This could have been an "AIBU to ask but what did you forget last year". However. AIBU scares me and this board is lovely.
Last year I forgot foil and bin bags so not really food but should have been on my Asda shop. I also forgot bread and didn't get enough butter.

What did you forget ? Help me before my Asda shop has only Prosecco on it!!

I never forget anything but only because i make the most ridiculously detailed list you have ever seen. I write down every meal we will have over the period including breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks. Then i go through the recipe/prep for every meal and transfer all i need onto a list. This has worked for me over many years of hosting Christmas! I started my list for this year this morning.

You should market ‘The List’!!!

You hero's. You've saved Christmas.

Thank you OP and the people who mentioned cream, tin foil and bin bags - we ran out of food bin bags today and I don't fancy Christmas dinner scrapings going straight into the revolting little caddy for a week!

My essentials are:

Christmas Eve
veggie sausage rolls
fresh bread rolls
Quorn ham and turkey (or meat equivalents if any carnivores)
all the cheese
nice crackers for the cheese
kids have asked for Quorn scotch eggs
Garners pickled onions, shallots and red cabbage
red onion chutney
Stokes chilli jam
some salad - just baby leaves, cucumber, celery, vine tomatoes
all the crisps
mince pies and cream
Yule log and Christmas cake

Christmas Day
Croissants and other pastries for breakfast
Granola and yoghurt plus blueberries and bananas

Potatoes for roasting and making dauphinoisse
gouda, cream and garlic for the dauphs
parsnips for roasting
Yorkshire pudding (and anybody who thinks it doesn't belong is wrong)
Kids have asked for Quorn roast
little veggie sausages
stuffing - I put nuts and fried onions/mushrooms in it to make it a bit more interesting
sprouts and carrots
I never make red cabbage, but I might buy a ready made one
gravy
Christmas pudding and brandy sauce

Christmas Day tea is usually just a sandwich or cheese and crackers

Boxing Day is usually a late cooked breakfast (veggie) and then more cheese for tea

After that it's usually back to normal - I usually crave a curry by then!

Oh and this year we're doing a 'Hot chocolate station' on Christmas Eve - hot choc, oat milk, marshmallows, little ginger men, chocolate balls, squirt cream etc

A box of little oranges
Matches for candles

I have a list I use every year . You could laminate it and use pen designed for it .
Most people buy the same things year in and out .

Sea salt.
Cornflour.
Gaviscon.
Camomile tea for upset tum.
Long life milk - just in case.
Foil.
Washing upliquid.
dish scrubbers - need new ones for roasting dishes
J-cloths.
Black plastic bags.
Kitchen towel.
Plasters.
Parsley to fine chop into anything on a plate.
Lemon & lime.
Garlic/ginger/lemongrass/star anise to pimp leftovers.
Tin of pineapple kept in fridge - instant palate cleanser.
white basmati rice for leftovers a la kedge/risotto/curry.
Tins of baked beans or soup for when no-one can be arsed to cook or shop.

Cooks Treat - THE favourite bikkie/cake/tipple/chocolate to keep the momentum going & give instant reward for all the bloody hard work to make Christmas appear effortless. Mine is a good Italian panettone for me only, I have a wodge with a stiff coffee for my festive breakfasts.

This is a very good list. Any more list shares welcome. 🙏

Chutney
Condiments
Stuffing
Gravy granules
Booze
Extra cream
Cereal
Extra bread
Freezer bags
Kitchen roll
Ready to roll pastry
Onions
Extra butter
Extra milk
Biscuits
Smoked salmon

UniversalAunt · 17/12/2022 13:21

Yes to ready roll pastry in the fridge/freezer - knock up a leftovers pie or jam/mincemeat/cheese/Nutella twists.

Jus-ro(?) has an everyday go-to gluten free pastry that is not worth rolling out but makes great twists & pie top. If you have GF guests, it’s a treat to have a scoffable pie that is 100% GF.

Instant potato powder for extending mash/thickening sauces - allegedly a cheffy hack, not tried it yet.

Bird’s custard powder - covers multitudes of errors & brings bananas up a few notches.

Long matches or gas lighters , after teen had squirreled them up to her bedroom and used them all up .🙄
