A tip for our postman. Is it ok to just put money in a card?

Just that really. DH and I didn’t think to do it last year. We have a regular postman. I don’t want to just give him biscuits or chocolates. He is no doubt lugging enough stuff around. Ok a fiver isn’t exactly exciting but it’s easier to carry around and spend on whatever he wants.
My husband was a postman and tips at Christmas were common then but a long time ago so culture changes. Are you are postie? What would you think? Do you tip your postie?
Please stay polite people can get very nasty on MN about just about anything and everything. I have social anxiety. I don’t want to upset or offend anyone.

I’ve never tipped the postman. It’s not like Royal Mail even deliver everything nowadays. Do you tip the Amazon drivers and Hermes snd DPD and Yodel too?

AMBOG · 28/11/2022 13:57

I tip our postwoman.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/11/2022 14:00

That’s what we do, always have. We have a lovely postman, same one for years.

Of course Royal Mail deliver. Do you never receive a letter? 😳 Amazon and other drivers are different every time.

Yes they do, Ciri, and if there’s a RM when ordering online, I always use it, since I know our postman won’t leave a parcel on a doorstep a few doors away - as has happened more than once with sodding Evri.

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/11/2022 14:05

I love my postie, he’s amazing. I always stick a tenner in a card saying how much we appreciate him and he looks pleased as punch.

Festiveshennanigans · 28/11/2022 14:08

We tip ours too! £10 in a Christmas card. I also have a friend who works for the Royal Mail and I've checked this with her before. She assured me that it would be very much appreciated.

NoDairyNoProblem · 28/11/2022 14:08

We gave our postman a card last week with £10 in it as we support the strike and believe they deserve better. We will try to do the same each month it continues as it’s a lot of wages to lose, especially just now.

Ciri · 28/11/2022 14:09

I didn’t say they don’t deliver I said they don’t deliver everything like they used to back in the day.

We get post delivered by Royal Mail maybe a couple of times a week. I probably see the Amazon drivers more tbh.

Each to his own, I’m just saying that I’m 50 and I’ve never done it. Neither do I tip the bin men or the milkman.

hiredandsqueak · 28/11/2022 14:32

I put money in a card for our two posties as they do a great job around here. It's always well received and it means that they are always really good at putting parcels in the shed and locking up if I'm out so I don't have to rearrange deliveries or even worse go and collect from the sorting office.

Eukanuba · 28/11/2022 17:09

Yes , he's great and very appreciative .

pudseypie · 28/11/2022 17:14

Our postie only delivers mail to the wrong houses so my tip will be looking at the numbers on the doors as a helpful guide...

AlwaysLatte · 28/11/2022 17:22

We just write Christmas cards and put £20 notes in each for each dustman, postman, window cleaner. We normally get the gardener something a little more personal. We're out of the way somewhat and they have to come down here just for us so we like to show our appreciation.

Our postman comes every day. How do you get your letters then?
I don't tip the others you mention as they hardly ever come here and when they do they're different people. We've had the same postman for years.

daisychain01 · 28/11/2022 17:31

Our Postie is like a friend, he is really helpful and genuinely cares about the people he delivers post to. He likes it when we stand at the door if we're at home, so he can hand the post to us in person and have a quick chat.

Op £5 is fine in a card, if you can hand it to your postie and say thank you that's even better. They are like the 4th emergency service!

pinkksugarmouse · 28/11/2022 17:33

Well £10 seems to be the going rate and as we have a good postman which clearly isn’t the case for everyone then showing our appreciation seems to be the decent thing to do. And we do support the strikes and I want to show him that we are on his side too. 📮
So yep tenner in a card. Thanks for your opinions. 👍

Our postie(s) are useless, we regularly re-deliver the mail we've received to where it needs to go. We've given it back to the posties a few times only for it to appear again several days later. So, no tip from us other than, perhaps a different (non-delivery) career?

Glad your postie is good, OP.

Our Evri/whatever courier is amazing (Kelvin). We give him money in a card every year.

daisychain01 · 28/11/2022 17:34

Just out of interest how do people tip the binmen.... We'd be broke - there are normally at least 3 men doing the bins and driving the lorry, and another 3-4 doing the recycling and driving the lorry. That's be £70 or more eeek!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/11/2022 17:34

pudseypie, perhaps we have the same postie? Grin

ConfusedGin · 28/11/2022 17:36

My dad was a postie. We used to spend his tips on buying the best tree we could find / fit in the house. I love those memories of going on the tree search every year

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/11/2022 17:36

daisychain01, councils have zero refuse worker absence around Christmas time.. and you can't help but notice them. They're on good wages and have job-and-finish, they're doing ok...

wizzler · 28/11/2022 17:37

I tip my postie. I give him a £5 and tell him to have a drink on me...

BestIsWest · 28/11/2022 17:39

Our postie is amazing. I feel really sorry for him as he has to deliver so many of our parcels on top of letters - two pairs of shoes one day last week.

Jellybean23 · 28/11/2022 17:43

My dad was a postman. The Christmas tips were a godsend to my parents.

We always put money inside a card and hand it to our regular postie. Sometimes, they swap the posties around at Christmas and we get temps doing the delivery so we wait until we see the right one.

We hand it to the driver - in a card. The crew divide it up amongst themselves.
