Would you still do a full Christmas Dinner if it was just you and DH?

Starter, turkey plus all the trimmings, pudding?

Would you bother?

Don't let reduced numbers quash your party spirit. The joy if it only being two is that you just need to please yourselves and don't need to worry about fractious kids or Uncle Clive. I'd certainly go all out, but it wouldn't feature turkey as I find turkey depressing. Beef wellington, roast duck, roast chicken, rib of beef, elaborate mezze feast...

Crumpleton · 10/12/2022 16:55

No matter how many I've catered for I've never bothered with a starter and pudding was never straight after dinner, but yes I'd still do a full blown roast.

catsonahottinroof · 10/12/2022 16:55

I might do but not every year. When I did I'd probably do soup/starters at lunch time or to nibble on throughout the day but Christmas dinner at tea time. Then a pudding a bit later, or maybe just cheese and crackers. I do like christmas pudding but normally too full for it.

A nice change that I'd like to do would be takeaway Indian or Chinese if we had one near us open on Christmas day.

ProfYaffle · 10/12/2022 16:55

Yes, though I'd also think about going out as it wouldn't be as expensive for only 2 of us rather than the whole family.

pimlicoanna · 10/12/2022 16:56

Definitely but mine's always from M&S so not too much hard work

EBearhug · 10/12/2022 16:57

Yes, because I love proper Christmas dinner and have done it for the Christmases I've had alone. No starter (never did in our family,) turkey breast or turkey crown, pigs in blankets, roast spuds, brussels, carrots, cauliflower, parsnips, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, gravy. Probably skip the pud, as I'm not keen anyway, and then loads of leftovers for the next couple of days. Lush.

Always4Brenner · 10/12/2022 16:58

I’m on my own everything prepped slices of turkey frozen stuff etc but yes I’m doing full dinner I’m doing a five course one Christmas Eve.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 10/12/2022 16:58

Two courses here - lamb roast with our favourite sides and a couple of puddings which we will pick at through the afternoon and into the evening.

PauliesWalnuts · 10/12/2022 17:00

If boyfriend’s kids are with their mum then there’s just two of us. We have a decent breakfast and then go our separate ways for a few hours to individually see family members. Then we come back and put a joint in the oven and go for a walk. Get back and finish cooking the rest to eat around six - usually a smoked salmon starter, then roast beef or pork, stuffing, roast spuds, yorkshires, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, proper gravy. We both love Christmas pud, and usually have a bit of cheese and crackers in front of the tv around ten. I’m usually in bed by ten at the latest so me staying up to watch a film with himself he sees as a real treat. We do a lot of walking between Christmas and NY so we take a lot of packed lunches made up of lovely leftovers from the nights before.

Scoobyblue · 10/12/2022 17:00

Yes definitely. But might do chicken or other smaller bird instead of turkey

listsandbudgets · 10/12/2022 17:01

If left entirely to our own devices I reckon we'd have big steak, chips and various sides followed by a huge cheese board and meat platter with lots of nice crackers. DPwpuld have nice bottle of wine and I'd have some up market non alcohol drinks

However we are.going to my mums and there wlill be 16 or 17 of us round the table ( how I don't know! 😅) so it will be a full on Christmas Dinner!

RoseMartha · 10/12/2022 17:01

No. Probably buy a couple of chicken breasts and do a small roast.

PauliesWalnuts · 10/12/2022 17:02

Five courses @Always4Brenner ? Please share your menu!

anyolddinosaur · 10/12/2022 17:03

We dont like turkey so wouldnt have it. Would still have a roast but a small one. The wine would be more expensive than usual though.

Athenen0ctua · 10/12/2022 17:13

It will be just me and DS this year. We are doing the things we like. Roast chicken, roast potatoes, roast veg. I have single serve puddings as I like Christmas and he likes chocolate.

Inasec24 · 10/12/2022 17:24

Yes!!

Tessabelle74 · 10/12/2022 17:26

Nope, I have sandwiches if I'm here on my own, I hate cooking though

Craftybodger · 10/12/2022 17:26

Absolutely. Turkey, all the trimmings, 10 veg, yummy!

snowmanshoes · 10/12/2022 17:41

I would yes!

Baldieheid · 10/12/2022 17:44

I never do turkey - we have a large roast chicken. We're a small family and that's plenty big enough with leftovers. I always do loads of roast spuds and parsnips, along with roast beetroot, steamed brussels sprouts and brocolli and carrots. I want leftovers for bubble and squeak the next day!! Homemade, proper bread sauce and proper homemade gravy would finish it all off. We're not stuffing fans so wouldn't bother.

Pudding is a bought christmas pudding and either custard (Birds) or maybe some rum butter if I've planned ahead and bought some.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 10/12/2022 17:50

DH and I love our Christmas Dinner, just the two of us.

Roast chicken (prefer it to turkey), roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, chipolatas wrapped in bacon, stuffing, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, gravy.

Pudding: something lovely served with single cream. I've gone right off Christmas pudding. So, I'll look for an alternative hot pudding, probably posh sponge of some description.

CourtneeLuv · 10/12/2022 17:57

We don't have a full dinner, just the bits we like.

If we have a starter I'll do prawn cocktail. That's what dh always had growing up, and we didn't have starters in my house.

Beef
Yorkies
Stuffing balls
Roast potatoes
Pigs in blankets
Gravy
Might do peas as a token vegetable.

Probably get a roulade for dessert.

RestingMurderousFace · 10/12/2022 17:57

I do a full dinner with all the trimmings for me and my dogs. I do draw the line at Christmas pudding though, only because they'd be shitting through the eye of a needle until new year. 😆

Chattycathydoll · 10/12/2022 17:58

Yes, I did when it was just me and ex while pregnant and I do it now it’s just me & DD! I love it, we deserve special things too regardless of the size of our family.

Westfacing · 10/12/2022 18:00

Yes I would!

Leftovers can be eaten in the coming days or portioned and put in the freezer for New Year.

Enjoy!
