I love choosing and giving presents, as does my DH (who is very good at it).

It's also lovely to receive something amazing, thoughtful or cool isn't it?

What's the best ever gift you've received ? Doesn't have to be lavish or expensive, just lovely and memorable.

Mine: I'd always coveted a particular type of blossom tree, and would ooh and ahhh at all the local ones each year they bloomed in spectacular style . For our first Christmas at our new home together DH bought me a tree for Christmas. I cried, instantly as it meant so much. It was planted over 20 years ago now (we have since moved). The new people havej kept it and love it as much as we did.

Smashing ❤️

Not what you're looking for (but as you asked Xmas Grin )

When I was 9yo , my guinea-pig (DBro also got a guinea pig)

Then years later when DD was 9yo we spent eight years with guinea-pigs ( 8 of the little varmits ) they are addictive .

A winter box for my ponies. I loved it. It was made up of treats, hand wipes, hot chocolate to have at the stables, thermal gloves, socks and lots of other stuff. I was using most of it until summer. It was the thought that he'd put into it that was so lovely.

My cat.

She is no longer with us but she was the best present I ever got.

ConnieSaks · 22/12/2022 19:56

A pair of (child sized) American Tan tights - I was 6. I have never ever felt as overwhelmed with such sheer joy by any other present since! Just remembering the moment still makes me happy!

Greydogs123 · 22/12/2022 19:59

The only present I really remember getting as a child, as in genuinely remember my pleasure at receiving it and joy in playing with it, was the A la carte kitchen! Probably had it when I was 5 and I remember the advert so clearly and desired it so strongly, but didn’t have parents that generally bought the “must have” present. I was completely delighted with it and still remember playing with it - I never made baked beans and Swiss roll for my mum and dad, though!😁

As a child, ballet shoes. As an adult a beautifully bound book that I loved as a teenager

Virginiaplain · 22/12/2022 20:03

Schwartz binoculars. Small and light weight but expensive. For Birdwatching and anything else.

Dogsinthecradle · 22/12/2022 20:03

Cotton candy the my little pony
it sparked a love of my little ponies/horses-I collect them now as an adult

HarrietSchulenberg · 22/12/2022 20:05

As a child, my first Sindy as I'd wanted one forever.

As an adult, a stove top waffle maker one year and a mechanical apple peeler and corer another year.

My Bertie. Eight years ago this month.
I'd never had a rabbit, but l'd always wanted a house rabbit. My (now) ex said he didn't know what to get me, so would l like Bertie from him (I'd already seen Bertie and decided to adopt him).
Best present EVER. I had him for seven years, and also adopted three friends for him. Such a sweet little soul and such a character. I miss him. And his friends.

A ceramics course. It sparked a love of ceramics and I did several more before covid hit and stopped it. I've got a course as a gift this Christmas and I can't wait.

We went to an art gallery together and I raved about a particular painting. Next birthday, I got a framed print. It’s been on my bedroom wall for many years and in 3 different houses and still gives me pleasure.

When I was in my early 20s my mother got me a minidisc player and a nice watch. It doesn't sound particularly special but my mum is spectacularly, I mean horrifically bad at choosing presents for people. I dread it every year, wondering how bad it'll be this time. I used to do quite a long walk to and from work and the minidisc player got used to death (this was pre-iPod and iPhone), and I actually liked the watch and wore it. It was so unlike my mum to actually think about what someone might like and want, and then buy it, that over 20 years later I still remember it. It's the only time I ever remember her getting it right for any member of our family without being firmly led. Most importantly, it's one of the very, very few times I've felt she had really seen me and known me. That's why it felt special. It didn't last past that one Christmas.

A mobile phone.
I was a teenager.
And it was just as people were starting to have them. So it was a big deal. a few of my friends had them but not all. I kept asking for one and I kept being told no so I was not expecting one at all.
Then I opened it and it was a mobile phone!
I couldn't believe it!

I remember a dolls house given to me by mum and dad at around 10. Partly it was fabulous, partly in a negative way cos of my dads stress in building it. Apart from that I don’t remember any other gifts particularly, it’s just consumerism and nonsense.

Stryke · 22/12/2022 20:13

A marl grey tracksuit when I was about 8 (early eighties). It was so cosy, in an era where trackies tended to be either proper sporty, or shellsuit, not for just chilling in or mooching about town. My mother was not fashion-conscious at all, but she occasionally made a lucky choice for me.

Littleguggi · 22/12/2022 20:15

A toy sewing machine, although it was a toy it actually worked too. Must have been around 10.

WhatFreshHeII · 22/12/2022 20:22

DH proposed five days after we met but couldn't afford a ring at the time. Eight months later on Christmas Eve he did the whole down in one knee thing in front of the Christmas tree and gave me a beautiful diamond ring. We're just coming up to our 20th Christmas together and every Christmas Eve since we remember our first one very fondly.

Also a Girl's World when I was five. I have never been so excited in my life, before or since 😁

hauntedvagina · 22/12/2022 20:25

As a child, my My Little Pony castle. I could only have been five but I still remember unwrapping it. Amazing.

claireb7rg · 22/12/2022 20:29

Best gift(s) I have received - both last year

My kids (adopted) ended up moving in with us 2 weeks early on the 20th December

And I opened this on Christmas day - completely unexpected! He done good 😊

As a child in the 1950s I was given a miniature Coronation coach .I loved that fairy tale replica and have never forgotten it .

when I was 8, my favourite aunty gave me a tiny grey and white kitten. She'd brought it in from the farm in an empty flour bag, so kitty popped out all dusty with flour. I had her for years and she was a character.

I was genuinely coming on to say My Little Pony Dream Castle. Loved it!

Figgypudding123 · 22/12/2022 20:55

A kids typewriter when I was 10. I was deliriously happy.

As an adult, a glass Christmas bauble from my Aunt. She bought it for me before her death but didn't live to see Christmas. Most precious thing on my tree...

MsChatterbox · 22/12/2022 21:12

Baby choo choo and extra outfits. Best Christmas ever!
