As per usual it's 2 weeks until Christmas and the only person with no gifts is my FIL! He is 76, doesn't read, doesn't go out, doesn't have any interests apart from his car which he cares for intimately, doesn't drink. Buys everything he ever needs for himself but will be desperately disappointed if he has nothing to open on the day. A usual I am stumped can anyone magic up any ideas please.

A winter essentials car care gift set?

AluckyEllie · 13/12/2022 14:51

My dad is 72. Needs nothing and active and self-sufficient, but likes to oo and aaah over opening prezzies with grandchildren. So I’ve got him:

thermal Heat Holders fingerless gloves
thermal Heat Holders socks (suffers in the cold)
m&m selection box (favourite chocs)
local-made berry non-alcoholic cordial bottle
yet to get traditional Thornton's toffee

Another nice idea is a selection of quality local produce in a homemade hamper (basket from The Works). We can get loads of quality local produce in the co-op where we are like Lincolnshire plum bread and Grantham Gingerbread etc and posh cordials, jams, tea etc -an afternoon tea hamper?

dottiedodah · 13/12/2022 15:21

Maybe a voucher for Afternoon Tea? or a small hamper filled with goodies from Waitrose (card shop sell baskets you can fill yourself) Giant Chocolate Bar ,or Toblerone. If you have a larger budget then Red Letter Days have a one night stay at a country house in Worcester, with Morgan car hire thrown in for £295.00.May be an upper age limit though (could always do a hotel stay only). Voucher for Halfords or suchlike.I have wrapped my vouchers in small boxes for presents .

A hammock car seat cover for the back seat , brilliant things even if you don’t have a dog which is what they are marketed for .

Food hamper of his favourite items

Was just about to suggest this myself.

I get my dad a £20 note and chocolate Santa. Every year for pretty much 20 years. He is always happy enough.

Mrsjayy · 13/12/2022 15:38

A jumper sweets and money is my go too for my dad. He also likes puzzle books so he gets those.

80sMum · 13/12/2022 15:38

Something edible, perhaps? Make up a little hamper/box of some extra nice savoury biscuits, some unusual cheeses, spreads and chutneys etc.

electricdreaming · 13/12/2022 15:39

Does he drink? The only older man in my family I get pyjamas and/or slippers and a bottle of fancy whiskey.

GeorgeorRuth · 13/12/2022 15:40

Would he do a car themed jigsaw puzzle?

woodhill · 13/12/2022 15:40

Df has everything so receives nice shower gel he likes and chocolates

caringcarer · 13/12/2022 15:47

We used to buy my fil a cricket ticket and drive him there and collect him. Sadly he has passed now.

Kiitos · 13/12/2022 15:59

Membership to an owners club, or subscription to a car magazine for his type of car?

Item of clothing from Uniqlo (I think good for men of this age - not old man-ish but not too trendy that it won’t get worn) - their lightweight packable rain jackets etc are useful

Nice torch or rechargeable lantern

Dressing gown

mam0918 · 13/12/2022 16:06

Metal garage sign linked to his car brand/make/type etc...

FinallyHere · 13/12/2022 16:07

Framed photo of the family.

Card for local coffee shop.

woopdedoodle · 13/12/2022 16:20

It's too late for this year but last year it was hand knitted jumpers, very popular with the 80 year olds.

For the 73 year old in my life, a gyroscope, a re print of a record of motor bike noises, and good head phones. Last year, a steam engine, and guitar strings.

Noonesperfect · 13/12/2022 16:24

A car themed calendar or diary perhaps.

maranella · 13/12/2022 16:36

I usually buy my older relatives food. Most of them don't really want or need anything, but most people appreciate some nice edible things. Does he like nuts, chocolates, jam, a certain tea or coffee, toffees, biscuits, etc? I never order hampers, because they're full of things people don't actually want, I buy the items individually. Would that work?

paintitallover · 13/12/2022 16:37

A car blanket, in case he gets stuck.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/12/2022 16:50
