What do you usually put in your kids stockings?

Growing up DS19 would have a fair amount in there iof small things like

  • 12ish packs of sweets, like Tubes of rolos, smarties, irn bru chew bars, poppets, fudge Bar, mars bar etc. Naturally these were breakfast ha ha
  • 5-8 little toys like YoYo, foam plane, metal car, fidget toys, noise machine, slap band, keyrings, Lego blind bag etc
  • toothpaste (he loves the Theramed one 😂) and new toothbrush would be a novelty one.
  • a pair of socks
  • a satsuma
  • lottery scratch card

Never anything expensive and/or big, like DVDs or computer games or books etc that I know his pals would get.

His stocking is a "normal" sized one, like a big long sock as pictured. (As I know some people have pillowcases/sacks, so just a bit of context as to one reason why big items wouldn't be in there)

What do you usually put in your kids stockings?

Off topic, but related question...

If you do stockings for your kids - do the adults/parents get one too? If so, do you fill your own stocking?

potatoes4all · 05/11/2022 12:28

A couple of books, pants, socks, toothbrush, bath/shower stuff, smellies, sweets, chocolate coins, pyjamas, slippers, a few crafty bits for the youngest, make up/hair products for the eldest two. My children love their stockings - 2 are adults now (at uni) and last year they made me one, I cried 😂

RobinRobinMouse · 05/11/2022 12:44

Oh that's lovely @potatoes4all , how thoughtful of them.

We do wrap the stocking gifts, but in our house dd only has stocking/sack thing then one main present (possibly two if slightly smaller) so otherwise she wouldn't have much unwrapping which I think is part of the fun.

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 05/11/2022 12:45

@MandaLynn yes husband and I do each others stockings

We have a under £2 rule for each item (will do £2.50 if needed) and whole stocking has to be under £20 we have 8-10 things each.

Always sweet treats everyone something different but anything else depends what we see and who likes what. I collect up stocking bits throughout the year as well.

mam0918 · 05/11/2022 11:03

The toy items change year by year but I always include:

  • stickers (always)
  • chocolate coins (obvious must have, its the basis of the tradition)
  • panda biscuits (cheap and bulk out nicely)
  • chocolare orange (one year tried a toffee apple, never doing that again as kids left it in the toe and it went off)
  • a game for them to play together

They then get a few sweets they like and about 5 small things each. Ours are standard stocking in memory of St. Nick, we do 'Santa sacks' seperately and sack contains 12 classic toys (skipping rope, yo-yo, ball, recorder etc...).

It does amaze me that some people spend so much on stockings (seen people say the spend £100, I spend under £10 lol) or that some wrap everything or that some sneak into bedrooms or some use pillow cases or that some put pants/toothbrush/socks/breakfast in... its also so different person to person.

Why does this amaze you?!
I use a large stocking about the size of a toddler pillow case and sneak into their room to leave.
I have also been known to spend quite a but on stocking, though this varies year to year and child to child.

I put lots of sweets and chocolates.
Pants
Socks
A book
A bath bomb
A teddy
And then any other small issues in size present that fit in the stocking but not necessarily low value. One year fitbits went in. Often small lego or polly pocket play sets. Small puzzles. Jewelery. Make up. Perfume.

3WildOnes · 05/11/2022 13:12

I've just added mine up and they all come to between £75 and £105. The toddler's is the most expensive.

IceCreamWithSprinkles · 05/11/2022 14:03

Mine just have any random bits and bobs that I think they would like that will fit (we have standard size stockings too), and then they get one main present from Santa from their list too.

This year, they have got:

  • Tamagotchi
  • Novelty pen
  • pokemon cards
  • treasure chest gem digging kit
  • Magic 8 ball
  • foam glider
  • chocolate coins

We don’t tend to do practical stuff in stockings.

NameChange30 · 05/11/2022 14:14

Following/placemarking- some great ideas here.
i love stockings! Both receiving and giving them.
i always wrap the stocking presents, mine were wrapped and I think it's more fun to unwrap them.

QuietYou · 05/11/2022 14:24

The only things that go in every year are some kind of food, socks and a book. Often I put tickets to something or vouchers in but not always.
Other than those I'm struggling this year, I'm trying not to buy novelty type stuff, I feel I've bought most of it before and it often doesn't get used much.
I really hate doing stockings! The first year it was fun but subsequently it's become a chore.

NoNamesLeft234678 · 05/11/2022 14:34

Last year my baby's stocking had:
A bubble bottle
A rattle
A brush and comb set
Dummies
O ball
A teether
Space/foil blankets
Toothpaste
Toothbrush set
He was almost 4 months old

This year he's got:
2 piece puzzles
Crayons
Light up ball
Matching puzzle
Toy clock
All 5 things I've got so far are Cocomelon and I'm not sure what else I'll be getting yet but I'll probably add a few baby snacks. He will be almost 16 months at Christmas.

because we are all different and its the verity of life.

Not sure how a word that means 'to feel wonder' offended you.

Yes and yes... I know its a bit 'sad' to make my own but no one else would.

I must have mentioned it to DH once and now every year as we unwrap gifts under the tree he will had me a smallish on and say 'oh and this is your stocking filler' with a pleased look on his face, except its not in the stocking, its one gift and I still have to make up the actual stocking... I just dont think he 'gets' it lol.

mamaduckbone · 05/11/2022 17:12
  • Sweets and chocolate
  • Always a book
When they were little - Lego mini figures / Playmobil figures, small toys (hot wheels cars etc), silly little things like a fake poo, whoopie cushions. One fateful year a harmonica (regretted at 5.30am on Christmas morning)
  • Pants and socks
  • Pens / stationery
Now they are teens...still sweets, socks, pens, toiletries, weird American sodas and crisps, trainer cleaning wipes, a small gift card... Oh, and a satsumaSmile

3WildOnes · 05/11/2022 21:28

@mam0918 I'm not sure why you think I am offended. I literally just asked you why it amazes you?
It was a genuine question. I'm surprised that someone would be amazed by that and curious by why that might be.

pinkksugarmouse · 05/11/2022 21:40

Chaiandchocolate · 04/11/2022 21:12

The ideas I have for DS(7) are as follows (not bought anything yet except books so it may vary):

Lego Minifigure bag
Small Lego set
Bath bombs
Books
A small toy like a Transformers figure
Small game like Top Trumps cards
Either a Lindt choc reindeer or large tube of Smarties

When people say they put in underwear, socks, toothbrushes/paste and soap - is this novelty stuff or everyday items?

I put socks in DD’s stocking when she was younger but definitely funny or cute ones. One year she had lounge socks that look like cat paws. Certainly not plain. I would never put in toothbrush or paste that would be weird imho but each to their own.

YuliaJollyberry · 06/11/2022 11:14

I’m having a serious rethink on the stuffing of Christmas stockings despite the cries of it’s tradition. Older now and it’s evolved into over the top-ness really.

I always thought the stockings were regular sized. Hand knitted chunky stretchy ones of slightly varying widths and lengths, co-ordinating rather than matching. I’m wondering if they might shrink if I stick them in the washing machine.

The stuffing follows a formula. I’ve just counted and including the orange, nuts, edible mice etc there are 22 categories mostly consumable, usable, doable. Then another 3 uncategorised gifts as I thought there was nothing frivolous in there. Everything is tailored to recipients likes and interests. 1 category is socks lol and toiletries are nicer than the every day basic variety the rest of the year. The tooth fairy always manages to sneak in something with a note sometimes a new travel brush other times a flavoured toothpaste. There is 1 item in that’s probably considered tat in that it’s only used over the Christmas period. I do gather them up and put away to be enjoyed in a future year.

YuliaJollyberry · 06/11/2022 11:19

MandaLynn · 05/11/2022 12:22

Adults get a stocking including any guests staying overnight.

I don’t do my own, it’s full of surprises and follows the same formula as everyone else’s. The only thing I wrap for myself is the tat item which is a group participation thing like mini musical instruments for playing or wind up toys for racing as soon as we all open them

PurBal · 06/11/2022 11:24

@Whatsleftnow your formula is genius.

Dreamwhisper · 06/11/2022 11:55

Yes!! I also have a stocking “formula” its so useful, creates that nice sense of familiarity and stops me going overboard too

vdbfamily · 06/11/2022 12:01

I include stuff that I might buy them anyway just for more to unwrap. Nice shampoo, shower gel,ear bud headphones, underwear, stationery, sweets, choc orange, satsuma, choc coins, scratch card.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 06/11/2022 12:14

Our stockings are fairly regular size, and not stretchy so dont fit much in.

Usually do a variety of (not all of)

Chocolate santa
Blind bag or lego poly bag
Pens
Bouncy balls
Glow sticks
Cosy socks
Action figures/collectable models

I will do 2 of the above non edibles. Always a chocolate Santa.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 06/11/2022 12:19

Fidget toy, lego minifigure, Lindt chocolate balls, transformer toys, Disney figures. Mini light sabre. Runic cube most popular stuff. Little things that can be instantly played with.

Scanner20 · 06/11/2022 13:04

Each year varies but always have the same amount in each one.

This year
Character socks
Mug
Colouring pencils
Figure/fidget toy
Hot wheels cars/little live pet
Bath bomb
Soap
Jelly beans
Harry Potter wand

Usually I find small gifts that will fit in the stocking from their gifts I buy.

I've got sweet selection boxes this year so they'll be wrapped up instead.

AliensAteMyHomework · 06/11/2022 13:17
