How much do you spent on meat over Christmas?

I remember being horrified as a young adult that my parents spent £70 on Christmas meat. This was 1999 and was from the butchers. Turkey crown, ham, possibly beef, sausages and bacon. They were short of money and I couldn't believe how much it cost. That was for the 2 of them and my sister, brother in law and their young dc who'd barely eat any of it.
I dread to think what that would cost now especially as someone in the family has just spent £150 on turkey alone. I saw a headline about shortages this year but recall that in previous years too so it could just be typical scare tactics.

Nothing for me or DM as we don’t eat it. We get a small ‘free range’ chicken, around £25 for DH and DD.
I think most eaters are going to have to get used to paying more for meat or cutting back.

PuttingDownRoots · 01/12/2022 13:57

I had a complete WTF moment browsing the M&S Christmas catalogue.

JackieDaws · 01/12/2022 13:59

I agree, the poors shouldn't have nice meat at Xmas or indeed any time of year.

Murasakispillowbook · 01/12/2022 13:59

We never did the meat thing. But then we never had lots of people round who would eat it up afterwards. We don't tend to do the boxing day buffet. And there's only 7 of us for lunch.

We buy whatever meat we're having on Christmas lunch. That's pretty much it! A turkey or a leg of lamb. Last year was beef in red wine.

So maybe £20 tops?

LSSG · 01/12/2022 14:00

I've bought mine in flash sales within my weekly budget and frozen it. Free range (and organic where possible) but just basics nothing fancy, chicken, a ham, a v small beef joint, pigs in blankets and a stuffing.

FourChimneys · 01/12/2022 14:02

Nothing. Everyone who is likely to be in our house long enough to eat a meal in late December is either vegetarian or vegan.

DenholmElliot11 · 01/12/2022 14:03

I get a turkey, a ham and sausages, from Booths and spend about £185.

Chikapu · 01/12/2022 14:03

Nothing, I'm vegetarian and the husband eats mostly veggie.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 01/12/2022 14:04

£0. Vegetarian household.

Christmaslover2022 · 01/12/2022 14:07

My m.i.l spends loads. She does 3 meats including a layer duck type thing. We find it excessive, so when it's just us we just have a small stuffed turkey crown. Cost about £9. We tend to do sausage or bacon not usually both for 1 breakfast a week.

FlamingoSocks · 01/12/2022 14:23

Got a boneless rib of beef, turkey crown, 3 gammons, pigs in blankets etc. We are 10 for lunch then will take various gammons round to parents and live on leftovers .
Got it all from Waitrose and spent £140
Have bought turkeys for more than £100. Tbh it’s not something I mind spending out on. I love that feast idea of Christmas.

daisyjgrey · 01/12/2022 14:30

Got a rolled and boned turkey, sausages and bacon from the butchers to feed 12 for £38. I'll buy some sausage meat for stuffing for about a fiver.

yetanothercleverusername · 01/12/2022 14:32

Ordered a goose to feed 5 for £100.
Had to try a few places to find one with any in stock, apparently due to bird flu related shortages.
Not sure what the AIBU is though, other than confirming that different people have different likes/dislikes and budgets. I don't think that should come as a surprise.

treadcarefully · 01/12/2022 14:38

We get a large turkey breast from our local farm. Costs around £70. It's huge and plenty for Xmas dinner, sandwiches and a curry. Fortunately my dad always pays as his contribution to the meal.

Greydogs123 · 01/12/2022 14:42

I’ve just priced up at our local butchers for a joint of beef to serve 7 people with some leftovers for Boxing Day and some pigs in blankets (full chipolatas wrapped in a slice of bacon 🤤) and was told it would be around £50 which I thought was pretty good.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 01/12/2022 14:43

Like many others on the thread nothing as we’re a vegetarian household consequently Christmas dinner will probably cost about £10 for 4 adults

ifonly4 · 01/12/2022 14:48

Always buy what we need for the main day - so this year it'll be £5.50 turkey breast from Tesco and hoping to get salmon fillet on offer at Lidl - £2.50ish for two. Max £8.

Byelaws · 01/12/2022 14:49

We have spent upwards of £200 in previous years - but then we get a lot of visitors and I like to order from the butchers in one go.

I think butchers will be the beneficiaries of prices going up in the supermarket. People think of meat as special and they will buy it with a bit more of an effort, not just throw it in a trolley without thinking.

AgnesNaismith · 01/12/2022 14:50

£250, lots of visitors, should last at least a week!

TheChosenTwo · 01/12/2022 14:51

Around £200 at the butchers for Christmas Day, this is a big 4 rib forerib of beef, a ham joint and sausages and bacon for pigs in blankets.
Always get it from the butchers, they are brilliant there and the farms that supply them are fairly local too.
Never have Turkey, hate the stuff.

DiDonk · 01/12/2022 14:55

Only clicked on this to see the vegetarians saying "nothing" and am not disappointed.

Will be buying a capon. Plus some fois gras and oysters. Probably 150 eur.

Legallypinkish · 01/12/2022 14:56

Turkey is around £70 and usually a gammon around £10/15.

Bullshot · 01/12/2022 14:57

£0

vegan household here . Our Xmas visitors are omnivores but happy to eat vegan whilst in our home

AuntieMarys · 01/12/2022 14:59

Rarely eat meat ...will be buying good sausages for breakfast baps, and charcuterie for the cheeseboard. Other than that, no meat.
