Present for the girl who wants nothing (or already has it)

DD 14 has always been tricky to buy for but as she gets older it gets even harder. She isn’t into many teenager things such as clothes or music. She loves reading but having got her a kindle (fabulous present) it now means that a pile of books isn’t an option. She has a 3D printer which has been a great success but has most types of filament so hard to do that. She has a raspberry pi but never really got into it. She isn’t bothered by shows or music. She has asked for a weighted blanket (which I will get) but has lots of other cushions and blankets for her room. Got a picture instant printer thing (good mums et idea from previous years)
Any ideas would be fantastic.

Gold (or silver depending on your budget) is a good one - my son loves precious metals, as he is another kid who just doesn't really want anything & there is something special about touching 'real' gold for the first time.

You can buy from around £120 (for a quarter sovereign) or £180 (for a 1/10th oz brittania) in gold, or £30 for a 1oz silver coin.

If she just dumps it in her dressing table drawer & leaves it there untouched for years, when she pulls it out again (whether that is in one year or twenty) it will have pretty much the same spending power if it's gold as it does now, so it will never turn into junk & you can always sell fractional gold easily.

Gosh, she sounds just like my 10 year old! She likes reading and gaming, and could not be less interested in other things (mines on the spectrum, don't know if yours is). I know yours is older but i find things we can do together quite nice, so craft projects, baking etc.

Chocolate making course (I think you can buy vouchers for these from VIrgin) or if she likes it a sushi course?

I'm a bit confused. She's asked for a weighted blanket, you got this. You've got her one surprise present. Why do you need to get her any more?

A lot of teens are very anti-materialism for sustainability reasons- maybe she would feel that you were ignoring her wishes by getting more when she has said she wants nothing?

Surely just having a lovely time with her on Xmas day is the nicest thing a Mum can do ?

Does she have a particular book or genre she loves?
I have visited places connected to books I love and really enjoyed it.
All in my head, I don't mean like Harry Potter World although I have been there.
I read Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen and floated around Bath as if I was a Regency miss 😂
She might like something like that, or to learn about a hobby a favourite character takes part in?
If she is tactile and creative I'd recommend a starter set for Crochet and some lessons.
If it takes off it will be a gift to you too, neverending present fodder there!

I need to think of present ideas for other people too. While some would say that isn’t the idea of presents at least then they are wanted presents.

Would she like something crafty like knitting or crocheting or drawing? What about a sewing machine?

By the way, if she joins her local library, which she can do online, she can get books for her kindle for free. I know you have kindle limited but you can't get every book on there. Having said that it only works if it's not paperwhite.

TaylorsSwimShorts · 14/11/2022 20:32

Does she like theme parks/rollercoasters? If so a merlin pass would be amazing, my kids have them and they're used throughout the year, there's currently a sale too 😀

My DD is similar, she has enjoyed virtual and non virtual escape room with her friends. Home crime solving kit was a huge hit and really fun like a mix between a podcast and escape room. She also loves theatre so that is an option can you do a short break somewhere for you both? We have enjoyed visiting places my DD has loved from books.

Light box
slack line
hammock
scratch off world map
chalk pens
sponge bag or make up bag
belt
purse
bean bag
photo album

I think if you Google "buy Kindle books for others UK" you may be able to buy her a stack of ebooks. You could print off the blurb and a cover photo and put them into a box?

Seconding the idea of beautifully bound books as well.

Do you have a Spotify/audible subscription?

A pair of Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker if she doesn't have one already? I like my UE Boom and my Sony WI-C310 headphones.

Does she like anything like posh hot chocolate or tea? I liked and still do like things like that.

I have a metal tea light type diffuser which I like that might work. A big, decent quality pinboard that she can make a collage of photos and momentos on? Might work with the photo printer.

heidipi · 14/11/2022 20:57

I'm thinking of a book stack shelf for my DD - something like this pic (tho a smaller stack). If she still has books despite the kindle it's a nice way of displaying them.

Otherwise - reading light or other nice room lights, oodie, new bag/backpack?

reluctantbrit · 14/11/2022 21:03

Would she be interested in audiobooks or podcasts? If so, decent bluetooth headphones may be an idea.

New phone cover
Junior Driving lessons
Watch (fitbit or similar or normal one)
Baking subscription

Even with a kindle, how about some paperbacks? DD reads both and always wants some. paperbacks as they are not allowed to bring a kindle into school but have to have a reading book with them at all times.

If she really doesn’t want or need anything, how about taking her to the supermarket to do a shop just for the food bank. And/or maybe toy bank, if there is one. Give her a limit and a bit of guidance about what’s best, but let her choose. She might just enjoy it.

Or she might decide that there’s something she wants, after all.
