How much do you spent on meat over Christmas?

I remember being horrified as a young adult that my parents spent £70 on Christmas meat. This was 1999 and was from the butchers. Turkey crown, ham, possibly beef, sausages and bacon. They were short of money and I couldn't believe how much it cost. That was for the 2 of them and my sister, brother in law and their young dc who'd barely eat any of it.
I dread to think what that would cost now especially as someone in the family has just spent £150 on turkey alone. I saw a headline about shortages this year but recall that in previous years too so it could just be typical scare tactics.

Turkey crown, boned, stuffed and rolled, wrapped in bacon £13 per kg.
3kg £39

Highfivemum · 01/12/2022 15:16

I over spend on meats as get turkey / pork/gammon/beef/sausage and bacon. I get them in on the 22nd and they will last till new year being used. I save for them and get them from local village butcher who allows me to during the year. Spent 278 pound this year but we are a family of 8 and then my bro and my friend will be with us for 2 days and I always cook for my two elderly neighbours for Christmas Day and Boxing Day so not bad really

AutisticLegoLover · 01/12/2022 15:30

@Bullshot what do you have for your main but instead of meat? We are vegetarian but never have a nut toast or anything, just everything else without the meat.

After years of spending £££ on turkeys, the last few years we have a large free range chicken instead, easily feeds 5 of us with everything else on the plate and costs about £10.

Ham usually costs about the same, plus lots of pigs in blankets so probably about £40 in total.

Edinvillian · 01/12/2022 16:02

We're going for three meats this year for 10 of us, with lots of leftovers for the next day and beyond. Cost I think will be about £90 but I'm using my Asda vouchers so should only cost about £15.

thelobsterquadrille · 01/12/2022 16:08

For Christmas Day itself, maybe £10 tops. There's only two of us and we do roast chicken and pigs in blankets as our "meat" elements.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 01/12/2022 16:13

Why on earth are vegetarians answering?

will get a turkey crown, gammon and maybe some steaks. $200, I’d guess.

mondaytosunday · 01/12/2022 16:19

I think the turkey crown I'm getting from Waitrose is £40. I have spent loads on a roast beef which we have on New Years Eve - like £75.
This year we are having a ham on Boxing Day but that's only £17.

Buckland123 · 01/12/2022 16:25

@Youhaveyourhandsfull the OP asked how much people were spending on meat. Vegetarians can answer with ‘zero’, same as all the meat eaters can say ‘£200’ or whatever they spend 😳

We haven’t eaten meat in years - I’m shocked at how much it costs now! Anyone struggling with costs of food could save a fortune by cutting it out.

Merryoldgoat · 01/12/2022 16:27

Around £100 on a beef fillet and then probably another £50-£60 on various other things.

We essentially budget for an additional week's shop for festive food plus the £150 for meat but whoever is not hosting buys the big fillet - we almost always host so MIL brings that and some other lovely bits and pieces - we only have 6 for Christmas generally

Because OP didn't specify that she only wanted to hear from meat eaters?

And not all meat eaters cook meat at Christmas. My dad is pescatarian so my parents do a nut roast or fish dish for Christmas, even though my mum love a roast dinner too.

We're a small family (me and 2 adult DC) and don't like Turkey, so usually I'll do a large chicken and a leg of lamb. I'm not fussed about them being free range/organic, so I usually don't spend more than £25 combined. We don't eat enough of things like ham to buy a big chunk of it, so I just get a few slices of various meats. But no more really than I'd get at other times of the year, so don't really count that.

I'm planning to spend no more than about £60 on Christmas food in total. We don't eat a lot of the sweet stuff so I'm cutting that right down this year too. I do find I have to fight against the idea I need to buy loads, in my own head! But it's just wasteful and we won't eat it anyway.

Babdoc · 01/12/2022 16:36

£110 for a free range Kelly bronze turkey from a local farm. (Scotland, so not culled or forced indoors due to bird flu yet - they roam the apple orchards, munching windfalls.) £2 or £3 for whisky soaked streaky bacon to wrap the turkey in.
For Xmas Eve, I will be getting some big coarse smoked, thick salmon steaks from the farmers’ market - about £20 or so.
Then about another £20 for Parma ham, meat pates, smoked venison etc for lunch buffets.

MintJulia · 01/12/2022 16:36

For two of us, a supermarket chicken (£6) and a piece of free range gammon (£10). Plus pigs in blankets (£4). So £20 will see us through Christmas week.

I'll also buy smoked salmon (£8), quails eggs, hens eggs and cheese. (£10). I'll make leftovers into soup & risotto, bacon croutons and some cheese & olive scones.

That's about twice what we would usually spend on protein for a week.

StrawberryWater · 01/12/2022 16:44

Very little.

A supermarket chicken for lunch (none of us like turkey)
Bacon and sausages for Oh’s XMas morning fry up
Pigs in blankets for the evening buffet

Maybe £10.

If oh has a beef wellington then it goes up to about £20 but he’s not having one this year.

Lilyhatesjaz · 01/12/2022 16:50

About 20 pounds. I bought a large frozen chicken a few weeks ago before the prices went up, I have bought bacon and sausages to make pigs in blankets and I will get a small ham. This is for 4 adults

Sockwomble · 01/12/2022 17:06

Have spent £6 on pigs in blankets and stuffing. Everything else is vegetarian.

Soontobe60 · 01/12/2022 17:14

About £100. 2 rib of beef, free range chicken, belly pork plus bacon and chipolatas for PIBs. 5 adults, 1 teen, 2 under 4s. I’m all about the left overs though!

miceonabranch · 01/12/2022 17:23

The others have a free range chicken and dh likes a ham. That's it. Meat is very expensive now.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/12/2022 17:39

A free range turkey and a big piece of U.K. higher welfare gammon, whatever they may cost - but many more meals out of them apart from Christmas day - every scrap will be used up, plus turkey stock from the carcass. The gammon will typically last well into the N Year.

I don’t do any other meat for Christmas, but will but will also buy ‘best’ pork sausages and streaky bacon well in advance, for making Ps in Bs and stuffing. (I squish the meat out of the sausages for stuffing.)
Depends on the size of turkey - small one this year - but all in all I will expect to pay around £100 for that lot.

SirenSays · 01/12/2022 17:45

We aren't spending a lot. The meat for our Chinese hot pot are about £8 a packet. And then for Christmas day we'll have duck for £20-30

BirmaBrite · 01/12/2022 18:01

Booths are doing their massive gammon for £19, usually get one of these and cut it into three and freeze it. Cook one bit for cold cuts and the other bits get eaten later in the new year.
Think we are going to have either pork or chicken this year, so probably £25-30 for the main meat ( will go to the butchers for this ) and then a small fortune on cheese and nibbles, although I have loads of olives and crackers, so just a few fresh bits to get.

jtaeapa · 01/12/2022 18:03

I substitute Turkey for chicken. Nobody cares. It can be a tenth of the price.

Funkyslippers · 01/12/2022 18:08

I once bought a small joint of wagu beef from Aldi for £20 a kilo and it was tough and not enjoyable. Last year we had a bog standard joint of pork that cost about £4 and it was lovely. This year we're having a 2 kilo turkey crown I paid about £5 for reduced in Aldi last Christmas Eve that I've kept in the freezer. I'm hopeful it will taste ok 😉

OoooohMatron · 01/12/2022 18:10

Role Poly turkey, around £35, Large gammon around £10, sausage meat, streaky bacon and pigs in blankets around £10 and smoked salmon for breakfast around £10. All from Aldi. I usually buy chicken livers to make pate which is a couple of pounds. I know people who spend a fortune at the local farm shop but I think they're mad. My Christmas dinner is great!
