A private chef as a Christmas gift - yay or nay

Want to get Mum and Dad something a bit different this year. She has countless spa trips with her pals.

They love to travel but they have a motor home so I think a hotel voucher would be wasted on them.

I wondered whether another option would be to pay for a private chef to come to the house to cook for them and maybe 4 of their friends (so my parents and two other couples). It does mean that their Xmas gift is basically "shared" with friends though and also it's kind of over in an evening.

Would you prefer a hotel voucher or theatre tickets instead of a private chef? I just thought it was kind of unusual?! Thoughts appreciated

I think it's a great idea.

MolesOnPoles · 18/11/2022 20:36

Sounds amazing!

AgnesNaismith · 18/11/2022 20:38

That’s so thoughtful, sounds lovely

NuffSaidSam · 18/11/2022 20:39

If they're foodies then it sounds fabulous.

BeyondMyWits · 18/11/2022 20:39

Oh, god no, I'd be mortified if someone else cooked in my kitchen. I'd worry the oven wasn't clean enough etc.

Sparkletastic · 18/11/2022 20:48

I'd hate that and wouldn't relax. Voucher for a Michelin starred restaurant would surely be well received by anyone though.

Protegemo1 · 21/11/2022 00:35

We were given a voucher for yhangry - was really great, we got to choose a menu to suit us from the options, really generous portions so lots of yummy left overs.felt a little weird at first especially in our tiny flat but would defo recommend yhangry.com

BlackberryCat · 21/11/2022 00:37

I’d hate it but you know your parents. Why not just ask them?

Hawkins001 · 21/11/2022 00:41

If I could contribute to food ideas then mmmmmmmm

pizzaHeart · 21/11/2022 00:42

Voucher to the restaurant or theatre tickets. I think presents should be hassle free whereas this one is not - you have basically organize a party it’s friends, let someone to your kitchen to cook etc.

saraclara · 21/11/2022 00:44

I'd hate it. If they're remotely private or territorial about their kitchen, they will too.

But if they're super chilled then maybe...

Floralnomad · 21/11/2022 01:11

I’d hate it but you know your parents . I’d much rather have tickets to a show .

Improvising · 21/11/2022 01:13

I would loooove that

momager1 · 21/11/2022 01:21

nope. and i say that as a restaurant owner that does provide this service...NEVER do this unless you know that the recipient would be happy with someone in their kitchen!! personally...nope. nopity nope. my home is my sanctuary. buy me a gift card and i can order out

user1471453601 · 21/11/2022 01:25

I'd love this, but I'm no chef. I can cook, but don't particularly enjoy it.
My daughter,on the hand, a wonderful cook who cooks in order to relax after a days work, would hate it. Someone else in her kitchen??? Never.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 21/11/2022 01:31

No, sorry, we would not like that at all. Something related to their travel maybe? Digital frame for their travel photos?

VollywoodHampires · 21/11/2022 01:35

Can’t think of anything worse.

pimlicoanna · 21/11/2022 07:27

I know some people who would love this. I'd hate it though as would my parents.

This ☝️

I would hate this. Like REALLY hate it.

user143677433 · 21/11/2022 07:34

Personally I would hate it, but you know them best.

Eleusa · 21/11/2022 07:36

I’d hate this. I enjoy cooking and to have someone else in my kitchen would make me feel territorial and (perhaps irrationally) vaguely insulted.

Restaurant or theatre voucher- yes please.

SallyWD · 21/11/2022 07:45

I would love this and so would my DH! My pare ts would hate it - they don't like people in this house and would be very uncomfortable throughout. As long as you're sure your parents would enjoy it then it seems like a lovely idea.

RaininSummer · 21/11/2022 07:48

My mother doesn't even like family cooking in her kitchen so do sound them out first.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/11/2022 07:48

They are very difficult to wrap up and tend to rustle a lot under the tree.

Remember to ensure you leave an air-hole near the chef's mouth. There is nothing worse than unwrapping a suffocated chef on Christmas morning - believe me.

Something we won't forget in a hurry. Although we laugh about it now!

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 21/11/2022 07:56

As a motorhome owner do not go for hotel voucher, one of the things we love is to explore in our MH and love the fact of not using hotels

I also would not enjoy having a stranger in our kitchen - perhaps get a chef to cook and deliver

Would they enjoy something like a GO PRO camera system to record their travels?

If you fix it to the inside front windscreen so if they drive something like a particular scenic drive, the driver can then enjoy the view afterwards rather than concentrating on the windy road during the drive.

Although I haven't been there the NC500 seems to be popular with MH (not so much with some the locals sometimes if the MH don't behave responsibly, so not sure about the reception of MH there) but it does look a beautiful area of UK
