Missed Royal Mail's last posting date 1st class: WWYD?

For various reasons, we haven't posted our cards yet or even written them and the last recommended date has gone.
It would take three hours or so but we don't have time tonight for the 9am collection anyway so the next collection would be Tuesday 9am. We have the 1st class stamps.

Would you take a risk and post them tomorrow or would you email an image instead?

I didn’t post cards last year, my mum was very ill and I got very stressed, ran out of time so decided not to put pressure on myself and none got sent. This year, I thought about writing some but felt that I was only sending them out of habit and I’m not going to do it anymore. I’ve had less cards posted to me this year which is good as I don’t display them anyway and I hope my friends and family are also cutting back. I’ve not even written them for local friends and explained that I am no longer sending them but will be making a donation to charity instead. Again, it seems a number of friends have also stopped.

I really think that sending cards will cease to be a tradition for many people and for me that’s a good thing. If it’s something you do not enjoy, then stop!

I'm where you were last year, mum been ill since November - very stressed, just keeping head above water with work/life. I've abandoned it and I think it may set the standard from now on.

Tayegete · 18/12/2022 20:24

I’m sending mine on Monday. I did a first batch last week, but ran out of cards and we’ve all been ill this week so I’ve only just got round to it. They will get there eventually. I send to older relatives, taking up the mantle from my mum now my parents have gone.

Schoolchoicesucks · 18/12/2022 20:25

Post them anyway. They may get there on time. If they're a bit late, then most people keep their cards up into January anyway.

ShandaLear · 18/12/2022 20:29

I haven’t sent cards for about 8 years. They’re waning in popularity, are terrible for the environment, and cost more to post than they’re actually worth. Does anyone you’re sending a card to actually need one?

magicthree · 18/12/2022 20:33

I agree, just post them. I get most of my cards from overseas, and they often don't arrive until after Christmas - it's still nice to receive them.

skyeisthelimit · 18/12/2022 20:33

I would just post them now and they get there when they get there. Maybe cut back on the number and send an email to everyone else, or do a FB post or whatever.

I stopped sending cards about 10 years ago now and I only send one that goes to Scotland, we talk by email anyway so not too worried when it gets there.

LBFseBrom · 18/12/2022 20:45

I'd post and hope for the best. Royal Mail usually pull out all the stops to get things to people on time but even without any strikes, there is often the odd card that arrives late. Nobody minds and it's better to make the effort than not.

grapestar · 18/12/2022 20:54

Do people still send Christmas cards? I must have been living under a rock

RudsyFarmer · 18/12/2022 20:56

I was told the second class date was tomorrow!

40goingon30 · 18/12/2022 21:04

Send them and risk it, the post is all over the place..
I have sent first class on 3rd to a few people and they are still not there but then I sent some on 12th and they got there the next day!!
They are on strike Friday and Saturday so they still have the 3 days to arrive, if not people will understand with the strikes.

I was told the second class date was tomorrow!

That was last Monday!

LIZS · 18/12/2022 21:08

They brought last recommended dates forward to allow for strike days.

Pmsl the bloke in the post office was way off! Well mine are going out tomorrow abd I guess they’ll arrive when they arrive.

Margo34 · 18/12/2022 22:16

Post them anyway. Or save them for next year! Are the stamps the new ones, with the barcodes? They'll keep too.

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 18/12/2022 23:09

🎵On the fourth day of Christmas my postman delivered to me.... all the Christmas cards that missed the deadline.

Christmas only starts on Christmas day. I'd still be pleased to receive a card any time between Christmas and New Year.

I've also missed the deadline OP and am planning to stick the cards in the postbox whenever I can manager to.

NiceViper · 18/12/2022 23:24

I would send anyhow.

Sometimes cards posted on time arrive late, sometimes those posted late just fly through and arrive on time.

As long as they're there before the end of Christmas on Twelfth Night, it's worth it

Wauden · 18/12/2022 23:38

Seems like we are not the only ones! 🤓 I think that we should write them tomorrow and post them, hopefully in a post office that collects in the afternoon, rather in for the next local post box where collection won't be until Tuesday 9am.
Its a good point that Christmas ends at Epiphany. 🎅
Also, I could blame any lateness on the backlog. ⏲

BirdyWoof · 19/12/2022 00:42

All guarantees are suspended due to the strikes.

There is a high chance they wouldn’t have been delivered. I’d just post them anyway and blame it on that.

Topseyt123 · 19/12/2022 00:53

I wouldn't bother with them at all, but then I gave up sending Christmas cards some years ago and have not missed them at all. In fact, it has been very liberating.

I think it is a slowly dying tradition. I wonder if the postal strikes this year might finally knock it on the head for many.

comfyshoes2022 · 19/12/2022 01:09

fedupofthiscoldffs · 18/12/2022 17:32

I wouldn't bother posting them now. There's no point in getting cards this late anyway. People like them up for a few weeks leading up to Xmas (well I do anyway)
People won't be expecting them anymore

I don’t feel this way at all. I keep them up until January 6th, and I’m happy to receive a seasonal greeting at any time.

good96 · 19/12/2022 01:10

It’s the risk you take. Personally, I really wouldn’t bother and I certainly would not send cards with cash in right now via RM.
The backlog that RM will have to process, I really doubt that they will clear through the backlog in 6 days. You could send an e-card via email if you really wanted to. Failing that, send a message. I know some people prefer sending/receiving a card but it just isn’t practical this year.
Also, the cost of actual cards and stamps have increased drastically- soon it will be that no one sends cards…

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 19/12/2022 02:04

I love sending Christmas cards. It’s one of the things that gets me into the Christmas spirit, I sit down a weekend late in November with a film, and happily wrote them all - usually around 30-40.

have done for years and years. I know it’s not about sending to receive, but I do always get a bit hurt each year when friends ring me and say how lovely it was to receive a card, “so nice to get something through the post” but then never reciprocate. Ah well. I do it because I think it’s lovely to get post. But would be nice if sometimes people sent them back!

ChristmasCwtch · 19/12/2022 03:17

I posted my cards third week of November. We’ve had 4 in return through the post!! So that’s the end of that tradition. I couldn’t believe it cost 95p per stamp!! I’m only going to send cards to those 4 next year (older relatives).

I’d prefer a text to an email. I get endless corporate e-cards and they’re a bit pointless, like automated junk mail.

Ponderingwindow · 19/12/2022 03:51

I always receive a few cards late. Never really thought much of it.

just send them when they are ready.
