What is the best gift for an under 1 year old? Been a long time since I've bought for a baby.

It really depends on the age, the answer will be very different for a 2 week old newborn potato than it would be for a crawling/walking 11 month old

Good point I'm buying for a 5-6 month old. Price isn't an issue I would just like to buy something useful for the parents and fun for the LO.

I bought my friend’s baby a set of colourful sensory balls from Amazon which were well liked.

My DS liked Leapfrog Scout as a baby/toddler.

Sensory books or the small one’s that attach to the pram/car seat on a coil.

Fisher-Price Xylophone. Mine loved it as soon as they started sitting up at around 5-6 months.
The new Giant Light-Up one looks great.

Toomies hide and squeak eggs

RainbowPhilosophy · 03/12/2022 19:18

My DS had one of these when he was tiny and found it fascinating to spin it and watch the little balls inside bounce around 😊

Bright Starts rattle

Defo those squeaky eggs as mentioned above. Every baby I know has loved them.

One thing ours loved at that age so we've always got them now is the v tech shape sorter drum. It's red and yellow.

The voice can grate after a while 🤣

AnotherCF · 03/12/2022 22:06

A mini football. Good for holding before they crawl, chasing once they are moving and kicking once they are walking. We have so many memories associated with ours.

Goldbar · 03/12/2022 22:24

Stacking blocks/cups will start to get a lot of use over the next few months when the baby starts sitting up and crawling. They have good longevity as a toy too. Depending on your budget, Vilac do some lovely "musical" blocks.

ShesThunderstorms · 03/12/2022 22:26

A cute outfit with a gift receipt. I always loved getting clothes when my kids were tiny as they grew so quick and they didn't know about gifts and stuff at that age anyway.

Agree with galt pop up toy, by now 14m old still roars with laughter every time they pop.
Also books are great, we like the Julia Donaldson series with hide & seek pig, badgers band, rabbits nap etc.
musical instruments
Bath toys

I get this for all the babies in our family and without exception, they’ve loved it. Lots of flashing lights, music and blocks to chomp on from 6months, and is still being played with at 18 months.

OdeToAutumn · 03/12/2022 23:17

I have got my baby some Lego bath toys that look really cute.

Ask the parents especially if you want it to benefit them. They may have ideas if things they want or need that you can get for them.

user375242 · 04/12/2022 13:43

Lanco or Havea or Sophie giraffe natural rubber teething toys
Bamboo Bamboo suction plates or bowls
Long sleeved or wipe clean weaning bibs, Bibetta and Close Pop In are good brands.

GlassDeli · 04/12/2022 13:45

Cloth books or board books, e.g. the That's Not My... series.

mam0918 · 04/12/2022 19:34

yep the eggs are popular (Tomy or Infunbebe).

Magnadoodle great and grows with them, my 6 month old loved it as much as my 4 year old.

A toy phone was liked.

Lamaze toys.

mam0918 · 04/12/2022 19:35

A taggly blankey is cool aswell (its a small cloth square witj lots of 'tags' on it that and be twiddled or sucked/chewed on)

mam0918 · 04/12/2022 19:37

My DD also loves her electronic Gund teddies to (kissy penguin, clappy monkey, the peekaboo bear etc...) still uses them now a year on.

YourWinter · 04/12/2022 19:39

Following for the brilliant ideas. Harder when baby has an older sibling and all their first toys are in use!

Squamata · 04/12/2022 20:14

If you don't want to do toys, a good practical present is a splash mat for under high chair. Much easier to clean than flooring, can go in wash machine, can take on holiday with carpeted floors etc.
Also we love our disco light that was about £10-15, cd be used for a baby sensory home experience then disco dancing as child grows, parties in the fullness of time. Great for a rainy day when you've run out of ideas!
The toy my kids have used most are stacking cups, without a doubt.
