What is it? What do you do with it? 😁 I see it every year in the shops but have never tried it. Is it bread? Cake? Do you just eat it as it is or make a recipe with it? Someone please enlighten me 🎅🏼

I slice it and put it into the toaster. Eat it with butter or salted caramel sauce.

UniversalTruth · 31/10/2022 22:44

Traditionally it can served with mascarpone with icing sugar in. I love it, it's nice and light after a heavy meal.

MissVantaBlack · 31/10/2022 22:59

It's delicious! It's like a very light, airy fruit cake. The texture is similar to bread, but it's slightly sweeter and a bit softer too. Traditionally, it's studded with dried fruits, but you get lots of different kinds now, eg chocolate.

Try a small one from the supermarket, OP, and if you don't like it, you can make a very nice bread and butter pudding with the leftovers.

Arenanewbie · 31/10/2022 22:59

It’s basically a big rich teacake. You can eat it with tea/ coffee, use for bread and butter pudding or make a cake from it.
There is Pandora as well. It’s fluffier, lighter and without dried fruits. Also rich and sweet, we usually eat it with tea or coffee.

Thanks all! You’ve talked me into trying it 😁 I do like the idea of it toasted. Tesco do a chocolate orange one which looks good, maybe I’ll try a more traditional one first though.

I was gifted one a few years ago. I made eggy bread with it. It was delicious!

Mañanarama · 31/10/2022 23:59

Has anyone used it for bread and butter pudding? I’ve been told it’s amazing!

poshme · 01/11/2022 00:02

It's light and airy, with bits of fruit.

I don't like fruitcake. I love panettone.

Try a small one. Then buy a massive one and hide it so no one else eats it.

I now want panettone

Itisbetter · 01/11/2022 00:07

We just cut it into huge wedges and eat t with satsumas and chocolate while we play board games.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 01/11/2022 00:07

I worked with an Italian man who always brought Wilco panettone into work as he said it was the best you could buy. It was delicious.

This sounds excellent! Christmas Day breaky?

You just cut a slice and eat it. Delicious as a dessert or for breakfast with a coffee.

I have! It was absolutely delicious! I would absolutely recommend.

Thank you! I’m going to give it a go this Xmas. I make the chocolate orange b&b pudding so will get a choc chip panettone, I think!

troppibambini6 · 07/11/2022 18:53

@FormerlySpeckledyHen he's right! I'm from an Italian family and another Italian friend told me about this and it's very good.

troppibambini6 · 07/11/2022 18:54

We have it as part of Xmas morning breakfast I put it in the oven to reheat it's delicious.

CaveMum · 07/11/2022 18:57

The Aldi one is very good, though I have to say the one we got from Waitrose last year (covered in chocolate!) was amazing!

We just cut chunks off and eat it, but I’ve also used a Delia recipe to make a Christmas Trifle with it - www.deliaonline.com/recipes/occasions/christmas/christmas-desserts/panettone-and-zabaglione-trifle

CaveMum · 07/11/2022 19:02

I think this was the one we had from Waitrose www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/waitrose-christmas-chocolate-panettone/789579-373569-373570

Topseyt123 · 07/11/2022 19:07

I love panettone. It is an Italian style (I believe) light fruitcake. I just slice it and eat it with no adornments.

mathanxiety · 07/11/2022 19:18

It's a light, airy, yeasty fruitcake with a strong vanilla flavour. It has little bits of dried peel in it but not too much. It's lovely and chewy. I like it for breakfast between Christmas and New Years.

PuntoEBasta · 07/11/2022 19:22

Oh, I really dislike it. It is an enriched bread, not a cake, with dried fruit, from Milan. My family are from Verona and I much prefer our pandoro, which is plainer and simpler with no dusty bits of orange peel Grin

Mykittensmittens · 07/11/2022 19:24

I buy several and use them to make caramelised pannatone bread and butter pudding. Like a normal bread and butter pud but with an amazing layer of caramel at the bottom. It’s heaven.

you can also do similar with day old
croissants, pan au chocolate, or brioche. Choc chip brioche makes an excellent bread and butter pud.

slightly stale doughnuts are wonderful too. But o am not responsible if you keel over from a cardiac issue or are awake all night with indigestion.

Swissnotswiss · 07/11/2022 19:27

I don't like it either. We always have loads as we're in Italy and people/work are always giving it to you probablypassing it on as they don't like it either.

I toast it and pretend it's a hot cross bun. At least it's not as bad as Easter Colomba which we've only just got through! I do love the Panettone packaging though!

Els1e · 07/11/2022 19:27

Toast, drizzle with Ameretto, pour over single cream and eat. Yum!

It will be worth it I’m sure 😆
