Does anyone do a stocking for themselves?

Hi there, I love small gifts, and really enjoy doing a stocking each year for DS. We never had stockings growing up (tiny violins) and DH declared a few years back that stockings are, in his opinion, just for kids. But part of me really wants to do just a little stocking for myself, with tiny, lovely things.

Sigh. Just leave it at fantasy?

Does anyone else do their own stocking? Please tell me I'm not alone!

Stockings may be, in his opinion, just for kids.

Stockings may be, in my opinion, whoever you wish to do them for. I tend to do them for everyone. I have about 10 empty stockings. Reason being, why would Santa choose to do stockings for just one adult... Wouldn't he have to fill them all?

Yes do a stocking for yourself! I bet you'll receive something you like!!!!

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 26/11/2022 20:27

I do my own (and really treat myself!) but ask DH to put in one small surprise for me.

GreenCat44 · 26/11/2022 20:32

Why did I never think of this?!
I'm doing myself a stocking this year, thanks OP 👍

misssunshine4040 · 26/11/2022 20:33

I absolutely agree with spoiling yourself and buying yourself gifts, but what's the point of the stocking if you already know what's inside?
Does it not defeat the purpose?

Christmasmarket · 26/11/2022 20:38

This is such a lovely idea.

I would have

A book
Comfy socks
A nice pen
Mascara
Chocolate
Something from Lush
Some Olaplex

I think you should absolutely go for it op.

SparklyMistleToes · 26/11/2022 20:46

Do it OP!!

I grew up in a house where everyone got a stocking. After all why would santa only do stockings for the children? My mum often did her own because my dad was rubbish at filling hers.

Now in my own house we still do stockings for everyone. I fill my husband's and the children's and he fills mine. He doesn't love stockings so he does a bit of a shit job of it, so I will often buy a few little things to put in mine as well.

Lipgloss
Hand cream
Nice pair of gloves
Fancy chocolates
Mini bottles of wine
Nice pens
Eye liners

Stuff like that. I love it ☺️

ooohaaaahjustalittlebit · 26/11/2022 20:46

Yes. DH and I have both done this for years. We do the kids ones together, then we each buy our own. So much easier than trying to guess what he'd like. We wrap each other's in tissue paper! Each year as I open up the gifts I say oh look, it's exactly what I wanted😆

PartnersInCrime · 26/11/2022 20:53

Yes! Stockings not a thing where I grew up so I do them for all of us and the kids have always known I do them. FC brings one big present they have asked for from a list of a few requests.

ThatshallotBaby · 26/11/2022 21:22

Yes I do.
I get things like talcum powder with a puff in a round box Grin
Things I really really don’t need or can’t justify. I’m so stingy with myself during the year, and so I just think sod it.
Last year I got myself some Aromatherapy Associates, problem is they were so expensive I don’t use them! Ridiculous.
I also buy myself a new book, or two rather than trawling the charity shops.
Silk underwear
Korres body lotion
Some scent samples
And nice socks, bamboo or wool.
I find TKMaxx very handy for all stocking purchases.
Enjoy your stocking @Leviosa Smile

Mercedesbenz2022 · 26/11/2022 21:34

@ThatshallotBaby
where do you get the talc with the puff ?
I remember my Nan having one years ago and to me it was the height of glamour

Our mum always did the loveliest stockings - and still does! They are the highlight of Christmas for everyone. Carefully equal numbers of beautifully wrapped gifts in a different colour of tissue paper for each person, and in stockings made by mum from offcuts.

These days adult children get a Bridgewater mug, a decoration, a few books, biscuit cutters or other kitchen things, little miniatures and lovely chocolates, cashmere fingerless gloves... and always a tangerine, a walnut and a chocolate coin in the toe.

The contents of mum's stocking may not be a surprise, but she puts as much into it as she does for anyone else.

Our Christmas tradition is now that we open the stockings together late morning or early afternoon, and over some homemade mincepies and a glass of champagne. Other presents are done after a very late lunch or even dinner.

I'm now carefully stockpiling little gifts - same budget, same traditions - for my children. Mum made the stockings so they too have one each to treasure, and I guess we'll start doing two rounds. One for babies at home in the morning, and the second where it has always been by the fire in my parents' house. ❤

@Mercedesbenz2022
I know!!
Best thing ever Grin
It was TKMaxx
I think it’s Woods of Windsor.

KatherineofGaunt · 26/11/2022 21:45

I do, but only because I do one for DH and one for DS, but DH doesn't do one for me. So I make my own. I use the 'Something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read' rule for us all.

leafblowaway · 26/11/2022 21:53

So what constitutes a kid in his eyes? Until your son hits 18? Until he moves out? Or a stocking forever at your house even when your son is 30?

We never had stockings when I was a child, Dh had them at his. We made it our tradition together that Father Christmas fills the stockings. Every Christmas eve my teenage sons hang up their stockings for Father Christmas. Every Christmas morning when they come to open them, they are full. My MIL had beautiful stockings at her house for my sons, not from Father Christmas but just a lovely tradition to carry on with small gifts.

I don't have to fill a stocking myself as Dh is lovely and pays attention to what I say I like, or I take a photo and send it to him and amazingly it gets wrapped up and given to me. He is incredibly thoughtful, I usually get some foot cream that he lovingly slathers on my feet complete with massage. Even Ds1 wrote down something I said I wanted when he was about 15 and then told Dh so it was a lovely surprise to open that on Christmas morning.

Definitely treat yourself. I wonder if your Dh says stockings are only for children as it makes his life easier. Does he do any of the Christmas shopping for your son? Dh loves shopping especially for the children.

Lcb123 · 26/11/2022 21:57

I do agree with your DP. Haven’t had a stocking since I was child - I’d rather have a decent big present. But if it makes you happy, do it!

CrapBucket · 26/11/2022 22:03

Santa only fills children's stockings in my house. So when the DC were small I wouldn't have done myself a stocking. They are older teens now so actually I could do one for myself, but I am planning to just get myself a few treats for under the tree.

NotToBeShaked · 26/11/2022 22:11

My friend and I swap stockings when we were single parents. We still do it!

neighboursmustliveon · 27/11/2022 07:55

Stockings are my favourite part of Christmas! My dh does mine, although he doesn't really 'get' stockings so generally just puts in the presents that fit, rather than buying specific presents for my stocking.

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 27/11/2022 08:16

Myself and my best friend (women in their 40's 😂) we do a stocking for each other and our partners supply the budget!!! As we know what each other would like and saves them a job; Stocking budget is £50 but usually get some nice bits in there

mam0918 · 27/11/2022 11:59

We didnt really grow up with them either.

I started doing them when DS was born, I make them for everyone myself included.

I got the royal essence snow fairy and pot of gold this year, will add sweets and 1 or 2 other things that I havent bought yet.

mam0918 · 27/11/2022 12:05

I also dont understand the 'just for kids' or 'from father christmas' thing.

Stockings are a factual thing in memory of St. Nick not from 'father christmas' and in reality St. Nick only actually did it for adult unmarried women (hense the term stocking, it was actual womens stocking hung on the drying line that he would leave money in) so that they could afford to pay doweries and get better lives for themselves.

So the idea that its 'just for kids' is wierd as thats not even remotely close to the true tradition.

YuliaJollyberry · 27/11/2022 13:08

I don’t do my own but totally would if there was only me to do it.
I spent a very pleasant couple of hours recently virtually overstuffing one for myself (when I should have been looking at gifts for others) and enjoyed it just as much as I enjoy doing them for others which surprised me (even though I didn’t buy any of it). We run with a formula so we all get things in similar categories. Upgraded practical items, edibles, usable and doable things.

SuffolkUnicorn · 27/11/2022 14:37

i do
we never had them as children either I do my Ds one he’s 7

I put in treats I wouldnt normally have and things like shower gel socks etc

alfagirl73 · 27/11/2022 15:00

I do one for myself (or I wouldn't get anything at all!) - just put a few lovely things in that I'd like - and I open them while I'm having the lush breakfast I've got planned for myself.

ErinAndTonic · 27/11/2022 16:22

I'm tempted to do this as my partner and I don't do stockings anymore.

If you do yourself one, do you wrap up what you put in it?
