Kids smart watch (8) with tracking/listen in function

Has anyone come across a children's smart watch that has or is compatible with a tracking app that has 'listen in' function? I used the Find My Kids app on another DC phone when they were a young teen and it helped a lot to be able to quickly listen in that they are OK without having to disturb them. I feel DC (8) is a little too young still for a phone but likes to play at a nearby friends house and do short walks to call for other friends. I can contact the parents but don't like to be to pestering them!

Im looking for something like this too for tracking but I didn't know you could do the listening in thing. I wonder if they are allowed in schools? Not sure they'd be best pleased from a privacy point of view.

RealDeeBliss · 18/11/2022 10:39

Can understand the tracking but listening in seems really creepy?

Runningupthathill78 · 18/11/2022 11:17

Yes! We have a Ubequee watch for our daughter, and it's great!
It has GPS, listen in function, photo function and we can programme in some phone numbers so she can call me or her dad if necessary. I can also text her, and sound an alert on the watch.

Well thats a MASSIVE creepy invasion of privacy... maybe dont stalk your kids.

Them having a device to contact you/you contact them is smart but you 'listening in' and spying on the (especially a teen) is beyond crossing the line.

Namechangeforthis88 · 18/11/2022 14:27

Wow! You're going to put bugs on your children when they go into other people's homes, you'll be listening in on everyone in their vicinity as well. Collateral intrusion as it's known in the trade. If I knew a visiting child had a listening device on them it would be left at the door or they can go straight home.

Endofmyteatherr · 18/11/2022 14:28

I bet op won't be back for this one...

Namechangeforthis88 · 18/11/2022 14:29

Just in case is checking in though:
Can I sue someone for recording me without my permission?
An individual could be ordered to pay damages in a civil lawsuit against them or might even face jail time or a hefty fine. So, if someone recorded you without your consent, it is considered a gross infringement on your privacy, and you can initiate a lawsuit against them.

I'm not sure a primary age child would be allowed something like this in school... I wouldn't be happy if I knew another parent could potentially be eaves dropping on what happened in class, and I'm sure the teachers wouldn't either.

Can you please tell me more!? Which model is it as none of the kids watches advertise the Listen In function. Is it the additional thing you can add on as subscription?

that seems really intrusive op especially because he's only 8 years old, what on earth would you need to listen in for

STARCATCHER22 · 18/11/2022 19:13

What on earth do you need a listen in function for? Your child is 8.

I can’t imagine many parents would be happy to know another parent was listening in on a play date.

StrawberryRed · 19/11/2022 21:43

I'm really just interested in the watch rather than the judgement. Thanks for understanding.

I’m looking for something similar without the listen in function if anyone can recommend a watch with tracking that can make calls

taliaG · 19/11/2022 22:56

I'd love something like this. It would really ease my anxiety on big days out at busy places. I got AirTags with bracelets to use but it's not optimal, as it only shows that they are at a certain address. I'd like something with finer accuracy so that I could find them if they were lost at eg a theme park. The ability to talk to them through it would be good.

Lerk · 19/11/2022 23:04

OP this is messed up!

I think you need to have a long hard think about why you would be comfortable bugging your kids. It’s obsessively controlling, paranoid behaviour.

And could have serious ramifications for you both in a legal sense but also a future relationship with your child. It stinks of Black Mirror.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 21/11/2022 19:54

Just buy them a super cheap phone with just family phone numbers on it and contact them through that. DD had one from 8 for when she was at large sporting events or when we were on days out to somewhere busy that she might get separated from me like at a theme park or the beach.

RobinRobinMouse · 21/11/2022 19:58

These are banned in our school (obvious safeguarding issues) so would only be usable at home.

PeeJayDay · 21/11/2022 20:24

I've bought a fitness tracker watch today! Didn't know they did listen in functions but if it has one I won't be using it

Itstarts · 21/11/2022 20:30

If a parent has planted a listening device on a child, we would have to call the police at school.

TomTraubertsBlues · 21/11/2022 20:33

I agree with others that this is messed up.

jannier · 21/11/2022 20:40

Wouldn't want a child in my house with a parent spying device that's creepy. If you front trust who he's with don't send them around. ....where does an 8 year old go unaccompanied?

Are u serious!?

Absolutely. Listening in to children at school. It would go as far as court. It has happened before. Pre-smart watches admittedly, the device was on said child purely to listen in.

Bodhizatfa · 23/01/2024 19:32

I love the fact there are so many variations to the lawfulness and morally fair. My answer is we all have differing moral values and alas they are not usually aligned to others even close to us personally. On the principle of listening in, we can do this with various Google products. I can communicate to someone on the third floor when food is ready or they need to bring their washing Down. There is no issue there as the other user need to confirm that they want or reject others.
as for the phones, I agree that a silent tracker may work but if it stays with the child. But what if the phone gets lost, damaged etc.

Being able to listen in covertly would be a step to far and brings into the person taking that device in the first place.

Wanting or feel you need this in your life becomes a huge moral issue and sometimes disturbing at times. If yo tell a child you can track them and if needed help can come…good….telling them they can listen at any point…..bad. Telling them they can access you when they feel threatened …..good.

But when do you feel you are going to stop. As they grow up are you gonna put cameras in their car so you can see more? In there house when they leave home. Then down the road the level implication of storing all that data.

Now I have it the other way. We are looking to track me. Several serious conditions but that’s all you need to know. But I like to go out on my own. There is already a tracker on my car, it came supplied. But I have old phone that probably wouldn’t be much use but a signal carrier and booster. But my watch is an early Samsung smart. I’m hoping I can find a fairly robust tracker to add. If she looks at it she will see i am moving. Enough to stop her worrying. In most cases if I’m moving then I am most probably in a position to use the phone if I need to. Further my phone has an in case of emergency number on it.

would love to see what you make of this.
take car and you have a great week….x

I am loving all the doomsdayers and naysayers on this thread. All complaining about monitoring children's and fearful of being recorded by a rouge parent. Yet you are all cool with apple or Google or alexa tracking your every move, every search and partial recording of things you say. No you can't take someone to court over this and I doubt the Police would be very interested either.

OP, did you make a decision on this and would you recommend whatever you ended up buying?
