boxing day. I can't stand having mountains of food everywhere and l am short on space.

brusselspout · 18/12/2022 18:33

I've moved house and now have a Tesco in walking distance which is filling me with joy because I realised the thing I hate the most about Xmas shopping is fighting for a parking space 😩
Going to bring DS and walk it home instead !

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/12/2022 18:35

I've got a Tesco order on the 21st. Would have preferred the 22nd, but couldn't get it.

Will buy veg from the Greengrocers on Friday morning.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/12/2022 18:37

Thursday, I’ll be in the car park ready for opening time.

bizzywiththefizzy · 18/12/2022 18:38

Usually get fresh foods on 23rd , got everything else .

KittytheHare · 18/12/2022 18:39

onsiemumsie · 18/12/2022 17:44

23rd.

I totted up that all the trimmings, gravy, sauces and pudding etc. come to £20... but the turkey is £30 for a nice-ish one from M&S. Literally more than everything else! Very tempted to just buy a chicken.

Isn't it always the case that the main protein part costs more than everything else? It's hardly surprising that veg etc cost less in total.

NatalieIsFreezing · 18/12/2022 18:41

Many a year I've queued up at opening time on the 23rd with loads of other people.

One year I left my wallet behind so went back mid afternoon and it was practically empty of people, stuff that'd been nearly gone in the morning was being restocked onto full shelves... so I'm risking just going on the afternoon of the 23rd... Might bottle it, though!

NatalieIsFreezing · 18/12/2022 18:44

I've got my bird on order and more turkey breast in the freezer, so that's hopefully not to worry about. Just a trolley full of pigs in blankets to prioritise...

bloodywhitecat · 18/12/2022 18:55

NewBlueShoe · 18/12/2022 18:18

@bloodywhitecat I have a child in a wheelchair and use the SEN trolleys at the supermarket - basically a much bigger seat with proper straps for big children - upto 50 kg I believe. You might have to search around to find them (or ask someone) because they aren't always with the regular trolleys.

It's on order at our Morrisons but won't be here before Christmas, their last one got broken somehow and is out of action. How supportive are they as this little one has next to no trunk/head control?

@stopringingme Just registered and Ocado don't deliver in our area sadly but thank you for the heads up.

Ocado

CosyScentedCandles · 18/12/2022 18:56

I have a delivery slot tomorrow for the stuff to make my desserts ahead of time, a delivery slot on Friday for the other fresh stuff and also picking up meat from the butchers on Friday as well.

Glitterandcard · 18/12/2022 19:07

Friday, late evening. But I already have our Christmas meal in the freezer and it doesn’t require fresh veg etc (not a roast) so all I’m buying at that point is our ordinary food shop. Whatever they don’t have that’s urgent I’ll get from the Tesco express at the end of the road.

stopringingme · 18/12/2022 19:09

@bloodywhitecat

Shame about Ocado not delivering to your area

Another thought if you have an Aldi or Tesco near by they might do click and collect, that means you don't have to get the little one out of the car, you just order online and text when you get there and they bring the shopping to the car.

NewBlueShoe · 18/12/2022 19:15

@bloodywhitecat oh no actually, they aren't very supportive really. Have you heard of a firefly seat - will try to find a link, you might be able to apply for funding for one and it would go inside the trolley (or restaurant/cinema seat etc) to offer extra support.

NewBlueShoe · 18/12/2022 19:17

Amazing! Thank you so much, that would work a treat.

Roominmyhouse · 18/12/2022 19:20

I’ve got a Sainsbury’s delivery coming Friday afternoon. I’ll know in the morning what is missing and have a half day Friday so can just pop out and grab anything important. Last year I didn’t really have anything missing so fingers crossed I’m as lucky this year!

onsiemumsie · 18/12/2022 19:28

Isn't it always the case that the main protein part costs more than everything else? It's hardly surprising that veg etc cost less in total.

@KittytheHare yes that's true, but I guess the ratios feel out of kilter, the veg etc. is around the normal price I'd pay, but I wouldn't normally pay £30 just for the meat for my Sunday Roast.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 18/12/2022 19:34

I have a tesco click and collect booked for 23rd. I never leave it this late and usually have the vast bulk of food frozen by november but limited freezer space this year has meant I'm gambling on fresh items and worried about it all being out of stock.

We do have an Asda, smaller Tesco, 2 lidl's and an aldi within a few minutes of us though so hopefully anything not available we can buy elsewhere.

caringcarer · 18/12/2022 19:43

I'm going to adult dsons for Xmas day and I am taking him turkey crown and a beef. I will get these early on morning of 23rd. I am going to MiL for Boxing Day this year. She is doing a buffet. I have a lot of Xmas stuff I have bought in advance for home but I am roasting turkey at home on 28th. Will get fresh turkey crown and a beef on 23rd and sausage meat and stash in freezer will have to take out large ham to fit it in, but am cooking that on evening of 23rd. I have to fit around 2 adult DC going to their Dads on 27th and coming to me on 28th. Hoping their Dad will not be cooking turkey, he often cooks lamb so hoping this the case on 27th. DH will pop to shops on morning of 27th for fresh veg, cream and a couple of desserts. I am cooking roast beef and salmon New Years Day.

TeenDivided · 18/12/2022 19:47

Anything that can be bought already is bought.
Milk, cream and veg and other fresh bits will be bought 8am Fri.
Turkey collected 8am Sat, usually back in car by 8.10.

colette1970 · 18/12/2022 20:36

Going Friday for fresh stuff got everything else ,autistic son having a delivery of kebab meat from favourite take away on xmas eve just reheat xmas day , he doesn’t eat xmas dinner so pick my battles at least he will sit at table and eat with the rest of us.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2022 20:54

I'm at work Mon-Thurs so mine will be Friday for the vegetables and any last minute items .

I was on the ball this time , parsnips and turnip is pre-cooked and in the freezer . I need Maris Pipers /King Edwards .

DD & I use soya milk which has a good shelf life and I have a bread maker so that's covered

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 18/12/2022 21:11

DH and I are both off Wednesday (NHS) so going to brave it then. He can pop out Christmas Eve for any bits we've missed. I bought all the meat in the market on Friday so at least that is sorted and in the freezer.
