If you're not having turkey...

What are you having? Doesn't even need to be a roast. Looking for inspiration.

We're only ever 3 adults, last year I did the whole traditional dinner for the first time. Although it was nice, I couldn't help but think it wasn't worth the effort, cost or hype.

Prime rib with everything.

Usually do pigs in blankets as appetizers.

TimBoothseyes · 29/11/2022 16:17

Mushroom wellington with mash for me and roast potatoes (for DP), and veg. DP will also have pigs-in-blankets but I won't because <whispers very quietly>, I don't like them.

Puddywoodycat · 29/11/2022 16:18

Duck

SirenSays · 29/11/2022 16:40

We never have turkey. We're having Chinese hot pot for everyone to share and a roasted duck on the day

Clutterbugsmum · 29/11/2022 16:45

We having Rolled Sirloin this year normally have four Rib beef roast. We have all the normal sides my DC would kill me if I didn't do pig in blankets.

I also do a gammon as well as one child does like beef and prefers gammon. Although she just as likely to eat only the veg.

Will be having turkey for news years day as the rest of the family like it.

bigbluebus · 29/11/2022 16:46

We don't have turkey here either. Last year we had rib of beef. In previous years we've had duck, goose, beef Wellington. This year I've ordered a cockerel. At least 2 of the farm shops around here have had to cancel customer orders for white free range turkeys as their suppliers have had to cull due to bird flu. The Kelly bronze turkeys are eye-wateringly expensive. I don't think many will be having good quality turkey this year!

catwithflowers · 29/11/2022 16:48

Either beef Wellington, potato dauphinoise and something green or home made pizzas in our outdoor pizza oven 😋. Just the two of us this year and the kids for Boxing Day. I actually prefer the pizza idea to be honest!

JorisBonson · 29/11/2022 16:50

Beef wellington / faux wellington for veggies!

stopringingme · 29/11/2022 17:04

We don't like turkey so we have gammon with all the trimmings and I cook extra so DH can have another roast at work on Boxing day

Doughdog · 29/11/2022 17:07

Pigs in blankets in the hole, with mash gravy amd braised red cabbage. Takes half an hour (cook the red cabbage the day before) all the kids adore it, best meal ever.

We have all sorts depending on what mood we’re in - each a traditional roast in its own way.

My favourite is goose. Love it. But expensive, and not as much meat.

My most sentimental favourite is roast pork loin, done the Danish way with perfect crackling and all the traditional sides just like my grandmother used to make it.

Some years we have turkey. We were very underwhelmed last year. Wasn’t great, not helped by having been overdone (I was not in charge last year).

We’ve had duck (also traditional back home), we’ve had Guinea fowl - like a more tasty chicken.

This year we’re having a rolled sirloin joint.

We always cook a ham too. Usually with a marmalade glaze, but this year I’m doing Delia’s blackened ham.

GrumpyPanda · 29/11/2022 17:43

For three people, a smallish goose, duck or capon - that's actual capon which need to be imported from France. Goose just as Turkey more expensive this year due to avian flu.

I'm cooking for dinner at my sister's this year so we'll probably go for roast beef which means I can transport it while it's resting in foil and don't need to commandeer their kitchen!

Topbird29 · 29/11/2022 17:44

Just 4 of us here - will be roast duck. Pretty easy to roast. Already in the freezer. Might get a turkey drumstick or similar as well for leftovers. Having main meal later in day though - much more relaxing to cook for later as can do with a glass of domethong whilst kids assembling lego.In laws here on boxing day so having a tesco slow cooked beef shin in truffle and red wine gravy. And a ham for buffet tea.

onwardandupwards · 29/11/2022 17:50

We are having bbq pulled pork burgers with coleslaw, onion rings and halloumi fries, banana splits for dessert

FairytaleofNewHampshire · 29/11/2022 17:51

We're having roasted cauliflower cheese filo pie, I haven't made it before but hopefully it will be nice.

AutumnLeaves0 · 29/11/2022 17:55

My family have always done goose when there’s lots of us and duck when only 3 or 4. So much nicer than turkey.

GirlGotGuts · 29/11/2022 17:56

We can’t decide. It’s just the two of us this year. Currently this duck is in the lead (made it before and it’s great, shove it in the oven and forget about it until just before you eat. You can just buy a hoisin sauce if you can’t be faffed making it). Would probably have a few dim sum or similar to go with it as a kind of pick and mix type meal.

@TangledWebofMincemeatDeception please can you share the danish way to cook pork loin (and sides) love trying recipes from other countries. My one trip to Denmark the food was epic!

Quveas · 29/11/2022 18:04

I don't really like turkey very much, but according to the news today a lot of people won't be having turkey www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-63797896

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 29/11/2022 18:04

@GirlGotGuts oh yes definitely, I’d be happy to! I’ll have to leave it ‘til tomorrow, though, as I’ve got to take myself off MN for a while now. But I’ll be back. 😊 🎄

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 29/11/2022 18:08

Pigs in blankets, many many of them. I asked the kids a few years ago what they wanted for Christmas dinner and this was it. We have them with roast potatoes, stuffing and veg. Don't need any other meat.

Thank you, any time would be lovely 😊

Luana1 · 29/11/2022 18:35

We usually have rib of beef or goose, but this year we are trying to keep costs down. There's of us and we are having this with all the usual christmas trimmings :)

snugglyblanket · 29/11/2022 19:05

I can't stomach the taste or smell of poultry since having covid last year so no turkey for me & can't substitute chicken or similar. We will be having roast beef with Yorkshires & all the trimmings. Still having pigs in blankets, etc. Nearly all of us prefer beef to turkey anyway but it wouldn't be the same without all the extras.
