I am looking for any good ideas for my auntie. She is absolutely wonderful and treats us all so well but is also so difficult to buy for.
She is early 60s, very practical and quite frugal (this doesn't seem like quite the right word but I can't think of a better one.)
She has enough money to buy the things that she would like but also doesn't buy things for the sake of having them.
Lots of her things are from charity shops, not because she is tight but because she prefers not to overpay but still have decent quality. In the same way she would be upset at the thought of someone over paying for a gift for her so higher end labels are a bit lost on her.

In the past a heated throw, hats/scarves/gloves, PJ's, books and DVDs have been appreciated but it's getting to the point that that's ALL I EVER buy her.
She gardens, but has everything that she needs for that.

Food would not go down well. She is quite a basic cook so no gadgets.

She doesn't have or want WiFi so an Alexa etc is out.
She has loads of jewellery and doesn't really do smellies.

To make it trickier we have agreed to a £20 per person limit.
I would love to get her something that she really likes that it also useful. (the heated throw fell into this category and she loved it)

Any ideas would be wonderful. I am really struggling for her and don't want to buy something crap for the sake of it.

Thank you

What about the wheat bags you put in the microwave? (In place of hot water bottles.)

PeonyRose80 · 30/11/2022 12:34

Cashmere wrist warmers by turtle doves. You can still use your hands but they are fantastic.

They are made from recycled cashmere.

PeonyRose80 · 30/11/2022 12:39

They go up past ur wrist - I love mine! And I am 42 but get super cold hands 😂

You can buy Charity Shop gift cards now you know!

BIWI · 30/11/2022 14:12

@Overreactionpossibly you can also buy cards where you can choose where to spend them

See here

Hot water bottle, driving gloves, bottle of her favourite tipple, book token.

Theoldwoman · 30/11/2022 14:36

If she’s a gardener, some nice gloves ( they do wear out) and some nice hand cream. ( L’Occitane?)

dontbringthatbirdinhere · 30/11/2022 15:20

A ticket to something, maybe a gardening exhibition if she likes gardening

pinkksugarmouse · 30/11/2022 15:54

Apologies if someone has suggested this. I haven’t read all through yet.

Does she do sentimental things? Maybe a framed photo of kids in the family, all those your side of the family if possible. Chances are someone has a decent camera on their phone. And go for an inexpensive but not ludicrously cheap frame.
You can get several photos in a mosaic. Easier if you want cousins but getting together is hard to organise.

You say "She can access some things through her phone but comes to my or my mum's house for us to help her with most things."

But then "she can't see what she would use [wifi] for". Isn't it obvious? She'd use it for all the things that she gets you and your Mum to help her with.

It's not a battle I'm going to win and Not one I'm going to push again.

@TottersBlankly - that NT at Home idea is flippin’ GENIUS! My DM will absolutely love that. Thank you 😊

Trumpton · 01/12/2022 09:04

I love the NT at home and as I have unlimited data on my phone could you hotspot off your phone to her iPad?

TottersBlankly · 01/12/2022 09:08

Pleasure!

Orla Keily wellies

Thank you so much for all of the fabulous ideas.
It's been especially useful hearing from the ladies that feel that they are a bit like my auntie. I'm going to keep the thread for her next birthday.
At the recommendation of someone on here, I have put together with my sister and have split the cost of an air fryer for her.
I've also bought the NT online for my dad. I think that he will love it.

I know she’s always quite busy but would these be nice for chilly evenings? I don’t think they scream old lady (hope not as I’ve bought them for my always cold 24 year old daughter!

I’ve just seen you’re sorted. Sorry

TottersBlankly · 01/12/2022 12:49

Exemplary OP update! GrinHalo

Glad you found some satisfactory gifts.

In the spirit of helpfulness - most women of my generation prefer to be referred to as women rather than ‘ladies’. The latter tends to suggest a de-sexed creature boiled down to blue rinse and rose scented talcum powder, with no interests outside lace doilies and the positioning of next door’s bins …

And I personally prefer ‘aunt’ to ‘auntie’. (But kind thoughts from others are always welcome, whatever the phraseology!)

Why thank you. It's nice to be exemplary at something. 😂

When we were kids, my mum would bollock us for saying woman instead of lady. It was considered rude e.g. that lady instead of that woman.
It's obviously stayed with me.

While she may have an interest in next door's bins( because they are massive CFs). She is certainly not a talcy, blue rinse type. In-fact we spend a lot of time together as friends really. We're not so much aunt(ie) and neice.

She's auntie because I have two small children and I always feel like aunt sounds more suitable for older neices/ nephews.
It also makes me think of Aunt Trunchbull for some reason.

Thank you again everyone.
