My geeky 15yr DS and the weirdest Christmas list ever

My son has asked for: headphones (standard), dried mango, dried banana chips, microfibre cloths to clean his glasses with, and one of those blue BIC pens that have the four coloured nibs to make notes in his classes 🤣🤣🤣 he's also added refills for his pilot BtP pens (a very specific request).

I have bought the usual slippers, a (Primark) oodie, pringles etc.

He has significantly less to open than his younger sisters.

I'm thinking of ordering Pi: A Comedy of Maths Errors amzn.eu/d/9NJkl9U THIS BOOK (he loves maths and coding so seems right up his street) but would love any ideas of (hopefully useful) bits and pieces he can open. He's asked for so little and says he is really lucky because he doesn't need anything🤷🏻‍♀️

He does not care about branded clothes, does not care about his hair etc, so things like aftershave and sporty t-shirts/joggers are out.

That doesn't look like a weird list to me.
Why does he need anything else?

StrawberryWater · 17/12/2022 21:08

Is he into computers? If so how about a Raspberry Pi?

FuckingHateRats · 17/12/2022 21:10

It's dreadful but I just feel like I need to even it up a little. The girls seem to have more 'stuff' - art supplies, hair and skin bits and bobs. Also I don't have many stocking fillers for him - the girls are dead easy because lip balms, face masks, hair bobbles and bath bombs quickly add up. He doesn't have anything equivalent.

Yes he is. This is something I'm definitely going to investigate! Thank you

Ooh I saw that book the other day and hoping someone buys it for me!

Moon22 · 17/12/2022 21:16

This would be a biggish present... and maybe weird, but if he loves dried fruit bits, would he enjoy a dehydrator?? I saw smaller, affordable ones on one of the shopping chanel websites!!

Dacadactyl · 17/12/2022 21:17

I'd get him a Rubik's cube too

LubaLuca · 17/12/2022 21:18

Does he have a Rubik's cube?
Is he into computing at all?

LubaLuca · 17/12/2022 21:18

Great minds on the Rubik's cube!

LubaLuca · 17/12/2022 21:21

A subscription to Computer Active magazine might be useful. It's light enough for youngsters.

Indeed!

I have a 9 year old like this. I know, much younger than yours, but the same vibe.

He is getting some robot coding kits (build the robot and code it for the moves it can do).
He is also super into Dungeons and Dragons. We play as a family so I'm getting him some more campaign books, monster cards etc. Would your son enjoy tabletop or roleplay gaming?

TerrysNeapolitan · 17/12/2022 21:25

He sounds cool to me! I'm loving the Old Skool Pen (I'm 50!)

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 17/12/2022 21:29

He sounds like a well adjusted intelligent kid- Be grateful he’s not one of those horrors demanding a PlayStation and a Gucci man bag.

WarningToTheCurious · 17/12/2022 21:30

The GCHQ puzzle books might also fit the bill.

My DS also has The Pen.

GertrudeBell · 17/12/2022 21:31

How about some strategy board games (as opposed to silly party games)? They often appeal to a logical, mathsy mind.

I can give a steer if I know what theme would closely align with his interests (eg dungeons and dragons / space / nature / historical stuff) and who/ how many he’d be playing against.

carefulcalculator · 17/12/2022 21:31

That's a great list Smile

I agree with Raspberry Pi, you can get him some python books.

Cuppasoupmonster · 17/12/2022 21:33

He sounds like a great, quirky, self assured kid to me! I was also thinking the GCHQ puzzle books.

FuckingHateRats · 17/12/2022 21:33

He loves computing and astrophysics. He is torn between a career in software engineering or aerospace engineering. He is a super cool and fantastic kid 😍 just not the easiest to buy for...

DD is 15 and a total geek. She has a list of 167 books she wants from Euripides to Modern feminism.

I've asked if she wants anything else and she's asked for a bow tie, some revision flash cards and some pritt stick.

I feel your pain!

PutYourBackIntoit · 17/12/2022 21:37

Two websites that I've found useful for a similar boy :)

en.escapewelt.com

www.presentindicative.com

kagerou · 17/12/2022 21:38

He sounds great! If he's into coding and you know the languages he's already learnt maybe he would enjoy some books to learn a new one and enhance his tech stack or if you're feeling flush then maybe an online course

She sounds like a fantastic kid. Long may the love of reading continue!

I teach English and one of my students is writing a dissertation centres around a feminist reading of Euripides - I couldn't love it more.

I'd guess that book might be a bit young for him? Maybe something by Feynman or perhaps A Brief History of time?
