If you’ve bought 15+ gifts for your child/ren where are you from?

I have a theory that different parts of the UK view giving Christmas gifts differently (based solely on anecdotes and experience, so very scientific).

I’m from the Scottish central belt and don’t know anyone, regardless of income (in fact more so for working class families), who gift less than 12/15+ presents to their children, nor do any of the NI parents I know.

Conversely my experience of English families (almost exclusively on here) is that there’s competitive minimal gifting regardless of financial situation.

Is it different traditions across the nations?

Prove or disprove my very scientific theory.

(Apologies to the Welsh, I have no experience but am happy to be informed)

Mine will get around that. I'm from West Yorkshire.

Smartiepants79 · 21/11/2022 12:48

Are you counting all the little things like chocolates and hair bobbles and some shower gel?
My kids get well over 20 things to unwrap but many of them have cost only a couple of pounds.
We come from a mix of north west and south east England.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/11/2022 12:49

DH, from Yorkshire, is the "wrap up essentials" sort. As are his parents.

My mother is the shopaholic sort... originally from Scotland. But grew up with very frugal post war patents and its a reaction to that.

I'm the trying to control everyone person. I grew up in London...

CinderellaFant · 21/11/2022 12:50

I'm from NI- everyone I know will be giving their children huge piles of presents!

AmberGer · 21/11/2022 12:53

Midlands here. I buy loads of tat presents for my two. At least 15 if not more. I like their present sacks to be full, preferably overflowing with gifts.
Their eyes light up when they see all their gifts 😍
They also have a little stocking in their bedroom, which they bring in and open on our bed on Christmas morning, full of nick nacks, chocolate, sweets, little puzzles/fidget toys etc. Nothing expensive.
In total I spend around £500 all in.

PinkyU · 21/11/2022 12:55

No, gifts like toothbrushes, stocking fillers aren’t counted in that (underplayed) total.

I lived in London 20 years now Scotland but from a frugal middle class family. Def don’t do 15-20 presents! This year my little girl is getting a second hand bike (selling her old one and the money will go toward the ‘new’ one), a dolly (proper one like a baby rather than rag doll type) and some outfits for it. That’s from us. Then she will have a present from each of my three siblings and two sets of grandparents so maybe 5 more presents. She’ll have a stocking. And maybe something else from us under the tree like a onesie/colouring or sticker book/craft set etc.

Athenen0ctua · 21/11/2022 12:58

The only competitive giving I've noticed is trying to give the most.

VioletCreams · 21/11/2022 12:58

I am from North East Scotland and my son will have about that amount. As did I 40 years ago.

TabithaTittlemouse · 21/11/2022 13:00

I don’t really count so don’t know if I prove your theory right or wrong!

TabithaTittlemouse · 21/11/2022 13:00

At a guess maybe ten?

Relocatiorelocation · 21/11/2022 13:00

Welsh here, we all love presents, hundreds of them. We've not got much time for the "something you need, something to read blah blah". All kids get poilt rotten, I don't know a single person who is stingy with presents.

AriettyHomily · 21/11/2022 13:00

I wouldn't want to count. They get a main present, some other bits, pjs, a stocking which has loads of things in but not expensive. If you count everything probably over 40.

AriettyHomily · 21/11/2022 13:01

oops, NI but live in London

NuffSaidSam · 21/11/2022 13:05

I'm from London and, excluding stocking presents, didn't get more than 5 or 6 presents from my parents.

I wouldn't give more than 5 or 6 (excluding stocking) to my DC.

I know people who will do similar, but I also know people who will do less and people who will do 12-15 and even 30+, so a mixed bag here I would say.

BluOcty · 21/11/2022 13:05

Mine will get x10 little things, like sweets, wooden brainteaser, whooppee cushion. But only 1-3 main presents.

I'm an eco minimalist (or trying to be) so the thought of x40 presents each for two kids brings me out in a cold sweat.

LisaJool · 21/11/2022 13:06

I was a CA in a very economically diverse school. IME there is a social class correlation, the lower income families spent much more at Christmas "to see the look on their faces" even if it meant getting into debt. It wasn't unusual for them to get a big present such as PS4 and several other fairly big presents too, aswell as lots of little things, all wrapped up. The more MC children got a lot less, with a lot less fuss.
I remember one of the mums joking with me saying that you could always tell the families on benefits as they had the biggest birthday parties and invited the whole class (she was on benefits herself). I definitely found that to be the general trend, the more MC children maybe took 3 or 4 friends out to a meal as their party.

zaffa · 21/11/2022 13:07

I'm from another country all together (although my dad is Scottish). We got about 10-15 presents but that included all the tiny things like notepads and hair clips (also we didn't do stockings and no one I know did). We would get big bags of gifts though. However only one main present.
DSS (lives with us) gets about 10 plus and stocking but now he's a teen we give him mostly cash and about five small gifts.
DD is almost three and she probably has about five and a stocking and even that i think is too much (but she is a toddler and wants to play with her present when she opens it so it takes forever to open presents!)
I now live in the south east

Queeniewag · 21/11/2022 13:11

I’m in south west London and my kids will get a big stocking and large sack overflowing with gifts from Santa and then about about 10-15 gifts from us under the tree plus grandparents etc on top. I love Christmas and I love seeing my kids faces when they come down in the morning.

NCFT0922 · 21/11/2022 13:13

Yorkshire. Mine get quite a lot, I would say probably 13 each. I get them all the same amount.
Not including what I consider stocking fillers; hair accessories, colouring / sticker books, chocolate & sweets etc
Then they have a a sack each which has pyjamas, socks, slippers & a dressing gown.
Actual proper presents probably around 12/13.

Cornelious · 21/11/2022 13:17

In my experience, working class people and those on lower incomes actually buy the most presents for their dc. However a lot of this is plastic tat (from what I've seen online) and it's more about quantity than quality. When I lived in a very MC area the parents there bought much less and openly talked about second hand bargains they'd got. I think the more money you have the less you have to 'prove'.

My dc11 will prob get 10-15 presents however as she gets older the less she gets (as she wants more expensive things).

WakingUpDistress · 21/11/2022 13:17

DH, from Yorkshire, is the "wrap up essentials" sort. As are his parents.

😂😂
DH is from Yorkshire too. He is exactly like that.

Geneticsbunny · 21/11/2022 13:17

I am from yorkshire and we just do one or two gifts each from us and from Santa, plus a stocking full of random bits. I have to admit that I think the previous poster who mentioned middle Vs working class might be right though? I wouldn't get loads of gifts for my kids because I don't want them to grow up feeling entitled and I don't want their friends, some of whom and less well off than us, to feel upset.

Notanotherone6 · 21/11/2022 13:19

West Yorkshire. My kids will each get around 20 presents in a sack, plus a stocking full of small items. Any less and their sacks look pathetic.

samstownsunset · 21/11/2022 13:20

5 each plus an Xmas eve box (first year doing these).

I couldn't think of 15 things each that they'd want unless I bulked it out with a load of tat.
Quality not quantity. I'm English.
