Starter, turkey plus all the trimmings, pudding?

Would you bother?

Just me and dh last few years. Used to have one other relative but they are no longer with us.

I do a roast but not turkey with all the trimmings.
Dh would have a fit if no roasties and must be done from scratch. No Aunt Bessie here though I no longer sound ages prepping carrots parsnips and butternut squash. Thank you M&S and Mash Direct.
No proper starters but do some party food instead mid morning and then crack on with dinner. I keep buying Christmas pudding and we keep on not wanting it as have had enough. Still have last years so may give it a go. Though will get a M&S sherry trifle even though there is only me now to eat it.

Yes

OakTreex · 10/12/2022 18:25

I'm totally on my own this year with toddler. I'm not doing turkey, I think I'm going to do a roast but with a chicken in a bag and chuck some pigs in blankets in.

No point going overboard when DC too young to even realise and will probably eat three mouthfuls!

BeyondMyWits · 10/12/2022 18:26

Our "best year" was when the oven broke, the family (6 were coming) were all down with noro, so it was the 2 of us... we had pigs in blankets, airfryer chips and cauliflower cheese. And 3 different puddings.

So no starter, whatever you fancy for main and a lot of pudding... I can heartily recommend it.

Dougieowner · 10/12/2022 18:31

We don't eat meat but we always do a full Christmas lunch (& pudding) despite there only being the two of us.

CarefreeMe · 10/12/2022 18:34

I definitely wouldn’t do a starter as I never have them anyway.

I’d have a turkey crown for the main meal and get some things frozen like the veg (probably not roast potatoes as they don’t taste as good).

Then I’d get a ready made dessert like a trifle or whatever you fancy.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/12/2022 18:51

Def. Well 3 of us including dd5

Neither of us are that fond of turkey so will have lamb. Pots. Parsnips. Carrot sweed mash. Cauliflower cheese. Pigs in blankets stuffing yorkies

And some kind of pudding

No started as stuffs you

Pasithean · 10/12/2022 19:17

I’m getting over an op had the same last year so on enteral feed for-the second year . Full dinner will be cooked by me just for DP as last year.

Andsoforth · 10/12/2022 19:21

No starter, not as many vegetable choices and I’d probably do a crown or a boned and rolled turkey. But the joy of Christmas is the leftovers.

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/12/2022 19:21

Yes. It would be a chicken rather than turkey but would make it special, have loads of veg and roast potatoes, and definitely have a Christmas pud and mince pies.

bloodywhitecat · 10/12/2022 19:26

I am and it's just me and a 2 and a half year old in the house. The toddler's food won't even touch their lips as I will blend it and feed it via a tube into their tummy but we will be having a Christmas dinner (no starters though).

cavily1806 · 10/12/2022 19:27

Only ever been us two in lockdown. I did a chicken cos we don't like turkey, then frozen toasties and parsnips, easy gravy and steamed carrots. Might have been my favourite ever as we suited ourselves!

CheeseIsMyPatronus · 10/12/2022 19:28

DH would cook one just for himself - and occasionally does. I'd be happy to only have a roast dinner once or twice a year, he'd love them weekly.

I'd rather have scallops to start and fish as a main.

Macaroni46 · 10/12/2022 19:29

No starter but then I never do a starter for Christmas dinner. I'd do a turkey crown.

msbevvy · 10/12/2022 19:31

Definitely not. It is a relief if we dont have bother with all that stuff. I love a roast but will cook it whenever I feel like it, not just because it is Christmas .

Last year we had Chilli Con Carne. A few years ago we were travelling and forgot to pack our sandwiches. Christmas lunch consisted of crisps and pasties from the petrol station.

Poppins17 · 10/12/2022 19:32

It’s just DH and I this year, and yes we are having a full meal. Depending upon whether we have a big breakfast we may not have a starter (pate), but will have a full Christmas dinner as well as a Christmas pudding.

jtaeapa · 10/12/2022 19:33

If we both cooked it together, then yes. If I was expected to be the skivvy, then no.

This

I would love this but I have no chance with 4 dds who can’t wait for the whole Christmas hoo haa.

Seasider2017 · 10/12/2022 19:40

The older I get (65) the less I’m bothered
I can take it leave it, takeaway would suit me fine
but I don’t enjoy cooking, it’s a chore and after cooking it hardly ever enjoy it as much as I thought I would

MrsMitford3 · 10/12/2022 19:41

Do you want a full christmas dinner?

maddiemookins16mum · 10/12/2022 19:54

Oh yes, we’d go the whole hog, prep the night before and spend time in the kitchen drinking and singing along to the radio. We always said just because it’s only us two, why shouldn’t we enjoy it.

I spent Christmas 1997 alone, I cooked a roast chicken and did the trimmings too.

We always go out to our lovely local restaurent on Christmas Day, except for the pandemic years when their owner / chef provided us with the main ingredients as takeaway.

The location of the restaurent is one of the top reasons I was keen to live in this village and in walking distance of this establishment.

We used to eat several courses, fish, soup, roast meats, cheese, pudding, savoury.

Sadly, as we get older our appetites have waned so just a light starter probably prawn cocktail type to start, then 'the works'. It's the only time we eat turkey all year, large legs deboned and stuffed with chestnuts snd forcemeat. One leg is the size of a small roast. All.the.veg. Pigs in blankets and Devils on horseback.

Roast potato's and gravy to die for. We usually low carb so the roast potatoes are a particular festive treat, just like medieval times when people were often hungry and eating their full of food was an unusual treat.

I'm salivating already. It is honestly just once a year. We will bring back another leg do that there are leftovers to feast on on Boxing Day (back to just veg though, we aren't barbarians.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 10/12/2022 20:04

Yes I would but I find doing it very easy and don't get worked up about it all like some folk do. 🤔 Cold leftovers on boxing day too. Yum!

TooHotToRamble · 10/12/2022 20:05

Yes but we never have a starter at Christmas. Dinner is massive not sure how anyone fits one in! Pudding is also usually on the sofa a few hours later! Lol!
