Gluten free and dairy free dessert for the big day?

Namechangeforthis88 · 27/11/2022 21:16

Looking for suggestions for a dessert for the big day where one of the guests is both gluten and dairy intolerant. It may be a two dessert situation so does not need to be massive. I guarantee nobody cares if there is no Christmas pudding.

Think I asked a few years back for gluten free ideas, did a lovely dessert and found out after we sat down to eat that this guest also dairy intolerant.

You can buy gluten free dairy free jusroll pastry, and I’ve used that to make an Apple strudel before. It’s not particuarly christmassy but it is tasty

Dartmoorcheffy · 27/11/2022 21:22

Pavlova with dairy free whipped cream and fresh berries

Vegan and gluten free ice cream sundaes

Gluten free apple crumble

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 27/11/2022 21:26

What are you wanting to eat?
I’ve made a gluten free Christmas pudding today.

Nigella’s Christmas Rocky Toad works well with gluten free biscuits and vegan “butter” and looks splendid piled up and dusted with icing sugar

There is a recipe for a wreath made out of meringue, ice cream and hot raspberry coulis/sauce in Anja Dunk’s Advent Book which would be easy with Swedish Glacé icecream

I've made these with oat milk and oat cream, delicious , very very decadent.

I bought the pouch of chestnut purée you can get in supermarkets, I think it's unsweetened but oat milk is sweeter than dairy milk. Just double check the brand of oat milk is gluten free some are, some aren't

Cup of Kale website has a vegan chocolate orange mouse which is fantastic.

bathorshower · 27/11/2022 21:38

Chocolate mousse - just eggs and chocolate, dark chocolate works better anyway. Could add orange/lemon/raspberry if you wanted to liven it up, and pretty easy to make (and can be done in advance)

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 27/11/2022 21:42

It's very easy. Just alternate wheat with gluten free flour and milk with dairy free milk. There are so many gluten free vegan recipes these days, that taste fantastic.

Namechangeforthis88 · 27/11/2022 21:44

Wow, some of these sound great. I was thinking something with chestnuts would be good, chocolate and orange sounds good as well.

I do not work for Nigella!

If you use gluten free biscuits this is brilliant for both df and gf diets. Make sure it's the silken tofu to get the soft cheesecake feel. My sister made it with normal tofu and it was very hard

Another good one is this tiramisu. Sounds like it's not great for either diet but apparently you can get gf lady's finger biscuits, though do check they are df as well. I make this with carob as one of my dds are allergic to chocolate and we all loved it vibrantlygfree.com/dairy-free-tiramisu/

loads of good dairy free ice cream out there as well these days, served with meringue and fresh fruit. Yum

You can get vegan condensed milk and on the carnation website there is a recipe for millionaires shortbread. Just use gluten free biscuits. Tastes amazing! You can also make fudge which tastes divine, my dc who can eat everything prefer my homemade vegan fudge!

Rocky road is great and easy to do. Again has been enjoyed by everyone!

I've made chocolate tree bread using gluten free puff pastry and dairy free chocolate spread. Looks great and tastes amazing.

If you are looking for an easy shop bought option. Tesco have the most amazing brownies in their free from finest Christmas range. brownies

Or genius do a gluten and milk free apple pie, delicious served with oatly ice cream.

Nigella Lawson's Clementine cake is dairy and gluten free (either omit the baking powder or make sure you have a gluten free kind)

A few glacéd (candied) orange slices and a drizzle of dairy free chocolate would be a fine addition works well.

Make your own candied orange slices from organic unwaxed oranges. The ready made kind are not much fun.

And/or add chunks of dairy free chocolate to the batter before baking.

It's also delicious on its on or with a few raspberries and a dollop of creme fraîche.

Flooper · 27/11/2022 22:23

poached pears with a (dairy free) caramel sauce

MammaWeasel · 27/11/2022 22:25

Gluten free fruit crumble is yummy! With cinnamon. Serve with dairy free ice cream.

If you put some cloves in it would be more Christmassy. 😊

MammaWeasel · 27/11/2022 22:54

Gf flour does not behave itself , so it's not as simple as just replacing like for gf like. You often need to add xanthan gum to recipes but even then it's rather hit and miss. Really, I'd go for the crumble!!

AdaColeman · 27/11/2022 23:09

Pears poached in Christmas spiced red wine. Make the day before and serve cold, so it's simple on the day.

Rice pudding made with nut milk, served with cherries in liqueur.

A peach, peeled and sliced into a goblet of sweet dessert wine, you could add gold flakes to the wine for a sparkling touch.

AdaColeman · 27/11/2022 23:57

If you were going to serve a dairy free ice or sorbet, you could make it more festive by serving it as a Punch Romaine, serve in a shallow glass dish and pour over a glass of champagne. 🥂🍾

Discussing with DS now as he wants to do the cooking. He's liking the chocolate mousse idea.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

@longtompot THANK YOU! I don't know why it's never occured to me to use coconut cream for a tiramisu - have been musing over Oatly cream/Elmlea soya for a while but that looks much more appetising!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/11/2022 09:10

Delia’s Christmas dried fruit compote - a sort of Christmassy fruit salad - is IMO very nice, doesn’t take long and can be made in advance. Also popular for breakfast the day after, if there’s any left.
