Stocking fillers ideas for mum?

Stockingstuffer · 18/11/2022 21:16

I’m making a stocking for my mum this year. I’m 19 & on a student budget so nothing too expensive but would love to fill it with little bits that she’d like. She used to make stockings for me and my brother every year when we were little, so think she would love to get one back! She’s 52.

She loves make up & beauty, and mumsnet is where she gets all her recommendations, so hoping you’ll be able to recommend things to me!

What would you love to see in a stocking from your DD?

Deodorant
face wipes
razors
hair bands
cotton pads
mini Xmas pudding
washbag
chocolate orange
chocolate coins
face mask
dvd
bubble bath
calendar
pens
adult colouring book
something stupid

Aixellency · 19/11/2022 15:52

Deodorant? Deodorant??

And cotton pads. And razors.

As gifts?

Oh! You’re having a laugh.

Ha ha ha. Hmm

Whatwherewherewhat · 19/11/2022 17:43

Ooh this is me too, in fact my DDs often do put together a little stocking for me.

Tiny box of fancy chocolates
Tinted lip balm
Lovely mini shower gel
Earrings
Face masque
Cosy socks
Nail varnish
Fingerless gloves
Candle

Anything that shows that they've thought of me, it means so much.
And they're pretty good because they have had many years of receiving stockings, still going on in fact 😊

BatshitCrazyWoman · 19/11/2022 18:01

My son does this for me, and I used to for my Mum. I'm in my late 50s. I agree, handcream (always used to get handcream for my Mum), chocolate or whatever sweet treat she likes (Turkish delight - not the chocolate stuff - is mine), nail polish, earrings (not novelty Christmas ones unless you know your Mum would like them), I agree with others about samples, and have a good poke about in TK Maxx - lovely soap (I'm a soap lover!) and nice little bits and pieces.

WellTidy · 19/11/2022 18:23

hand cream - occitane does 30ml size for £8 and the 20% Shea one is amazing. if you’d prefer to spend less, always happy with aveeno

a sheet mask, and of the Garnier ones

a can of espresso martini or a flavoured gin and tonic

a pen

some chocolates - whatever you can afford! Cadburys absolutely fine, Lindt is a step up, the M&S champagne truffles in a round box for £5 or £6 are amazing

bubble bath - again, whatever is in budget! If you’re splashing out then the Rituals Sakura 500ml one for £15 is absolutely gorgeous but the imperial leather creamy colour one for about £3 is really lovely

cuticle oil

nail strengthener by Sally Hansen

dr paw paw lip balm

Hair accessories (if she uses them)

WellTidy · 19/11/2022 18:24

Soap too, I’ve always used bar soap and TK Maxx does a brilliant selection

Yankee candles does really small ones for a few pounds. I am not a Yankee fan normally, but I like Christmas Eve, Snow In Love and (randomly!) wedding day

BeaLola · 19/11/2022 18:34

You sound super lovely - I'm a couple of years older than your Mum and love lots of the suggestions already made.
Bear in mind your budget could you add a handwritten note about I love you Mum because ..... or a favourite/funny memory
Or a small diary where you have randomly written small comments throughout the year ?
Definitely keep an eye on the bargain thread as I'm sure sone further great deals will be on there over next few weeks

DelphiniumBlue · 19/11/2022 18:39

Burts Bees tinted lip balm I've got a few of these and keep them in various coat pockets.
Aldi's No.11 candle - really lovely and also cheap. They don't always have it though. Nicer than Jo Malone and a tenth of the price.
Wristwarmers .. if you can knot or crochet you could make some, but there are plenty in the shops and its the sort of thing you find in christmas markets.
Books - like a PP said, could be secondhand. You know the sort of thing she'll like.
A new mug- you can get nice ones in supermarkets for under a fiver, you could fill it with chocolates/sweets.
I love new stationery, particularly pens. Uniball ones flow well.
Coffee bags - my son got me some from New Kings Coffee, they are delicious.

Luckydog7 · 19/11/2022 18:50

Haha I did this for my mum at your age and have been meaning to do the sane again soon (I'm 35 now)

I put in

A left handed spatula
Her favorite chocolate (choc orange)
Fancy soap.
Tall candles for the table
Earing that I changed to clips myself
A funny book (I think it was funny street signs, badly translated instructions )
Incense
Bamboo socks.

The things she loves the most now is the personal things that only her children can get her, so in my case photos of her grandchildren in a lovely printed book.

Could you do a lovely portrait of the two of you or all her children together if you have sibling? My dads most prize possession is a photo of his 4 children. There is a 20 year age range so not often together.

Leeds2 · 19/11/2022 20:12

An individual Christmas biscuit, eg one that looks like a Christmas pudding or a reindeer. Get them in places like Costa, but I am guessing that the supermarkets will do a cheaper version.
A Christmas bath bomb. I know that Lush do loads, not sure about Superdrug.
Pocket pack of Christmas tissues - Boots do them every year!
Body spray aerosol.

Aixellency · 19/11/2022 21:17

But it’s her mother - an adult woman, not a tween child …

Confused
CaronPoivre · 19/11/2022 21:20

She won't mind - she'll be delighted youge bothered but not want you to spend too much.

Lip balm. A magazine. Nail polish. Shampoo. Soap. Tights or socks. Chocolate. Nail file.

Thanks everyone for your help!! Stocking is all finished, just waiting on one or two bits to come in the post! Decided to go for a make up bag instead of a stocking too, seemed a bit more practical! Can’t wait to give it to her!

You sound delightful and I am sure your Mum will love it - Merry Christmas to you both

How lovely of you. I've never had a stocking as an adult and would be thrilled to get one from the DCs (who are a bit younger). I'm 50. What wouldn't make me happy though would be if my student DD spent too much!
Perfume and scented stuff I find really personal and prefer to choose myself.

I would love any of the below (not everything, just a few bits):
Anything handmade, maybe an ornament for the Christmas tree
A (small, so it fits the stocking) picture frame with a pic of DD, or both of us together
Fluffy socks
Shower gel/cream for dry skin (NIvea or Dove)
A pretty pen + small notebook (I always carry one), Wilko stationery is cute & good value
Dito beauty stuff; Wilko is good value and their own brand primers really good!
Rubber mat thingy with suction cups to help wash makeup brushes (wilko)
Cute sticky notes/post-it type
A funky nail varnish
A book (charity shop is fine), Agatha Christie's Christmas short stories hold up well!
Cute case for my reading glasses
Gloves or mittens
Small pack of Haribo or fruit Mentos (for the handbag : )
Small cute box for pills/medications for handbag/travelling
Cocktail can (G&T or anything from M&S)
One of those soft big hairbands for when you do makeup/skincare
Decent shower cap (for travelling), not too small, Superdrug's is OK

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 30/11/2022 21:55

Sorry, posted before getting to the end, I see you're all done! Lovely. I would LOVE a makeup bag.

Theoldwoman · 30/11/2022 22:12

I’m 52 also with a 19 DD. I would love anything but a few ideas are:

Face mask
Nice bar of soap
Chocolates
Hot Chocolate sachets
Novel (2nd hand is better)
Bath bomb
Nice pen
