My little boy will be 16 months old 2 days after Christmas so he won't understand but I want to keep it the same every year. Last year I did a letter from santa (will be mics to look back on as he grows) and mentioned some things I said he liked and then santa got him his stocking presents and a want, need, wear and a read and everything else was from us/whoever got him it. Does this seem like a good idea going forward? What do you do?

Stocking from Father Christmas with 6 or 7 small things in. Everything else is from who it is from. And only stockings are delivered by FC as well. Never done the presents appearing under the tree on Xmas Eve thing. They appear whenever they are wrapped and ready.

Fortunately DH and I had the same experiences as children so there was no difference in opinion we needed to worry about!

Inasec24 · 09/11/2022 16:32

Santa brings one gift that is left on the end of their bed, we get everything else including stocking

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 09/11/2022 16:36

Santa does stockings and 8-10 small/medium sized gifts. One main gift from us. Everything else is from who it's from.

simonthedog · 09/11/2022 16:39

Santa is just the deliverer here. We send the presents to Santa and he brings them to you on Christmas Eve if you have been good.

AuntieDickhead · 09/11/2022 16:42

FC brings stockings with 6- 7 small things in.
Everything else is from whoever buys it.

MeOlBamBoo · 09/11/2022 16:42

Same as @simonthedog
It saves a lot of upset for children ‘but why didn’t Father Christmas bring me X? He brought Simon in my class Y, does he not like me as much?’.

QforCucumber · 09/11/2022 16:44

Santa chooses something off your list so there's a surprise as you don't know which one he will choose, and brings the stocking and a family game (we've had Jenga, Monopoly Jr and Cluedo Jr, this year he's bringing Mousetrap)

The rest is from who it is from, including from parents.

Ponderingwindow · 09/11/2022 16:48

Santa brings whichever present is largest or awkward so having it wrapped under the tree in advance would be difficult. That way it can be wrapped or draped in some way and put next to the fireplace.

thaegumathteth · 09/11/2022 16:49

Mine are sadly beyond Santa age now 😭 but Santa brought stocking and one thing off their list. Rest was from us. The one thing off their list wasn't necessarily expensive just something they really wanted.

WhichWitchIsTheWitch · 09/11/2022 16:49

Brings stockings only. Everything else is from who it’s from. Avoids the unlimited money/X got more than me and means the actual givers get thanked/appreciated.

CherryLongIsland · 09/11/2022 16:49

Father Christmas brings everything except gifts from family and friends.
We don't give them anything.
This is what happened when DH and I were children, I didn't really realise others did things differently until it was a bit late to change.

Singleandproud · 09/11/2022 16:50

Santa brings the stocking and one present. Normally the present I made a huge fuss of not buying like Doggy Doo or Gooey Looeie so she was completely surprised when she received them as I absolutely would not buy them for her😂

Young children don't understand why he brought Sarah a full room full of toys and them just one thing and causes lots of upset.

Marmite27 · 09/11/2022 16:52

FC delivers everything, but only the stockings are from him. 12 little things, some that Mummy thinks are completely unsuitable and would never allow Wink

Cyclistmumgrandma · 09/11/2022 16:53

Father Christmas filled the stockings with small things. Enough to keep them occupied until,we were happy to get up. (Well that was the theory). Big presents from us and family.

Is this really a thing though or just a cliche? DC1 is 6 now so old enough to have had a few Christmasses where he was fully aware of everything. We give one, maybe 2 presents from us and a stocking of 6-7 small things. Probably way less than many of his peers if posters here are representative. He's never mentioned it. We've had Christmasses with my brother and his family where niece and nephew have got way more from their parents than our DC get from us and despite seeing it all together and opening together he's never noticed that either.

Namechangeagain5 · 09/11/2022 16:55

Santa brings stocking presents only but these can be quite nice presents not just tokens, so eg this year DD is getting some nice earrings, a Man City shirt, perfume all in her stocking. I don’t really see the point of buying stuff she doesn’t want.

Presents under the tree are from us- obv a bit less than it would be if we didn’t do such expensive stockings- and other family and friends.

We did this too but obviously didn’t think it through until ds started asking why we never gave him any Xmas presents.

He’s obviously brighter than me, my parents did the same and I never realised I never had anything that said ‘from mum and dad’.

Same as this. Got an outfit for Christmas Day from parents that we opened Xmas Eve. Hoping to continue this tradition with my own now

CoffeeChocolateWine · 09/11/2022 16:59

Stockings only from Father Christmas here with about 10ish gifts. This is what both DH and I had as kids too.

A few years ago we had Christmas at my parents house with my 3 siblings and their families too. Two of my siblings had kids of similar ages to mine and they had always done the same thing with their kids - stockings only from FC, everything else from whoever bought it. But for my other sibling, it was his baby's first Christmas and my SIL decided she wanted to do it differently and have stockings and everything under the tree that was from them was FC too. It was massively awkward that their baby cousin was getting these massive OTT gifts from FC when all the other were getting little things. Thankfully she's changed it now so we don't have that issue anymore but it was difficult.

TheChosenTwo · 09/11/2022 17:00

Stocking comes from Father Christmas, which contains some of the things from their lists and then everything else goes under the tree and is just from who it’s from.
Also, having worked in schools for years I can honestly say that I have never heard a “T got an Xbox from Santa and I only got a pencil, am I not a good person?” Type of conversation!
Just do Christmas your own way, everyone else’s child is not your responsibility. And I say that with kindness, honestly!

Iwantamarshmallowman · 09/11/2022 17:02

Santa does a stocking and want need wear read. The rest comes from us.
I have 2 dc so I try to match the santa gifts up so they both have relatively the same.

EllieQ · 09/11/2022 17:03

Santa brings the stocking and one present from the list. Everything else is from us, family, and friends. We’ve also mentioned that different families have different ‘agreements’ with Santa, like Santa might just deliver the presents, or just bring the stocking.

senua · 09/11/2022 17:07

FC brings the stocking. And it is a stocking, not a huge pillow case. It has some silly / small presents in amongst all the sweets and chocolate.
Family & friends presents are from family & friends, which includes the parents. I'm not having the DC ask why everyone buys a present except for their parents! And I want them to be grateful to us, not FC.

mam0918 · 09/11/2022 17:10

I guess we have a somewhat confusing set up but it works. We do:

All gifts under the tree from us (occasionally their might be a gift from a family member too) these start appearing when the tree goes up.

Santa 'delivers' gifts that we paid for that he stores in his big factory at the north pole (especially 'big' things), these are set up ready to play with not wrapped.

Santa gives a 'sack' full of presents which is 12 classic toys (santa doesnt do big expensive things its things like yoyo, football, hula hoop and always 1 noisy thing like a harmonica so they know its not from 'us' lol)

Stockings are just tradition in memory of St. Nick they arent 'from' anyone.

This... I went all through childhood without ever knowing anyone did xmas different to me, I didnt know until my mid 20s when I started reading mumsnet.

I had no idea some people had toys in stockings (we didn't) or that people wrapped presents (we didn't) or that some people got clothes or did want/need/wear/read (we didnt) or that some didnt do Xmas eve boxes (we did) etc...

In all my childhood it just never came up, I think we all ASSUME everyones the same as us without questioning it when little.

Same way I dont ever remember being asked what I got for my birthday by anyone.
