How many gifts do you give each person on your list?

OP posts:
Neveranynamesleft · 28/10/2022 15:17

I dont have a list as I dont have many to buy for fortunately. Even if I did it's irrelevant as you just buy whatever you want for that particular person.

Christmas can come and go for me, I'm not tight by anybody's measure but it all gets totally out of hand.

Spookymcspookerson2022 · 28/10/2022 15:17

I just set aside different amounts of money for different people and spend until its gone.

Eg for my nephews its 50 each. If one picks something for 50 they get one present. If another picks something for 20, I get that but also buy other pieces so they also have 50 spent on them.

YorkieTheRabbit · 28/10/2022 15:23

I don’t have a list either, there are no young children so I don’t feel the need to make it look equal.
I tend to go on cost rather than quantity. Roughly £100 per person apart from DP.

Needmorelego · 28/10/2022 15:25

What are you counting as 1 gift? For example if you give a child a Barbie Doll plus 2 extra outfits are you counting that as 1 gift or 3 ?

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/10/2022 15:30

Depends, I have a rough budget and either buy one present or several depending upon what they want and what I have seen or think they will like.

So last year my sister really wanted something that was well under budget so I bought her some small but useful things to supplement it, but the year before she just got one thing.

I don't stick rigidly to budgets, if I see something that someone would love that is over or under but still within reason I go for it and it all evens out eventually.

ThreeRingCircus · 28/10/2022 17:24

I do a budget instead so for DDs I budget £100 each and do try and make the number of presents vaguely equal.

For my parents it's £30 each and that usually is two or three items but depends on what they want.

Aunts and uncles £10-15 per couple which usually just ends up being a box of chocolates and bottle of wine.

psuedocream3 · 28/10/2022 17:27

My kids range from 1-13 years, so we don't do number of presents as they get much smaller as they get older. We do roughly the same sized gift pile, and try to make the spends fair.

xyzzyx · 28/10/2022 17:31

My partner gets maybe 3 or 4, dc get about 15. My dad 2 his gf 1. My bro 1 my mum maybe 3 or 4 (we live so far apart) and my mil & fil usually get 1 each and a joint present.

Bobbins2022 · 28/10/2022 18:39

DC get about 10 plus stocking
DH about 5 plus stocking
DM 3 or 4 plus stocking
DPIL either 1 or 2 each or a joint present and 1 each
Siblings x 6 1 each
Aunt and uncle 1 each or something joint
My great aunt 1 or 2
Teenage nieces/nephews x 3 cash and chocolate
Younger nieces and nephews x 3 1 gift and chocolate
Friend's son a voucher and chocolate

It's a lot but DH has a big family and we see them all on boxing day so can't leave anyone out. Trying to cut siblings down to a fiver each though!

QuietYou · 28/10/2022 19:20

No set amount of presents, just a rough budget per person.
This year for example I've seen some really cute pyjamas for two of our nephews costing £15ish, my budget for niblings is somewhere between £40 and £60 so will get them something/s to go with the pyjamas. I'm taking one of our nieces to see a show for her gift costing £50odd so will just get her a chocolate reindeer or other small item to open on the day.

Inasec24 · 28/10/2022 21:27

Everyone gets one each, except DH who gets a few (this year 8 plus stocking) and DC (about 10-12 each plus stockings)

VampiresWife · 28/10/2022 22:54

There's only DD and DH on my list as we have no friends or family. I usually have a rough budget for each of them rather than a number of gifts. In the past it's been about £200 each but this year it will be half that.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 28/10/2022 23:31

I don’t do it based on quantity, mostly have a budget for each person and work with that. Some times I can get a few gifts out of it, sometimes only the one.

CakeCrumbs44 · 29/10/2022 17:44

Depends what they want. I generally have a budget in mind and will get one present for that value, but if I see something on offer or if costs less than the budget, I'll get them something else to make up the cost.

mam0918 · 29/10/2022 17:52

Just counting the wrapped gifts from me (not santa stuff, xmas eve, stockings etc...)

Kids = 10-12 gifts
DH = 3 gifts (kids will also get him gifts, Ill take them to buy them so 6 over all)
My parents & siblings = 3 gifts
IL = 1 gift
extended family = 1 gift

TheChosenTwo · 29/10/2022 18:03

Dc get roughly 10 things each under the tree from us and then about 20-30 things in their stockings.
Other than that, no set amount. Well; there’s no set amount for the dc either to be honest -
sometimes they get a few more, it just depends on what I’ve seen that I like for them.
stockings do tend to have a very similar amount as they all open them together but they’re not the kind of kids who would count and turn all Dudley Dursley if one of them had more.
I just buy things I think people will like. Sometimes that’s one thing, sometimes it’s several. It’s always the thought that counts though isn’t it?

SundayAtDevilDirt · 29/10/2022 18:20

DC get 2-3 each from us and around 10 smaller gifts from Father Christmas. Budget varies a lot depending what they want and how flush we're feeling at the time.

Everyone else we set an approx budget which tends to be similar each year so we might get people one more expensive gift or several cheaper ones depending what they ask for/what we think they'd like.

kitcat15 · 29/10/2022 18:26

Partner, 3 GDs and DD and DM all get an experience ... this year show tickets ( different shows) .....then presents x 1 for DS1 and DS2, SIL, DN ...and that's it...don't buy for older DNs x 10 and don't buy for 13 GDN and Ns ....don't buy for friends

guineafowl · 29/10/2022 19:24

1 present each. Plus stockings for the DC (6 small presents each) and a couple of presents to contribute to each adult's stocking that I am spending Christmas with. Oh and the DC give each other a small present which I buy so I guess I buy them 2 presents each in total, plus the stocking.

kavalkada · 30/10/2022 09:36

For kids two presents for each (one from us and one from santa). I also buy them two book each and a bit of fancy chocolate - so I can count 5 presents I guess. They get 5 to 7 presents from other people annd they usually have 10 to 12 gifts to open.

One or two for my husband

One or two for my mother and father

One to each on my brothers children

One or two to my goddaughter

One to my friend, one to my friend's daughter

One or two to my MIL and FIL

My children get a stocking on December the 6th and there is chocolate, a magazin, christmas socks, one little toy and christmas activity book

MovingOnUpp · 30/10/2022 09:51

I only buy for my three adult DC, my DH and my DM.
I but my adult DC their entire list (normally three things each that cost £50 per item) and a few surprise things in their stockings. I do similar for my DH and my DM has advanced Alzheimer’s so I choose something for her such as dressing gown and slippers.
My Christmas present shopping is very easy, I can literally do the whole lot on Amazon and pick up bits for the stockings in supermarkets.

Geneticsbunny · 30/10/2022 10:04

I just get one thing each for everyone. The kids get a stocking too. I try not to make too much fuss about the gifts because for us, Christmas is about spending time with the family. I do however realise that having typed that out I sound like a massive twat!

Mummyme87 · 30/10/2022 10:05

I don’t do quantity or a set amount spent. My kids are 3.5yrs apart, 4 and 8, they wouldn’t know which is most valuable price wise. I usually get them a main gift (Nintendo switch/hotwheels ultimate garage), then some medium bits (Lego city town centre, switch game/Lego city truck, board game) and a few smaller bits (hot wheels cars, monster trucks, pjs, clothes, play dough).

my OH about £250 ish.
My mam £60, her husband £40-50, my dad and his wife £80, in laws together £50, grandparents each £15. Secret Santa adult and child £20 each (although adults just £5 this year). my sister £60, sister partner £30. This is all approximate.

TheTeddyBears · 30/10/2022 10:18

It depends but usually a few. I've got my sister an expensive bag so she'll just be getting chocolates or a candle something small to go in with it.

Most folk I get one or two main things then maybe smaller things and chocs or sweets.

My nieces and nephews the older kids get £50 and sweets or small gift set. Younger kids get same value but it could be 1 big toy and a pair of pjs/chocs or cld be a couple of smaller toys plus maybe an outfit and pjs it all depends on the prices.

For my mum and dad usually always buy them 3-4 presents each but within the budget.

My kids 🙈 many many many presents. Eldest is getting Barbie dream house this year so there won't be 25 presents to go with it! Maybe another 10-15 but only a few will be say £15-£20 the rest might be £5-10 or below most likely £5 and below. Infact I got her a big Barbie set at £40 too.

I am trying to reign it in this year as they get so much from family too they really don't need it and it's just ridiculous. I'm going to have to sell a lot of stuff just to make room. We have a spare bedroom and a play room but the loft and cupboards are also full of toys 🙈

MovingOnUpp · 30/10/2022 10:51
