We're not having Christmas lunch this year.

We've decided on a lavish Christmas brunch, long walk, then dinner in evening.

Give me your most decadent breakfast/brunch that won't destroy the kitchen but will feel special.

This is the recipe 😋

TheRookie · 23/11/2022 21:08

I'm always shocked at the amount of people who don't eat Christmas breakfast! I love breakfast to much forgo a delicious Christmas one!!!!

  • seeded bread, mashed avocado with sea salt, drizzle of hot sauce, bacon, fried egg 🫶🏻
  • sesame seed bagel, good cream cheese, and crispy bacon
  • 'Dishoom' breakfast - warm naan, sliced avo, crispy fried egg, bacon, aubergine pickle and mango chutney with sliced chilli's and crushed poppadom over the top
  • full Scottish breakfast with white toast and butter

Are my usual options. I always have a selection of pastries, peanut butter, honey, Nutella, jams, coffee, clementine juice, prosecco available. Breakfast is as important as Christmas lunch! Although we don't usually eat lunch until 5 and have breakfast at 9/10!!

Whoever suggested the cinnamon buns with double cream, saw this on someone's YouTube channel and itsnon my list for this year. Need to practice it first 😁😁😁

TheRookie · 23/11/2022 21:09

Forgot to add granola, fill fat Greek yogurt, honey and berries to my always available list. And chocolate cereal for the kkds!

WonderingWanda · 23/11/2022 21:35

I love eggs Bennedict and also Almond Croissants, would also have a few glasses of bucks fizz.

GettingStuffed · 23/11/2022 21:36

The ultimate breakfast we've ever had was in Tallinn, smoked sturgeon, it was smoked salmon on ordinary days, boiled or scrambled eggs, yogurt, bacon, cold meats- ham, salami etc, then pastries or toast.

For Christmas day breakfast here we have either smoked salmon or bacon with scrambled eggs and either bucks fizz, orange juice or cava depending on who's drinking what (fussy kids)

TwinsAndTiramisu · 23/11/2022 21:47

Have done some really nice breakfasts, which all tend to be quite rich. Variations on Benedicts, salmon, eggs etc.

Found that this, plus festive snacks, lunch, wine, just led to feeling stuffed and lethargic.

Last year, we did a huge fruit platter, with greek yoghurt, honey, bake at home pain au chocolat and almond croissants, and it was delicious, and looked very decadent all set up. We made quite a thing of it, prepped, arranged and sealed in the fridge the night before, then out in the morning to come to room temperature as we are opening stockings. It sounds a rather dull breakfast but it looked like the whole table was bejewelled with all the different colours and berries. Left us feeling really quite good and ready for the day instead of heavy tums from the start.

Smoked Salmon and Shirako on a home made brown bread with a glass of Krug Grand Cuvée

Sourdough thickly sliced and cooked in the grill or on a griddle pan, topped with sautéed spinach cooked with lots of butter, then smoked salmon then cream cheese. It's seriously good.

Otherwise sourdough prepared as above topped with scalloped sautéed in butter, lemon zest and black pepper, then add the juice of the lemon and chopped parsley.

I'm a seafood fan and not an egg fan!

GrouchyKiwi · 23/11/2022 22:36

Before children I'd do brunch for friends quite regularly.

We'd have smoked salmon, homemade bread, scrambled eggs, various fruits.

Or Ultimate French Toast - properly done with cinnamon in the custardy mix, sugar to sprinkle on, a berry sauce, fresh berries, bacon, other fruit.

Eggs Benedict is wonderful, of course, and you don't even have to make the sauce yourself. The jars are usually pretty good, IME.

And always champagne. I don't like it usually, but it's necessary for a proper brunch.

GrouchyKiwi · 23/11/2022 22:38

Asparagus Mornay is one of my Mum's favourites. It makes for an excellent decadent breakfast. You definitely need good orange juice with it to cut the richness.

I'd like to know more about this please! Are the buns tightly placed? Single cream? How does it work?

I’ve seen a couple of recipes online but I intend researching these exact questions extensively on Saturday morning and I’ll report back!

Havehope21 · 24/11/2022 17:00

How many are there of you? I would offer sweet and savoury options...

Sweet -
Warm croissants with a nice selection of jams/conserves (e.g. the Bonne Mamman ones), butter (a real nice yellow one) and gianduja chocolate spread (made will a tonne of hazelnuts - tastes amazing)
OR
cinnamon swirls / chelsea buns - make the up until the baking part the night before, bake in the morning

Savoury -
Eggs benedict / florentine / royale - depending on what you eat, finished with truffle
Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on nice toast - with truffle, if wished

others have a full english or bacon sandwich but personally I wouldn't like this at Christmas.

Havehope21 · 24/11/2022 17:01

@Whatsleftnow can't see the whole chain but if you are talking about cinnamon buns / chelsea buns, I grease an 8 or 9 inch round cake tin and place them in that (one in the centre, the rest round the edge), you get a beautiful shape and can tear them apart.

Waitrose all butter muffins, toasted, buttered and topped with spinach, smoked salmon, poached duck eggs and hollandaise.

Growing up we always had full English breakfast followed by selection boxes!

Dinner about 4 ish

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/11/2022 17:37

I have no suggestions as we have Christmas Tree shaped crumpets 🤣(the joys of a pre-schooler) but honestly, reading this thread has been so much fun for me, all of your breakfast/brunches sound amazing 😍

faffadoodledo · 24/11/2022 17:43

We always have a stack of pancakes with multiple choice of toppings: maple syrup, sugar and lemon, grated chocolate and squirty cream (it's the only time we ever buy squirty cream). DD is vegan so we do vegan pancakes too. And buck's fizz
I must say though I'm loving this thread for new ideas.
We're not doing roast this year. We're doing an Ottolenghi style array of different dishes.

wendywoopywoo222 · 24/11/2022 17:45

If we're having an evening Christmas dinner we have cheese, crackers and pickles for breakfast. Love it.

Ooh great idea. Thanks for the tip.

Dreamwhisper · 24/11/2022 22:16

I usually don't eat a meal on Xmas morning and make the DCs and DP frozen pastries and chocolate milk or juice and coffee.

This year I'm eyeing up Tesco's food to order Brunch - they've got Emmenthal and smoked ham croissants, and a big pastry star thing, toffee and pecan I think! I would serve with some fresh fruit, and crudites and baked cheese for dipping, for a very indulgent brunch Smile

BuryingAcorns · 24/11/2022 22:23

Bircher muesli with greek yoghurt and loads of fresh berries
Bucks fizz with freshly squeezed orange juice
Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon with wilted baby spinach, baby plum tomatoes and garlic butter mushrooms
Loads of fresh coffee with hot frothed milk or earl grey tea

I've never had all that for Christmas Day btw. Just fantasising Grin

Dreamwhisper · 24/11/2022 22:23

Oh and another brunch we love but do a bit too regularly for Christmas, is brioche loaf French toast. Slice the brioche really thick and add vanilla to the egg mix, liberally butter the pan. Fry til crispy and golden brown in some spots, top with smoked bacon and drizzle in maple syrup. Serve with fresh strawberries.

nocoolnamesleft · 24/11/2022 22:26

Eggs Benedict. Made with duck eggs. And yes, duck eggs far surpass hen eggs.
