Stocking fillers ideas for mum?

Stockingstuffer · 18/11/2022 21:16

I’m making a stocking for my mum this year. I’m 19 & on a student budget so nothing too expensive but would love to fill it with little bits that she’d like. She used to make stockings for me and my brother every year when we were little, so think she would love to get one back! She’s 52.

She loves make up & beauty, and mumsnet is where she gets all her recommendations, so hoping you’ll be able to recommend things to me!

What would you love to see in a stocking from your DD?

Your lucky mum! I've never had a stocking, but if I did: bubble bath, some paperwhite narcissus bulbs that I could plant, a picture of you because I do like real photos and sparkly nail polish to wear at Christmas.

ThatshallotBaby · 18/11/2022 21:32

I have a 20 yr old student dd and I’m 54 Grin
So I fit the brief
I'd like a book please. Don’t mind if it’s second hand. A Christmas mystery would be nice.
Some fluffy socks. I like mens ones from TKMaxx, with wool.
green and blacks milk chocolate.
I use soap. So a nice creamy moisturising soap.
And I'd also like everything on @strawberriesarenot list!

BeKindToYourMind · 18/11/2022 21:39

She loves make up & beauty

Are you ever in any of the big department stores? I'm sure in some of them you can get little freebie testers, could get some of those and wrap them all together?

She might find a product/perfume she really likes, that she'd treat herself to (or if she mentions liking something you could bear it in mind for a birthday gift!)

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/11/2022 21:39

You're very thoughtful, your Mum is going to love it!

Not sure if you only want beauty suggestions, here's a mix incase you want to vary things.
Small Micellar water if she travels
Cotton wool pad
Face mask
Foot mask
Carmex
Tube of Nivea soft cream (I always travel with this as does for face/hand/body cream)

Nail varnish remover
Trolley coin
Scratch card
Chocolate!
Can of G&T/ similar
Unusual herbs/spices
A book (charity shops are your friend, you might pick up some other things there too)
Christmas decoration
Socks
Christmas Earrings or brooch

AdaColeman · 18/11/2022 21:42

Christmasy nail varnish
Lip balm
Emery boards
Cotton buds
Hand cream
Fun Christmasy earrings
Miniature Baileys & glass
Tin of ready mixed cocktail
Small box of chocolates
Christmas biscuits

NoDairyNoProblem · 18/11/2022 21:43

Oh aren’t you just lovely @Stockingstuffer 🥰.

Some wonderful suggestions so far.

Totes fluffy socks under £2 in home bargains.
2nd hand books always appreciated.
A bar of my favourite chocolate.
Nail/cuticle oil.
Face mask or eye mask.

Topbird29 · 18/11/2022 21:44

Me and DH do stocking, and if mum here she gets one too. I put in a little premix tin of g & t or mini prosecco, some chocs / mini lindt reindeer, small nail varnish or handcream, sometimes a book. And as long as she gets a Terry's chocolate orange she is happy. So just little treats. And bigger present later in the day.

Floralnomad · 18/11/2022 21:46

If she takes any medication a small enamelled pill pot would be nice .

EvelynBeatrice · 18/11/2022 21:52

Next does little handbag sized perfume bottles for five pounds. Enchantment is a lovely chypre woody fragrance and Summer Sun is a dupe for Estée Lauder’s Bronze Goddess. You can also often pick up bargain cosmetics, gloves, socks , earrings etc in TK Maxx or the discount chemists - Bodycare, Semichem and so on are great for lip salve, towelling face cloths etc. A lovely idea - lucky mum.

Smogtopia · 18/11/2022 22:12

Oooh you've inspired me to do one for my Mum too!
Scratchcard
Mid price chocolate bar like Lindt or one of the little 6 pack truffles from hotel chocolat
Mini bottle of red or white wine depending on her preferences
Bath salts
Lip balms
Maybe try your luck in one of the department stores and see if any of the counters have any sample sachets you could throw in?
Nail cuticle oil
I love the garnier tissue masks but the 'plastic' means I only have them as a very rare treat
Soap from tkmaxx

I'm 54 my dd is 18.
The best present I ever got from my dd is a card where she wrote what I mean to her and how much she loves and appreciates me.
So definitely include that in your stocking.
You sound absolutely lovely xxx❤️

Stockingstuffer · 18/11/2022 22:18

Thank you so much everyone for your ideas so far, I can see why my mum likes it so much on here, you are all lovely x

dcadmamagain · 18/11/2022 22:36

Is there anything that was a tradition in stockings she gave you eg chocolate coins, satsuma? If so maybe return the tradition

Aixellency · 18/11/2022 22:44

Could you stretch to a beauty advent calendar or gift box? The type where the individual items would cost much more to buy separately? (Cult Beauty have several at different prices.) Splendid stocking presents if at least some of the things are luxurious or things she wants to try.

Socks, according to your budget!

Book or magazine (The Gentlewoman, for instance.)

Definitely drink!

That pretty much covers the ‘something to wear, read, eat, need’ mantra.

Even on a budget I’d err on the side of quality. Don’t waste your money on piles of tat that’ll linger in a cupboard all next year.

(My mother is decades older than yours. We all still exchange stockings - as far as distance allows. They’re the best part of Christmas gifting!)

Mostlygrumpy · 18/11/2022 23:00

First of all you are so thoughtful that's a lovely idea. I'm sure you've had lots of ideas already but maybe Christmas fudge, some samples of perfume, furry socks, lip balm, miniature gin/vodka, bath bomb x

Aixellency · 18/11/2022 23:01

I do mean something lovely, not Boots 241!

You could order tiny samples of really amazing perfumes from Les Senteurs or Bloom Perfumery. (Maybe £5 or £6 for a ml.)

Postcards or tiny prints from a gallery?

Oh! If she doesn’t subscribe already how about a month or two of the National Theatre at Home? One month of streaming would be £9.99. Then you could watch together - or separately.

Mostlygrumpy · 18/11/2022 23:11

I now want to make up 2 baskets for my Mum and MIL, these suggestions are lovely

Catonlapfireon · 19/11/2022 00:22

Oh I’d love a box of my favourite herbal tea (one of the fancier ones) or a mixed box of pukka tea.
Love the idea of a secondhand book and the idea of a photo of the two of you.
Anything cosy is a winner I think, so socks, gloves etc. Maybe magazine she likes or a small box of fancy chocolates?

jocktamsonsbairn · 19/11/2022 06:17

What a lovely thing to do! You could go onto Sephora and join their beauty box subscription- you then get to choose 5 products from a large choice of very good brands for your first box. Don't click on choices too soon - look at all 5 pages before choosing. You will get those for 2.95. Then make sure you cancel the subscription!
Keep an eye out on the the bargain thread - the current one is Thread 12 the one with the frosted tits. You will get lots of bargain ideas there. Although of you do get her the outlet Turtle Dives fingerless cashmere gloves she'll know you've been on Mumsnet!!
I'm sane age as your mum and would love this! As others have said, think if the traditional things she puts in yours as well as maybe a mini bottle of Prosecco and carton of orange juice for a Christmas morning Buck's Fizz? Some bubble bath, fluffy socks etc.

Talapia · 19/11/2022 06:44

That's really lovely. I wouldn't expect too much as I'd know you're on a budget.
Canned cocktail
Chocolate of some kind.
An essential type of make up . I like urban decay but wouldn't expect that from my student DC. I'd be happy with my boots eyeliner.
Some nice thermal socks
Gloves
Bookmark
Magazine
Hair accessories

Good luck

TwiceTwiceBaby · 19/11/2022 07:19

A hair turban
Silk/satin pillowcase
Small bar/box of really nice chocolate (would rather have less of something special than a bigger cheaper version iyswim)
A "good" mug (this is how my mum refers to her favourites as apparently they keep her tea warm longer and are comfortable to hold 😆)
An apron

CatWithARabbit · 19/11/2022 08:00

What a lovely idea ! Definitely a photo of you/the two of you. Lip balm, hand cream, bar of favorite chocolate, reed diffuser (Aldi's are lovely and only £3), satsuma !

8dayweek · 19/11/2022 11:06

Have a scour of TK Maxx for some bargains (I managed to find a Nuxe Body Wash for £4 for my Mum's stocking) and keep an eye on Tenner Tuesday at Boots.

Last year I managed to get a nice trial set from Pai for P&P only and travel sized eye cream (with lots of free samples thrown in) for less than £10 from Strivectin under one of their flash sales.

I've found bargains in the past on Elizabeth Arden and Look Fantastic too. If you know someone with a Beauty Pie subscription you may be able to pick up a few bits from there too.

Mol1628 · 19/11/2022 11:10

does she like Molton brown? John Lewis have it on sale at the moment. I’ve just bought the cracker gift set for my mum. Quality rather than quantity is definitely favoured here.

Comedycook · 19/11/2022 11:14

Fluffy socks
Nice mug
Lipstick
Bubble bath
A novel
Face mask
Mini perfume
