What is it? What do you do with it? 😁 I see it every year in the shops but have never tried it. Is it bread? Cake? Do you just eat it as it is or make a recipe with it? Someone please enlighten me 🎅🏼

Toast, drizzle with Ameretto, pour over single cream and eat. Yum!

Good grief 😋

Love it - either just eaten as a wedge straight from the loaf, or lightly toasted and buttered. The Aldi one last year was v good.

I don't like it either. We always have loads as we're in Italy and people/work are always giving it to you probablypassing it on as they don't like it either.

I toast it and pretend it's a hot cross bun. At least it's not as bad as Easter Colomba which we've only just got through! I do love the Panettone packaging though!

Colomba 🤢

There have been very few advantages to DS’s nut allergy but having a watertight reason to decline the endless columbe was a silver lining.

Love panettone. Jamie Oliver has a great recipe for using it up

Spanielsarepainless · 07/11/2022 19:36

...is over-rated. But does make good bread and butter pudding.

TheNoodlesIncident · 07/11/2022 19:38

Marks & Spencer sell a lovely Italian one which is amazing (if you like panettone, which we do)

fleurdelee · 07/11/2022 19:43

It just gets regifted and regifted forever no?

PinotPony · 07/11/2022 19:48

My Italian neighbour buys me one every year. Delicious!

PuntoEBasta · 07/11/2022 19:49

I don’t think I actually know any Italians who like it. OTOH they go mad for hot cross buns when I take them over.

Sussexlass84 · 07/11/2022 19:50

I'm with you OP! No idea! But I did see Jamie Oliver make a bread and butter pudding (with dark chocolate) with one once, and it was flipping delicious.

MissyB1 · 07/11/2022 19:50

I bought the small one from Aldi today, haven’t tried it yet. If it’s good I will buy the big one. They also do a chocolate chip one.

I would agree but my husband actually claims to like it! He doesn't like my baking at all as he finds my cakes too rich and moist. 😂

Havehope21 · 07/11/2022 19:52

It is delicious - a really light fruit cake... a bit like brioche but drier. I haven't tried a chocolate one, just the traditional fruit ones. Traditionally you have it with coffee and mascarpone but I love it dipped in a really rich hot chocolate / with chocolate sauce or chocolate spread. It also makes a really yummy bread and butter pudding.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/11/2022 19:54

If I could spend my whole life just eating panettone, I would.

ProperVexed · 07/11/2022 19:56

I love it and always eat it for Xmas breakfast. Costa coffee shops sell little ones all year round....makes me happy.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 07/11/2022 19:58

I absolutely love it, but some are definitely nicer than others.

To me it's a breakfast food and I don't put anything on it, I just cut an enormous chunk and inhale it with my mug of tea.

Auntieobem · 07/11/2022 19:59

I prefer a pandoro - can't stand orange peel!

SuperCamp · 07/11/2022 20:00

We have it for Christmas breakfast.

I like it cut in wedges and spread with unsalted butter.

Or dipped in coffee.

I generally think dressed-up chocolate etc. ones are a bit overrated though. Give me plain old classic any day.

christmaspudding43 · 07/11/2022 20:05

I love it. Tk maxx often have good ones and I like one of the ones costco do too. I don't like the supermarket ones.

Peachmelbas · 07/11/2022 20:22

It’s delicious, I love it for breakfast with a cup of coffee or dunked in hot chocolate. We open ours and leave it on the kitchen table with a big knife so you can just slice off a chunk each time you go past, not great if you’re trying to diet.

Agree! Don't often buy it but definitely traditional for me.

GettingStuffed · 07/11/2022 20:42

My husband serves it with marsala. Still not too keen on it

Fleur405 · 07/11/2022 20:45

Its not a cake as such. It’s a sweet enriched dough - so a bit like brioche - usually with candied fruit inside. We have it for breakfast on Christmas morning with a Buck’s Fizz.

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 07/11/2022 20:48

"Dry Italian cake. You see them around." 😅

God, I miss Peep Show.
