My son has asked for: headphones (standard), dried mango, dried banana chips, microfibre cloths to clean his glasses with, and one of those blue BIC pens that have the four coloured nibs to make notes in his classes 🤣🤣🤣 he's also added refills for his pilot BtP pens (a very specific request).

I have bought the usual slippers, a (Primark) oodie, pringles etc.

He has significantly less to open than his younger sisters.

I'm thinking of ordering Pi: A Comedy of Maths Errors amzn.eu/d/9NJkl9U THIS BOOK (he loves maths and coding so seems right up his street) but would love any ideas of (hopefully useful) bits and pieces he can open. He's asked for so little and says he is really lucky because he doesn't need anything🤷🏻‍♀️

He does not care about branded clothes, does not care about his hair etc, so things like aftershave and sporty t-shirts/joggers are out.

Another vote for books by Asimov. iRobot is a good one to start with. Also Displates, although a voucher might be best as there is a lot of choice and tastes can be quite specific

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 18/12/2022 00:38

Maybe a bit big for a sticking filler, but what about a telescope?

DeathBy1000PipeCleaners · 18/12/2022 00:45

www.gyroscope.com/ has some fantastic present ideas, and delivery is quick. Thank you for starting this thread: it's full of great suggestions from everyone!

Yes he is. This is something I'm definitely going to investigate! Thank you

A similar option is an Arduino, which has more add-ons. It interacts more easily with physical things you can make/measure. You can make a remote control car for example with sensors.

Energypanic · 18/12/2022 00:57

If he is interested in the history of computers then "Ghost in the Wires" might be an interesting book for him. It's the life story of a famous hacker. I got it when I was not that much older than him and found it really cool and funny.

One of my treasured presents is a bullet space pen, bit more pricey but very nice to have www.fisherspacepen.co.uk/product-category/pens/

raspberrytinsel · 18/12/2022 01:14

what age is he, I did reread the thread but can't see it - guessing about 14? God love him, my son is similar in not asking for much, you are lucky!. How about Airfix models? All the rage in the 80's!!

Needmorelego · 18/12/2022 01:22

@SleepingStandingUp the OP said she has also got him an Oodie, some slippers and pringles.
I would say headphones and an Oodie could be classed as 'main' presents.
The rest as stocking gifts.
Does he need much more? I would maybe add a book, few more snacks and some toiletries but I don't think he needs another 'main' present.

Barleysugar86 · 18/12/2022 01:24

Please read the amazon preview before buying... I wanted to gift this book too but I found the preview really uninspiring and flat.

Freakonomics books are so much better if he's not read them!

LetUsPonce · 18/12/2022 03:16

A Turing Tumble.

The first few puzzles will be too simple for him but they soon get quite tricky.

This message will probably get lost in the five or more pages now, but I read a review of a book today that really piqued my interest. It's called (I think) bad data. It's written by a house of commons statistician and talks about how and why politicians can use reported true, and seemingly contradictory data.

I'm not real y into maths, but I'm fascinated by data sets. Maybe that would interest your son?

MistletoeandBaileys · 18/12/2022 05:31

I have to say as a glasses wearer myself Microfibre cloths are a God send for cleaning them! They shine them up like nothing else! So I completely agree with that too!

Is he into any shows OP? I mean if there was merch from a show he loved that could be a good shout? (I’m 29 and I know for sure there will be something Harry Potter related for me Christmas Day! Either another cup/ book marks/ pyjamas)

raspberrytinsel · 18/12/2022 07:09

@user1471453601 it won't get lost, have bookmarked it all for my own off the beat man, who would love this suggestion

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 18/12/2022 07:18

If he like science fiction with actual science - Asimov novels?

Sorry, had not RTFT and realise it's been said!

Was going to suggest a rasperry Pi. There's a huge shortage of them atm. But CEX have refurb ones for delivery. Accessories available from the pi hut. Including starter manuals and stuff.

Even my 42yo DH has expressed interest in a raspberry Pi for christmas (to set up some kind of weird smart home hub system or something). So for all ages.

DappledThings · 17/12/2022 22:08

What pain? Your daughter has given you a list of 171 things she'd like. She sounds like the easiest person in the world to buy for. I don't get it. This isn't snark. I really don't understand what is in any way difficult about someone providing such a list. Is it because it is nearly all books?

It's tongue in cheek @DappledThings

She's brilliant and very easy to buy for.

FuckingHateRats · 17/12/2022 21:33

He loves computing and astrophysics. He is torn between a career in software engineering or aerospace engineering. He is a super cool and fantastic kid 😍 just not the easiest to buy for...

But he is easy to buy for. He has told you what he wants and how happy he is that it's all he needs. It's you who has the problem here. Love is not about stuff. Take this lesson from your beautiful boy.

JanBabiesBrummyMummy · 18/12/2022 08:29

I have ordered one of these for my similar son

She sounds like a fantastic kid. Long may the love of reading continue!

I teach English and one of my students is writing a dissertation centres around a feminist reading of Euripides - I couldn't love it more.

I teach English as well 😊

Christmas shopping is usually just time spent in book shops. Sometimes, we top up the presents with art supplies to keep it interesting. Oh and a Kermit puppet because that appeared randomly on the list last year. DD plans to read Classics for her degree.

Your DS sounds a lot like DD's best friends. They're all boys and similarly geeky. They play Dungeons and Dragons regularly and as well as traditional games like Chess and Scrabble, really like obscure board games. On Thursday, they're getting together to do a Physics challenge set by their Physics teacher. They're a lovely bunch.

GertrudeBell · 18/12/2022 08:45

If he loves The Martian (good taste!) then the perfect board game for him is Terraforming Mars which is complex, thinky and extremely highly rated.

Tiredalwaystired · 18/12/2022 08:54

Your sons list is great! I love the idea of getting him his own dehydrator.

my daughter has asked for a breakfast cereal dispenser for Christmas.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/12/2022 08:55

A 3D pen kit?
