Christmas decorations up early

misssunshine4040 · 08/11/2022 16:40

I usually put my decorations up in the last week of December.
This year I'm so busy with work, we have had a bereavement in the family and my little is asking for them to go up now as the shops are full of Xmas stuff and all the street lights are on.

I absolutely love having the decorations up and don't mind one bit and would be nice to cheer him up but I think my neighbours would think I was crazy putting them up so early !

November is waayyy too early! 😖

First weekend of double figures in December is the way we have always done it and take them down just after NYD.
My uncle's family always did them Christmas Eve, a bit late even for me.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 08/11/2022 16:54

Your house up to you! Why does it matter what anyone else thinks?

Just to add........
I love Christmas and everything that goes with it but just don't the Decorations up for weeks on end. 😜

Prettypennies · 08/11/2022 17:18

How about instead of putting everything up just putting a few little bits up like fairy lights and festive candles?

PointyNails · 08/11/2022 17:20

Personally I think it’s far too early. For me it takes away the magic of Christmas when the tree is up for 7 weeks!
But whatever makes you happy.

Simonsaysitschristmas · 08/11/2022 17:28

Someone on our street already has theirs up.. no judgement from me. Got to do what bring you cheer, I think. We are a first weekend of December household.

CuriousCatfish · 08/11/2022 17:33

I think it's your house and you can put your xmas decorations up whenever you like.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 08/11/2022 17:34

I always put mine up on 1st December but this year my 8 year old is asking me to put it this weekend but I’m to busy with work too

VollywoodHampires · 08/11/2022 17:42

Bollocks to your neighbours, get em up.

Withnoshoes · 08/11/2022 17:46

I have see this on so many social media videos recently. I love Christmas and decorating the tree etc but it’s way early. I always find those that decorate ridiculously early are grumps by actual Christmas week and take everything down on Boxing Day to get ‘their house back’ . Early to mid December through to new year is perfect for me!

Floralnomad · 08/11/2022 17:48

We are putting ours up at the very beginning of December, I love my trees .

ellieboolou · 08/11/2022 17:49

It's ultimately up to you, personally far too early for me, makes me feel stressed when decorations are up so early, like I'm rushing to get this year over with.

Soscrewed · 08/11/2022 18:04

We usually do it the first weekend in December. This year I've said to the children we might put them up the weekend before but we will put the star on the tree and lights on the 1st. They come down on new year's day though usually for us.

UWhatNow · 08/11/2022 18:13

Far too early (and quite disrespectful before Remembrance Sunday imo) but if you really have to, I agree with @Prettypennies - just put a few fairy lights up at this point which will give you some of the feeling without overdoing it too prematurely.

This

My youngest is 18 now so all grown up but to this Day I put some ornaments out and perhaps a string of those battery run lights or two and then tree goes up 1st Weekend in December.
I do the ornaments around mid November
Its entirely up to you though, OP, and I wouldn't judge you, especially under the circumstances.

Whatsleftnow · 08/11/2022 18:18

It’s up to you and you’ll get no judgement from me. Whatever makes you happy is what you should do.

But personally I liked to wait until December and I used to tell my dc that only shops and pubs decorated in November and if we put up our lights that early people would think we were running a shop and come to buy the toys in our playroom. It was a bit of a running joke. If they pointed out a house that was decorated I’d pretend to be confused and want to go shopping in that house and they’d have to talk me out of it. At which point I’d decide it must be a cafe and I was going to ask for my dinner etc.

It was an easy way to hold off until December (and that was important to me because I’d get tired of it otherwise. Ideally I’d wait even later) and lots of silly fun (and also good practice for their teen years when mum really would be mortifyingly embarrassing)

it's in no way whatsoever disrespectful to rememberance sunday what a strange thing to say.

It's your life, who cares what anyone thinks. I decorated a room in October to cheer my elderly mother up on her birthday. Mine are all up now and I absolutely love it. Who cares about convention? Just do you!

Aww that's lovely

Reminds me of when my Uncle was dying
It was 1982 so pre Internet.
He wanted a last Christmas so we gave him just that at his In Laws House

A Christmas in September.
Somehow, things were obtained and decorations and tree put up etc. Its a lovely Memory but when they do it in Soaps it never fails to make me cry.

chatterbox52 · 08/11/2022 18:50

Each to their own, do what makes you happy. We do it the last weekend in November so the tree is up for the advent calendars being opened. We go overboard though with 8 trees (3 large 8ft ones, 5 small 3ft ones) and garlands in every room of the house. It's a lot of work so I want to enjoy it for a good while. Where I live a lot of people have theirs up from 1st November. We love driving round on the dark wet nights looking at the houses decorated near by.

AppleandSpice · 08/11/2022 18:50

Who cares what other people think?
It’s only too early if ‘you’ think it’s too early. Absolutely do it if would make your ds happy. They’re only little once and like you say you could both to with cheering up so why not?

JessesMum777888 · 08/11/2022 18:51

You don’t need clarity from your neighbours or people online.
do what makes you and yours happy ❤️
merry Christmas x

TheWurst · 08/11/2022 18:54

We put ours up first weekend of December but we get a real tree so it wouldn’t last if we did it earlier. I’ve been feeling really festive lastly though so if we had an artificial tree I think I’d do it now too.

TheNoodlesIncident · 08/11/2022 18:55

Well, if you do put them up early and you feel fed up with it relatively early on, you'll know for next year. So consider it on the basis of scientific research?

Either way it's not set in stone, you can put them up when it's convenient for you, and never mind what your neighbours think. When I was a kid our NDN put theirs up in November, my mum was quite dismissive but we kids were quite envious!
