If you're not having turkey...

What are you having? Doesn't even need to be a roast. Looking for inspiration.

We're only ever 3 adults, last year I did the whole traditional dinner for the first time. Although it was nice, I couldn't help but think it wasn't worth the effort, cost or hype.

roast chicken

Only4timesPerWeek · 29/11/2022 19:12

We never have turkey as we don't like the taste.
This year we're having slow cooker hoggett, our friend is a sheep farmer and she's given us a whole leg.
Will have at least eight Brussels sprouts each plus roast vegetables, pigs in blankets and stuffing.

ladywithnomanors · 29/11/2022 19:12

Porchetta with all the usual veggies

Onionbhajisandwich · 29/11/2022 19:13

Home made chicken, leek and bacon pie here (same as last year). It’s delicious and can be made the day before.

Creamywhiteness · 29/11/2022 19:16

Takeaway from our local Indian restaurant with a group of neighbours. We’ll have a turkey roast toward new year

RosieRiveting · 29/11/2022 19:16

Porchetta here too, with traditional sides as that’s the bit the kids will eat. Only 2 of us will eat the meat. We’ve done steak in the past, rib of beef, and ham. Fancied pork this time.

We are having tartiflette this year as I want something easier than a roast. I can prep in advance the whole family love it and it feels like a decadent meal.

We’re having this on Boxing Day. It’s a very moreish meal! Good shout for Christmas Day too 👌

DipmeinChoc · 29/11/2022 19:19

Takeaway Curry. Its our Xmas tradition and we love it.

whatwasIgoingtosay · 29/11/2022 19:19

Last year we had the ready-cooked Aldi duck - 2 legs with a boneless breast joint and a port and plum glaze. £19.99. It was so easy (just needed heating in the oven) and absolutely delicious. We are going for it again this year, although they only get a few in, so we have a plan to go to a different store each and text when successful!

greenhousegal · 29/11/2022 19:19

Just us two here Hallelujah!! Neither of us like turkey and anyway it's too much for a small household.

So on the day it's Salmon on Crutches (en croute, lol). The usual spuds, roasties, and croquettes cos I love em. Roasted carrots, cauli and parsnips. A jug of white wine sauce or similar and that's pretty much it.

Our local butcher does fab stuffed chicken breast wrapped in bacon. That's for Boxing Day with whatever leftover spuds/veg we have. Frozen mega big chips otherwise.

Any old crap after that, and probably during it too. Who cares?

DogInATent · 29/11/2022 19:22

xmas eve - fish, usually as part of a cold spread
xmas day - roast duck
boxing day - honey and mustard glazed gammon
following week - leftovers

Same procedure as every year.

(although it's dinner for two, knowing MN someone will get the reference and 😉)

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 29/11/2022 19:25

A capon.

We are having bbq pulled pork burgers with coleslaw, onion rings and halloumi fries, banana splits for dessert

Sounds gorgeous! Just floated this past my roast-hating teen. It was a resounding yes. Just got to test the water with my parents now.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 29/11/2022 20:00

Anything other than turkey, possibly duck.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 29/11/2022 20:01

@DogInATent I got it. 👍

Madcats · 29/11/2022 20:20

House of 3 here, who will have had plenty of corporate/school Xmas lunches. I grew up with enormous family Christmases and sometimes wonder if I have taken it to the other extreme.

We're doing a small haunch of venison this year. If we are around for long enough for lots of leftovers we typically order a capon. Otherwise a fillet of beef is great.

JackandVera · 29/11/2022 20:22

We had beef wellington last year but it didn't feel right. Back to turkey.

Hoppinggreen · 29/11/2022 20:23

We go out for a curry now on Xmas day but we used to do a goose with red cabbage, knodel, cinnamon apples.

comfortablyfrumpy · 29/11/2022 20:25

Only 4 of us this year, and my kids aren't that keen on turkey so I am doing chicken but with all the trimmings.

Last year I did cockerel- was super but a bit too big for what we need this year.

Whichwhatnow · 29/11/2022 20:28

I'm not a massive turkey fan although I do love a roast with all the trimmings, so it's usually goose or beef.

This year I really fancy salmon en croute or maybe beef Wellington, with new potatoes and a couple of veg sides so might go for that instead.

Or maybe I'll have it this weekend instead... 🤔

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 29/11/2022 20:29

Been inspired by this thread to ask the family if they'd prefer turkey. We're hosting for the first time this year so I want it to be perfect. We are now having lamb with all the trimmings (although OH thinks the trimmings won't go with it - but its Christmas, so we're having them!).

IggyAce · 29/11/2022 20:30

Roast beef is traditional Christmas dinner in our house.

Tornado70 · 29/11/2022 20:32

Vegan roast: mushroom Wellington (Bosh recipe), roast potatoes, veggies, stuffing etc.
chocolate brownies and cream for desert.
Yum! And cruelty free.

Oldraver · 29/11/2022 20:33

We used to have Goose, then for many years stuffed duck. Added in a filet of beef a few years ago as IH doesn't like duck and means we have easy leftovers for Boxing Day

Twoshoesnewshoes · 29/11/2022 20:34

Salmon en croute here too, I don’t make it, straight from freezer to oven. With all the trimmings.
