DD 14 has always been tricky to buy for but as she gets older it gets even harder. She isn’t into many teenager things such as clothes or music. She loves reading but having got her a kindle (fabulous present) it now means that a pile of books isn’t an option. She has a 3D printer which has been a great success but has most types of filament so hard to do that. She has a raspberry pi but never really got into it. She isn’t bothered by shows or music. She has asked for a weighted blanket (which I will get) but has lots of other cushions and blankets for her room. Got a picture instant printer thing (good mums et idea from previous years)
Any ideas would be fantastic.

A sensory basket with lots of things to squish or fiddle with (just as you mention a weighted blanket).

A readly subscription for magazines?

Gazelda · 13/11/2022 21:30

Your DD is my DD's twin! Nightmare to buy for, although she hasn't got a kindle so books are always a popular gift. She has a monthly book club subscription that she gets very excited about.
She has an Alexa which was probably the best gift ever.
She loves art, so she's getting canvases, paint and an easel this year. Plus a cushion.
GPs are getting her pineapple jewellery.

I'll probably find some bee bits and bobs - t shirt, pjs, socks.
She'll have choc, fluffy socks, stationery and marshmallow in her stocking.

Other recent wins have been a popcorn maker with ingredients and recipe book. Cross body bag. Ear buds. Beanbag.

Season0fTheWitch · 13/11/2022 21:37

House plants/Grow your own kit? Could be a fun hobby for her to get into, especially if she prefers her own company and learning.
Similarly, clay craft kit, candle making etc?

MarthanotMarfa · 13/11/2022 21:42

Annual audible subscription and a monthly cinema unlimited subscription

Auntpodder · 13/11/2022 21:44

Your daughter sounds great OP. Since they don't really work on Kindle, perhaps a copy of a graphic novel - Persepolis might be good (esp with the current fightback by women in Iran?) www.amazon.com/Persepolis-Childhood-Pantheon-Graphic-Library/dp/037571457X

Bubble tea kit? You can get all the conponents from Asian stores (if you live near a city or town) including the very essential wide straws...

AndyWarholsPiehole · 13/11/2022 21:45

Junior driving lessons.

parietal · 13/11/2022 21:47

My DD is similar - 14yrs old. likes reading but nothing else.

how about

  • subscription to makezine.com/ which has lots of projects with electronics / 3D printing etc
  • nice posters / art for bedroom walls
  • cook book for cakes / fun things?
  • tickets to a play or event?
RJnomore1 · 13/11/2022 21:47

Record player?

Woolandwonder · 13/11/2022 21:48

If she likes reading maybe stuff for a cosy reading corner in her room-beanbag, mini bookcase, blanket, cute light, hot chocolate supplies etc.
Nice stationary stuff.. things to start bullet journalling with.
Experience like meerkat handling or llama walking.

mij66 · 13/11/2022 22:14

As simeone who like to read, even with the kindle could you get her some really lovely bound books? Meybe her favourite book in lovely covers?

Itsfridaynightok · 13/11/2022 22:35

Cricut maybe ??

GettingStuffed · 14/11/2022 01:45

A lovely fluffy dressing gown

LadyOfTheFliessssss · 14/11/2022 02:45

Festival tickets? Or gig tickets? Cool Airbnb?

HopRockers · 14/11/2022 03:01

My similar sounding DD has liked
animal experience at the zoo
lenses to put on her phone's camera
earrings

go ape
Some adult Lego (botanicals)

luckily she only likes reading from hard copies but she literally reads every book she's interested in as soon as the library gets it so the suggestion list is short!

The comic book idea above sounds great to me -
This series of Greek myths is extraordinary www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074CJMVCV?binding=paperback&qid=1668394508&sr=8-8&ref=dbs_dp_awt_sb_pc_tpbk
These are about a world in which girls get super powers when they get their periods -www.amazon.co.uk/Man-Eaters-1-Chelsea-Cain/dp/1534311432/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?crid=YZKKJ8F381TD&keywords=man+eaters&qid=1668394653&sprefix=man+eaters%2Caps%2C114&sr=8-2#byline_secondary_view_div_1668394664883

A diamond and some gold.

It can be kept until she wants something made out of it. Obviously other stones are available, maybe her birthstone. Maybe a promise to have something made for her 21st birthday.

Coins, the royal mint has just issued 50p with the King on, a brilliant uncirculated is £11.

If you want to spend more there are bars of gold and sovereigns, 1/2 sovereigns and 1/4 sovereigns. I got some years ago for my nephew and nieces, they are nice to loo at and if they are ever broke they can sell them.

'Polaroid' camera, I've got one and it is a hit with teens at family gatherings.

If she likes reading than do you think she would like to learn about the linguistics of the English language. David Crystal's books are beautiful and are better in book form than kindle, the Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language is the kind of book you dip in and out of, it talks about the evolution of the English language. Why we spell things certain ways and changes in vowel sounds.

I recently got this for a friend.

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/4805314680/ref=pe_27063361_487055811_TE_dp_1

He's actually learning Japanese but it is a beautiful book, it has stories in English on one page and Japanese on the facing page and note about the grammar and translating.

I'd say get it as a book, it is available on kindle but the book format, IMHO works better.

Sweetener12 · 14/11/2022 08:18

If she likes trying out and learning new things, you can get her a software that's suitable for creative amateurs, like a photo program for PC or a video editing app. If there are art classes she might be interested in, you can get her certificates or tickets to those. Maybe DIY kits like jewelry or collage set.

DrivingHomeForChristmaaargh · 14/11/2022 08:40

My DD enjoys Teen Breathe magazine www.teenbreathe.co.uk/

stealthninjamum · 14/11/2022 08:44

My dd is similar, she has sent me a link to one jumper she wants and asked for some warm pyjamas. I thought I might take her to the War of the Worlds immersive experience as she used to love the album.

is there anything like that that your dd might like? Or a themed afternoon tea

Charlieiscool · 14/11/2022 08:53

Pyjamas and nice slippers

woohoowoohoo · 14/11/2022 09:24

Does she like baking, baked in subscription has been big hit with my 14 year old

RedRobyn2021 · 14/11/2022 09:38

Does she like Harry Potter? Studio tickets?

Kindle giftcard or audible subscription would be good

Zebee · 14/11/2022 10:20

Thanks for lots of suggestions definitely some ideas that might work.

And thanks to those who have said their DD is similar, easy to think she isn’t like other teens. Especially nice to hear those that said she sounds lovely.

OP posts:
NCFT0922 · 14/11/2022 10:22

Mac?
new phone?
airpods
beats headphones
nice watch
earrings or a ring
city break for the 2 of you

FinallyHere · 14/11/2022 11:31

Start a bank account for her, for 'mad' money when she goes to Uni, or art school or whatever.

My mother put the money I was given for my christening into an account, gave it to me when I left home. She said it was for 'mad money' over and above my subsistence grant.

I really enjoyed the things I bought with it in my student days.

The money you would have spent on presents now will be much more valuable to her when she has left home.

Mistlefrog · 14/11/2022 11:48

If she likes blankets and cushions could you do some cosy socks, lovely pjs and would she be allowed a nice candle? Or a diffuser like a Neom

how about some special books, the classics are nice to own in a physical copy i think.
an audible subscription?

vouchers instead of money, for wherever she likes, Starbucks, the cinema
